Ride Behind a FIRE Emitting YDM4 : Meter Guage Journey | June 2022
In June 2022, me and my friend Akshay Inamdar went out to explore the beautiful Choral valley along the Choral River.
Choral river rises in the Vindhyachal Range of Indore District and after flowing in northeast direction through the mountains, it turns south after exiting the Vindhyas near Patalpani waterfall and joins with Narmada River in Barwaha city . The Choral river has a length of 55 km.
For this, we took the now heritage, meter guage line from Dr. Ambedkar Nagar (MHOW) to Omkareshwar Road. Long time back this line used to connect the city of Nizams HYDERABAD to the heart of Rajasthan AJMER. but now only this section of the meter guage is remaining.
In this video, you will see the extended journey from Choral station to Omkareshwar Road and here I will show you the glimpses of the journey behind the Fire emitting YDM4 Locomotive.

About the YDM4 Locomotive :
The class YDM-4 is Indian Railways' workhorse diesel locomotive. The first units were imported fully built from the American Locomotive Company (Alco) in 1961. Since 1968, it has been manufactured in India by the Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW), Varanasi. The model name stands for metre gauge (Y), diesel (D), mixed traffic (M) engine. The YDM-4 has been the most successful diesel locomotive in the metre gauge operation of Indian Railways. The YDM-4A is a variant of the YDM-4 supplied by MLW . Originally equipped with vacuum brakes. Some were later equipped with dual brakes, particularly those working in the Northeast Frontier Railway were retrofitted with dual brake system by Lumding shed. The YDM-4 locos have a maximum speed of 100 km/h (62 mph), restricted to 85 km/h (53 mph).

Beautiful! I almost forgot the characteristic sound of the YDMs.. My uncle's home used to be near a MG line route. This video brought back fond memories of hearing these YDMs whenever I visit him. The line got converted to BG later on and now electrified.

I know I shouldn't dampen the excitement for experiencing a YDM 4, but a level of fire belching is not a good sign of engine health. The engine needs urgent servicing so that it stops dumping fuel through the exhaust port and across the turbocharger. That flame spewing upwards also travels down into the turbocharger, which would damage the blades with the excessive heat, and would end up causing permanent damage to the turbocharger. The Locoshed should do some re-tuning and overhauling of the engines to prevent such flame-outs.

one thing i noticed during my journey last year in the month nov that the mhow omkareshwar section mg track is very well maintained unlike other remaining mg in india. one can see the clear difference between mhow omkareshwar section track is so neat and clean proper maintenance and the other one like bahraich mailani track no that good no proper maintenance. mhow omkareshwar pr jab ghat section nahi rahta h to train bahut hi tej speed se chalti h purane dino ki yaad aa jati h jab meter gauge trains 60 to 80 kmph chala krti thi. 75 kmph mene mobile se check kiya tha. kya bhaag rahi thi yar train.
Smoking ,flaming ALCO,Single line Metre guage diesel section,token exchange...aur kya chahiye....!!!Patilsaaheb...fantastic video... Very soon planning to make this journey..

Recently went to Omkareshwar. But didn't have chance to go in MG due to single service only. Went via Bus. Saw the rail route perfect maintenance of the rail. But station is delapidated. Loss making section of IR. Hope to increase no of train so pilgrims can use otherwise a loss

Yes MG still running in India, Dr.Ambedkar Nagar - Omkareswar Road in Madhya Pradesh , Marwar-Mavli in Rajasthan, Veraval MG through GIR forests in Gujarat, Bahraich-Mailani in Uttarpradesh.
