Heh, I get what you're saying. You state what the phrase is *supposed* mean around 2 min in-"It is your job to make yourself visible to the cars." But you're suggesting that the phrase may actually be encouraging timid riding behavior, which is a compelling argument honestly. Like you say, new riders are generally nervous riders, so when you tell them things like "all the cars are out here to get you" and "ride like you're invisible", it may influence them to do unsafe things that they *think* are making them safe... Maybe the phrase should be reworked a bit. "Ride like you want people to see you."? Like yes, 90% of drivers are distracted driving, but that shouldn't be the focus for a rider. The focus should be positioning and riding with your own visibility and safety in mind to protect from those TikToking Kens and Karens. Appreciate the video, something to think about for sure.

That’s how I ride I treat every car like they are trying too run me over I also see a lot of riders stopping directly behind cars and way too close I stay in view of the drivers mirror and at least a bike or three length behind the car I also see a lot of riders drag there feet for quite a distance before putting them on the pegs which isn’t smart either

Ride like you're invisible means that you should ride to make yourself visible. If people are interpreting it wrong then that's a separate issue. The "Ride like you're invisible" message is a damn good one.

I agree and disagree with your point, the best messages are ones that are short and clear so "Ride where you can be seen" and "if you can't see them they can't see you" are way better at conveying this particular message then "Ride like you're invisible"

I think "ride like you are invisible" is a terrific phrase. That is what I strive to do. I cover my front brake so that I can slow quickly in case a car pulls out in front of invisible me. I do not ride at the same speed as cars next to invisible me. Nor does invisible me pass cars on the freeway at very high speed, because I might not survive a car moving into my lane. I avoid middle lanes because thus I am only invisible to drivers on either my left or right, not both. I do not expect drivers to maneuver around invisible me. I get on with it when the light turns green; I don't want cars next to invisible me. Besides, it's fun to show off.

Absolutely, not many sport riders riding in a manner that is making themselves more visible, why? because speed, and or over speed, is the main thing making you invisible to others, and the other little bs wont change that.

I learn more about riding per video on this channel than any other.

I ride like I’m invisible, I am constantly planning on every car to cut me off and they don’t see me. I am constantly having a strategy for them trying to kill me. Now when they do see me and they are tailgating me, I zip the hell out of there until I am in front of a car that gives me space. But I do agree with the premise of what you are saying here. This isn’t bad advice in here, but I like having a plan for everyone all the time. If they can see me all the time there would be nothing to worry about

Cars can be directly on top of you and looking right at you And they still won't be able to see you! Most of time because people are driving in their completely distracted!! You see so much of it when you're riding two wheels then you would if you were say in a car People are really out here Not paying attention at all

Meh. Just started watching and I disagree with your premise. New riders are NOT going to ride for LESS visibility. The whole point of "riding like you are invisible" is to ride with conscious to BE more visible. I have never taken the phrase that way or ever heard anyone teach that way. Riders should always ride to be seen more easily. Riders should always ride defensively. Though most riders you see on youtube, ride like idiots like the road is their personal track.

Yeah, I agree. Try to be as visible as you can be, but don't assume that you have been seen. Assume that drivers have poor vision, so try to help them see you as much as you can, and try not to rely on their vision. That's all it means. I think the other popular saying, "Ride like everyone is trying to kill you," is dumb however because it's simply not true, and we ought to be grounded in reality. I think that's more what skyoom is talking about in this video.

Even before this video I never liked the term, "ride like you are invisible" nobody is invisible, a much better term would be "ride to make yourself visible, or make yourself visible." The point of this video is that there's a better way to think about it.

I always try to purposefully put myself in cars mirrors so they have the most chance to see me, also factoring in wearing very visible colors for gear/ bike color with having a KRT green ninja. Also side note I am a local commercial truck driver as a job and I witness a lot of peoples driving habits and have a “sixth sense” but I am always cautious and deliberate with every one of my moves

The way i usually tell people is "pretend like nobody sees you, because they aren't looking for you" i feel like it's less scary than "ride like youre invisible" but still setting the expectation. Sometimes people will look directly at you and still cut you off because they're looking for cars, not bikes

i like how you urge riders to take more responsibility for themselves, this lesson goes beyond motorcycles.

Remaining personally accountable for what happens to you is so important. There is very little you can't control or at least predict. Remaining proactive and vigilant is the best advice you can give. Small size allowing fluid lane positioning is one of the most distinct advantages to bikes and definitely one of its most powerful tools and I think you helped make that more clear here. And THANK YOU for the ol FU to the "cagers" mentality. I hate that mindset. Its always the dumbest dudes just desperately trying to feel special or fit in with the badass biker image. Drives me nuts. I ride where there is the best escape route. Riding next to the white line doesnt give you enough time or distance from the kid who changes lanes without checking his mirror.

You're correct, and that goes into never sitting in blind spots and always creating spaces between you and other cars but that can be done by manipulating your lane spacing. I filmed this an embarrassing amount of times before concluding its impossible to include everything in one vid for traffic thats not multiple hours long looking for unique scenarios. I'll keep trying to break down scenarios and will definitely get to escape routes and manipulating lane space to create the best cushion. Thinking I'll head over to the interstate for those 2

You will have enough time to swerve or brake so long as you’re not going much faster than the other lane. If I’m passing by a lane of stopped traffic I’m slowing my ass down, assuming someone is going to want to pull out to get in the empty lane. 5-10mph faster than the lane next to you gives you all the time in the world to evade people that pull out, but if you’re ripping up the highway at 120, you’re not going to have time for anyone changing lanes.

Love your content. Just want to point out that just staying close to the dotted lines is not always good because you can be invisible to oncoming cars looking to make a left turn in front of you. While I agree with your thoughts on lane position affecting visibility, I think the key point is that you should vary your lane position based on the situation.

Absolutely every intersection you'll want to weave left to look for anyone who may turn and make them aware of your existence. But for the sake of time had to leave that for another vid, I left so much out I want to cover in regard to traffic and visibility but I'm just going to have to piece it all together over time. It's impossible to speak it all with explanation in real time I've discovered haha

It is terrifying how invisible you truly are on the road but what makes it worse is these cars cannot see some other cars because of unoptimized mirrors. I think the driver aid features on newer cars is what has caused a severe decline in awareness. 360 degree cameras, lane assist, mirror detection, adaptive cruise control to name a few but the result is people who are in a car but not realizing anything going on near them anymore. That to me is truly invisible.

I think being aware of mirrors and how well people can see you is generally great advice. When I ride I always make sure I can see drivers in their mirrors if I'm around them. But I do think another really good consideration which appies more so to intersections but can still apply to being around cars in the flow of traffic is making sure your able to be seen and not blocked by somebody's window or door pillars on their car.

Thanks for this video. MSF never talks about whether other cars see you through their mirrors or not- you most likely just saved me a few close calls.

Ride like your invisible means be active and stay cautious

One thing I've always been taught bicycling is to own your lane because you're even *less* visible and come up faster to drivers behind you on a bike. Make yourself as BIG (read: noticeable presence) as possible.

Treat everyone else as if they are an idiot and never assume you have been seen. Is a better clearer way of saying the same thing

I modify the phrase as I’ve thought it could be misinterpreted. I say “I assume no-one can see me”, regardless of scenario or effort or anything. This puts the responsibility on me as a rider to be ready for anything. I practice never assuming I’ll be given the right of way I may deserve at any given time. I think the saying is for a state of mind. It’s not meant to be something you put into practice or technique, but it’s for awareness of risk.

In the UK, doing my CBT on Wednesday so it'll be my first time on the roads then, I'll probably be scared but hoping that I can push through it quickly and keep your videos in mind (Despite the fact I'll be on my little 125 for a good while). Love your content, the way you explain things just how they are without sugar coating is always great. Good to see you're gaining more of a following, any more beginner tips are appreciated even though a lot of your content focuses on big bikes and stuff!

“Ride like you’re in a group ride with everyone on the road” is a good message

Pretty sure "ride like you're invisible" just means ride defensively with the mindset that others most likely cannot see you. You're invisible to them, because not everyone can be 100% aware all the time. Never assume every car on the road has a good driver inside. Basically, just ride smart (i.e. make yourself visible, lane positioning, controlling speed, being aware/head on a swivel)

As opposed to assuming everyone can see you? By your logic that would be the BEST advice you can give a fresh rider. Assumption is the mother of all fuck ups, which is why you NEVER assume they can see you.

The more accurate saying is “ ride like you’re invisible to the car/drivers because you are in their life/mind” , The saying you are referring to is something I never heard a rider misconstrue. Nobody tells a rider to ride like you’re invisible and then tell them to ride in the wrong spots..etc , and if you have received that advice you may want to consider new friends. Any experience rider would just say ride like your invisible and not explain

Wanted to also add in that semi trucks obviously have larger blind spots, and to NEVER ride beside a semi, let alone in their blind spot. I always give em plenty of room, or at least pass them when it’s clear to pass.

I always say this saying... I refer it to cars pulling out of junctions on you etc ride as if you're invisible so that you're prepared for that to happen... I've been riding since i was 16 and I'm 33 and not one accident on the road, definitely helped me. Also having a racefit exhaust helps 😅

This is fantastic advice. Motorcycles inherently take a little bit longer to turn in than cars. As a result the sooner you see an obstacle in the road the better the chances you have of reacting. It doesn't matter if it's a car pulling out into your lane or an object on the road. The farther out you can see it, the more time you have to react. Tailgating on a motorcycle will get you hurt!

I always perceived this advice as assuming that others will not be paying attention and therefore you should always be alert, position yourself in the lane to give multiple routes to evade accidents and be ready to take action to assure your safety.

Just my two cents worth I have a C DL and everything I've learned I have transferred it to riding my bike. I ride a carbon fiber bicycle too and am all in wearing bright colors to be visible. That said I still wear a black jacket and have a black knight Ninja. But I have a blue helmet. What keeps me alive in traffic never tail gate , constantly looking for a way out. Giving yourself at least a 12 second look down the road. And checking your mirror every 8 seconds. Theirs much more but I have drove 100,000 miles in a year with 0 accidents and 0 tickets in nasty traffic as a CDL driver. Which has helped me survive on a motorcycle.

i know its for click bait , but till this day it is the best advice. You can NEVER count on or assume neighboring vehicles are aware of your presence. All it takes is a good sub woofer and decent speakers for people to be unable to hear you with a loud exhaust on your bike.

I may be one off, but I prefer riding on the left side of the lane. Gives me more buffer space to react in case a car still doesn't see me and decides to blindly merge onto my lane. I may see them but it may not be the same from their view.

As usual, it's a great topic. I would maybe add the description of lane positions being labeled 1st=left, 2nd=center, and 3rd=right. This may be an easier concept for some viewers. After reading some of the comments, I believe some viewers really took a lot of this out of context. The only thing i dont really agree with is your location for the first few minutes of this video. Most drivers tend to swerve towards where they are looking..... and if you're in an odd location, that they dont normally see someone parked, they may inadvertently swerve in that direction being an "on looker or rubber necker"..... Keep up the great work with the awesome content.

Riding like you are invisible SAVED MY LIFE! A FEW TIMES . Someone once stopped at a STOP sign while i was coming in a twistie mountain road i thought he saw me . Guess what he did next he waited until i was in his range and launced his car vertically on me . The only reason i was saved is because i was literally expecting that and the only thing that happened was i hit side ways his door with my body as i slid my rear to avoid head on collision.

A lot of comments relate to him misinterpreting the saying but I think he might mean( as others have also commented) that it does possibly set up another level of anxiety for new riders. They might become so obsessed with thinking can that car see me that they actually end up having less focus on what they're doing. Not everyone can see you all the time and you are not always at risk from people that can't see you. Some of the most common accidents occur at intersections when people run red lights. These people probably do see you but think they have time to get through and they don't. I ride a bike through an intersection the same way I drive a car..cautiously with the assumption that the person could very well pull out in front of me. I am already slowing down covering the brakes until I know there is no indication of them moving. Some people ride as though the other driver will do the right thing and are not in a position to even take defensive action because they are riding too fast.

Hands-down, the thing that helped me avoid close calls with drivers was understanding the difference between a road and a street. Once I did, all those close calls with other drivers just went away. Of all the things I've learned about driving or riding safely, this helped the most. In the US, there is something called a "stroad" that I've rarely seen in other nations, but when you combine a street with a road you get a stroad. A street is a place where people do business (ie a destination), and a road is what we use to get between destinations at high speeds. When you put a lot of people and business on a high-speed road you then get a stroad. Why is this important? Because about 80% of traffic fatalities occur on stroads. Stroads are purposefully and beautifully designed to crash vehicles at the highest possible speed at intersections while using the most number distractions via signage to purchase stuff. Stroads don't make just motorcyclists invisible; they also make cars invisible to drivers. The high speed of stroads, combined with the wide lanes that encourage 10 mph over, the long lights, the very long distance between lights, the multiple driveways, and the enormous signs encouraging you to look anywhere but the road, makes even drivers invisible to each other. You can ride on a stroad but understand you're swimming with the sharks now. Stroads are where US citizens congregate to crash.

Na. You misunderstood the phrase. No part of it implies you should be invisible. That phrase just means they should assume four wheelers are driven by incompetents. They mostly are. It’s definitely good advice.

This year on the first ride out one car driving out of a forest road onto the country road completely overlooked me and I had to make an emergency stop and move to the furthest right of the lane in order to avoid him by a few inches. Only then I honked at him. I feel like if I had honked earlier I couldn't have focused on braking and moving to the right perfectly, and also he might have got scared and hit his brakes and completely blocked my side of the road. He then also came to a complete stop and apologised. I guess he looked further down the road to see if someone was coming.

I now ride next to the white line and look to see if I can see drivers faces in the mirrors. I know drivers are seeing my lights and at least registering in the brain as some vehicle is there. I am in Texas and it makes a difference. Good stuff.

I'm the worst for a mods opinion since I'm offensively cheap hahaha. But wind has never bothered me too much, ear plugs and a quieter more aero helmet I think fix most wind fatigue issues better than anything.

I disagree with the premise because I think you misunderstand what that phrase is really meaning. Other than that every one of your vids is gold man, you will certainly blow up you have the best tips and advice especially in terms of teaching people tips on riding super sports. I don’t own a ss but I own a carbureted sv650s and I watch your vids constantly because I’m always learning more stuff for when I actually decide to buy a ss. Keep it up 👍 also as a gsxr1000 rider have u ever ridden the 750? And what do you think about it? I’m a very small guy so the liter bikes are unrealistic for me but the 750 is just fucking perfect in terms of ergos what’s your opinion on the bike vs the 1000

750's are awesome, I think its the lightest feeling super between the legs of any 600+ which is one of the most important factors when bike shopping to me. Also you basically can't find a single bad review from an actual owner, I think that says more than anything about them haha

How much heavier is the 1000 in your opinion in terms of feel? For myself I don’t see a point in getting a 1000 bc I’m small and I don’t even want that level of balls to the walls. @@300zxss thanks man means a lot! And its pretty damn substantial weight wise haha. One thing with the supers is weight on paper means nothing to how they feel between the legs because they vary more than any class with where the weight sits. Its why the 600's on paper are pretty comparable to the 1000's weight wise but feel 100lbs lighter between the legs. Panigale v4 and v2 are both technically lighter than the 750, but if you didn't know that number before hand there's a 0% chance youd ever guess the order of weight correctly. The gixxer 1000 and aprilia rsv4 are on paper 2 of the heaviest but imo feel the lightest of any of the 1000+'s because they have their weight lower set. Rsv4 almost everyone's reaction for the first time is confusion because on paper you'd never expect it to feel the way it does. With that in mind the 750 makes the gixxer 1000 and rsv4 feel like pigs hahaha

I think the phrase means to assume that other cars don’t see you.

Most people have incorrectly set up their side mirrors to look behind them, so being closer to them/riding next to the white line will make you more visible for most drivers. Try to avoid riding side by side with any vehicle because there is a good change their mirrors aren't set wide enough to see you, and many people don't look over their shoulders or use their turn signal before moving over.

Also, if there is a big gap between you and the vehicle in front of you, people will probably take that spot....usually without signaling.

@@mikasihite5346 Dude has been riding longer than me. But he rides a HD Ultra Glide Classic and is not a man in a hurry. So, I doubt his rear tire will slide out from under him while out for a relaxing cruise. Riders who want to go fast should pay attention to instructors with proven ability. But I am not an instructor with proven ability.

Also do not react to any aggression or horn honking. Just stay focused, if any car driver is yelling beside you, dont react just keep looking straight ahead. I wouldnt stay beside cars at anytime, mybe just a few seconds. In the UK the police use a system of position 1, 2 and 3, your constantly changing position to gain an early advantage view of the road for safety depending on the situation. The doted line in the US is oncoming traffic in the UK where we sometimes position ourselfs. At 9:50 the truck behind you expected you to continue on and not brake. But then if your on the otherside of the lane would'nt that give you more time to avoid cars indicating moving over into your lane?

Perhaps the way I understood it was different - it's not "ride like you're invisible" - it's "ride in a way that you assume everyone else can't see you, so do things to make yourself visible." I know others have come here to say this, but it seems like you took it completely different than I did. I am still a novice rider, 1.5 years in, about 3k miles, so still very new - The message your giving is the same everyone else gave me BY SAYING ride like you're invisible..

Those you'll want to be doing everything you can to see ahead of you more than anything while keeping a healthy gap between you and the person ahead while also trying to create space behind you so vary speed a hair to keep the cushion both ways. But farther you can see the safer you'll be, whether it be dodging the dead animal, looking for someone who may turn/driveways/gravel patches or potential animals any other something that may pop up and force you to react to it. So the whole lane basically 🙂

Ride like you are invisible keeps you aware that people can't see you. That don't mean to ride scared. Assume that they don't see you at the same time make yourself visible as much as you can. I will disagree on this one

I think you missunderstood what "ride like you are invisible" means, it just means that you have to ride defensively because as you point out, people do not see you and that`s why you need to use your positioning like you explain. Funny thing is that this is the number one focus when we are taking the motorcycle license in Norway. Ride too be seen and position yourself accordingly that people can see and notice you. Like staying away from the massive blindspots of trucks and cars. Smashing mirrors does nothing but creating more hate against bikes and i cringe so hard when a 20 year old on a sportbike does that because "hE dId nOt seE me". It just seems like the US training is really really poor unfortunately. Love your video`s, they are great training for anyone riding a motorcycle and i have not come across many other channels that explains it this good.

I hadn't really appreciated the diversity in my audience until this video hahaha. But if you can believe it our schools/classes focus exactly 0 on traffic navigation and visibility. Not figuratively 0, literally 0. Really appreciate the feedback as I believe I've learned more about my audience from this video than any other. I'll be more careful with words and thoughts going forward to hopefully better address traffic navigation

I just say, ride as if you expect everyone to do the dumbest thing possible at all times, because they will.

good advice

Great video but I wish you touched on how to see and be seen at intersections and how following distance and speed limit is important for visibility as well as stopping before you hit the car.

Intersections will be a whole video on traffic got her on the list, statistically most dangerous area but I'll need a busier traffic day to really do that one justice

The term doesn't mean you should be invisible.....means others are not out here always looking for you. Any smart person should be able to decipher that message.

What if you are in the middle lane of 3 lanes? Do you ride in the middle of the lane, or do you just try to stay out of the middle lanes And get to the far left of right?

The middle lane is no mans land, I avoid it unless absolutely necessary

Hehe I got my own take on that: I ride around with a bright yellow helmet and High Viz fluo yellow vest. Yea, bit of a clown. But I noticed a MASSIVE difference. cagers notice me way way quicker (and still most times don´t give way and cut in front of me or try to kill me, but at least they saw me and adjust accordingly). Better alive than looking ´cool´ and dead. I´m not a poser or a rider who´s in for the ´fashion´ and ´coolness´ of riding a bike. The wind in my face, sunshine up ahead and freedom flowing trough my vains... no wonder cagers hate us. It´s pure drugs (legal😂).

Does your state allow filtering or lane splitting? I have your mentality for the most part. 2 years riding and loving every minute. I love being in traffic because I'm not stuck in it

The only state that allows lane splitting and filtering is California, some states do allow lane filtering. But I can tell you this much, NYC where I'm from it's illegal to lane split or filter. But I and many other riders do it, as long as your on the lookout for cops. It should be legal in all 50 states, but sadly that's not the case. I should move back to Cali!!! lol

@prdragon47 wow I didnt realize California was the only state. For once we have it right lol. Dam does it feel good to split lanes. It feels better than filtering. Faster mentality

People adjust their side mirrors so poorly. You should have a very small sliver of your car side panel in view and always do a head check anyways.

So much misunderstanding going on, I don’t even want to break it all down… But the REAL advice is to ride as if you will not be seen by drivers, ie. expect to be unseen and be prepared to make evasive maneuvers at all times. Next issue.
