Cameras can be like vehicles. A farmer loves his pickup. A family man loves his van. A teenager loves his hotrod. A millionaire loves his limosine. So which one of them is wrong? I love the feel of certain cameras in my hands. Other ones I do not like as much. Maybe it is the size of my hands or the shape of the camera or some other completely psychological phenomenon. The bottom line is that we like what we like and we usually have reasons. I don't want a zillion dollar Leica because I would feel like it was an ostentatious waste. But that is not true for someone who can easily afford them. I think the best way to find out what is best for yourself with cars, cameras, clothes and other things like that is to try it out. And (in general) there are no wrong answers.That is because we are looking for answers to questions like "what do you like best?" or "which do you prefer for what you like to do?". Viewpoint questions do not have wrong answers because they are answered with opinions.

Matti; I agree, when the camera is simple to use, doesn't require a lot of other gear, fits in your pocket then the joy of taking photos is enhanced! I have an older Richo camera and it simply works and has had a long life with little wear over the years. Possibly it is time for a newer one. Thanks

Best and most honest "camera review" ever! The best camera for us is the one we like to own and use. Forget about the specs, these days all cameras are good enough anyway. The word amateur means someone who does what he/she does out of love of doing it. I don't know exactly when and why we photo amateurs started to forget about our love of the hobby getting caught up in comparing specs of gear. Thank you for reminding all of us about the subjective factor.

An excellent presentation! I've owned a Ricoh GR 35mm camera and a Ricoh GR digital camera and now have, among other cameras, a Lumix GX8 camera with the 20mm f/1.7 lens as well as an Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max. For me, the iPhone is easily the most convenient choice, overall, because it's usually in my pocket. On the other hand, the electronic viewfinder (EVF) of the GX8 makes that camera the right choice on sunny days when the sun washes out the iPhone's display as it always did on my Ricohs. (I did have the optional viewfinder for the Ricoh, but that was of little help.) An unique advantage of the iPhone is that I can edit and transmit the image quickly. Choices and compromises.

I have also an iPhone, but I simply use the WiFi function of my GX9. Works for me, even when it takes longer. But this approach includes some sort of review process.

I always enjoy your videos. Personally I use a pen camera with a variable focal length pancake lens that allows me to frame the subject to maximize the megapixels it has. It also includes a built in flash. For casual street photography it can be a low cost and compact option.

This is a great video and very validating. I've been thinking seriously about the Ricoh GR since owning both the GF1/20mm (loved) and the Fujifilm X100 series (too big). Then there is the iPhone as a pocket camera...

As usual, a very enjoyable video, and I know what you mean. Although I now use Olympus mft cameras, nothing feels as good to hold and use than my elderly Olympus OM1 film cameras. For me, these cameras just feel 'right' to hold and to use. Only problem is, is that I don't use them enough! Keep up your great videos!

I, too, hate changing lenses in the field, and I have always found that I develop a different relationship with a fixed focal length camera once I get accustomed to its field of view and its controls. I think I use such a camera more spontaneously. But I also like a big “system” camera for different reasons. I don’t like the small cameras with fixed zooms, which don’t do anything really well. My LUMIX LX100 ended up gathering dust because it did nothing really well: its focus was “okay,” I found myself fiddling with the zoom too much, and it is just not “elegant.” In other words, I couldn’t did’t develop a relationship with it. By contrast, I liked the Fujifilm X100T so much that I upgraded it to an X100V, and found that its image quality was so much better than my G9 at the equivalent focal length that I found myself using it to the exclusion of my G9. As a system camera, my G9 did almost everything just right, and I especially liked the way it felt, but its M43 sensor become a dead end for me. I replaced it with a full frame and was initially a disappointed until I developed a similar relationship. That’s the funny thing about cameras: they are more than just things, we actually develop relationships with them. Just like with people, some relationships are better than others.

Hi. I think the lens and the image processing defines the image quality more than the megapixel resolution. My last decent compact fixed lens camera was my Contax T3. I still have the camera although I don’t shoot film anymore. Like you said, with a fixed lens camera you don’t need to think about then just concentrate on the composition of the shot. It’s kind of liberating. I found it can spark inspiration as you work out how to get a great shot with the camera. For a fixed lens digital camera I’d prefer it to have a flip up screen and a viewfinder (at the very least). I don’t tend to change lenses when I’m out shooting or filming anymore. No matter how careful I am sooner or later I end up with dust particles on the sensor. Before setting out I have a think about what I’m likely to photograph and take the appropriate lens. Sometimes I take an additional body with a different lens for added flexibility.

Reluctance to lens change makes sense to me for inclement weather. Snow, rain, blasting wind, hail... Something that can cause your camera problems. But on a calm, good weather day, changing a lens is a pleasure to me. Now Finland, where my Grandmother was from, is practically a synonym for "inclement weather" so I can understand your reluctance. Where I live, in Washington State of the USA, is among the most mild weather on earth (and the rain for Seattle is wildly exaggerated. Seattle experiences an average of 152 rainy days a year which sounds like a lot but it is 152/365.24=41.6% so 3/5 of the time it is not raining in Seattle). And on the other side of the Cascade mountains, it hardly rains at all.

Thanks for your thoughts. My reluctance to change lenses has nothing to do with the weather, it's all about down time and having the wrong lens on. It takes relatively long time to change the lens and by the time I'm ready the scene might be gone already. I really prefer just one prime or if I need several focal lengths I use a zoom.

I agree with you. Most time I take the most pictures with my Nikon Z6II Equipment. Okay. But for my heart I take pictures with the GRIII. Many years ago I only used a Rollei 35 SE for a complete vacation with my family. No Autofocus. No coupled Lens. And with this camera I take the best pictures of my little daughter playing on the beach.Less is often more.

Thanks for another insightful video. Recently I purchased a GX9--low cost international version--as small everyday camera & complement to G9 & G95. Also last year, I wanted to add a MFT camera with high res mode. Initially I purchased an Olympus em1 mk iii, but returned it as it just didn't feel right. Next I bought a G9 & couldn't have been happier; it fit my hand perfectly plus the build quality & craftsmanship reminded me of an old school handmade camera. Now after watching your video, I realize I've become a fanboy for Panasonic 🙂 due to reasons you cited : I just like Lumix cameras. Also I hope you can get your hands on GH5 II & GH6 as I know your review would be outstanding

Your points are well taken. The best camera is the one you want and enjoy shooting with the most. After you satisfy those conditions, you can always find reasons to justify your choice. Bottom line is all cameras can take great images. They can also all take mediocre images.

I usually take The GR with me in my pocket and then another larger camera for video. GR is like a chilli in your mouth it’s both strong and sharp and you can’t think about anything else when you use it. Lumix is great for family vacation photo and video.

I mostly use a set of small primes and carry them in a small photo bag. I have spent some time to learn and train how to switch lenses. Now I can switch them almost subconsciously even during walk. It is like changing car gears.

Thanks Matty, entertaining talk, I own a GM1 and a OM-D mk5, but was lucky enough to get a GRiii with retirement money. They are as you say all good in their own ways. I had the GM1 converted to infrared as I no longer used it once I had the GRiii. The GRiii offers distinct advantages, especially when shooting in areas you don’t know and may need to make the camera disappear! Even compared to a M43 set up the GRiii is incredibly small and light. My m43 set up is great when I need different focal lengths etc or want to use experimental lenses. Basically different tools that do a great job. I am very happy with all my gear, but I love my GRiii as you say fir reasons that I may just be justifying to myself. I wont even contemplate which one I would give up if i had to choose . Is it expensive? That obviously depends on your available funds, id it good value for money? For me definetly their is a joy in using it and a simplicity that helps me forget the camera and concentrate on the image creation.

For me MFT has been a real gem 💎 Personally switched to and back from full-frame! The small form factor and huge arsenal of tiny lenses is what makes me coming back to MFT system. I personally use a GH5s with tiny little fantastic lens 12-32 pancake and Oly 40-150 f4 for my travel hiking videos and if I don't hike a lot I pair the camera with Oly 12-100 f4! If OM system and Panasonic can really bring back those good old tiny series bodies and lenses such as GM, GX, EPL or GH series with small form factor using the latest and greatest feature together with new tiny lenses similar to there 14mm f2.5 or smaller zooms then MFT system will be a true winner 🏆 With the recent release of GH6 Panasonic is going in a wrong direction making the tiny formfacter that MFT is well know for into a gigantic beefy camera! Like you said it just feels good to hold a portable camera that you can handhold and carry along whole day enjoying the art of photography! 😀

Thank you for this Video! I own the GX80 with the 12-32 Zoom and the G9 II for wildlife. In the past i used the GX80 also for for telephoto. But now it makes no sence anymore. The GX80 is much more bigger and heavier than the GR3. So l am in the dillemer to change my "streetcamera".

I always thought you have to pick the camera you love holding with the lens you like looking through: image quality, lens sharpness comes afterward. To me is my Pen F. I bought an X100v as it came out and I realizes I never use it because I don't like the sensation of holding it or the boring 35mm (which originally I liked but not any more). Do the x100v have better image quality? Yes. Do I like to hold it in my hand? no: it's like a piece of tincan wrapped in cheap hard plastic compared to the quality I perceive holding a Pen F, and, to some extent, even my GX9.

Very true, it is hard to define exactly what makes certain cameras appealing to use. These thoughts rattle around in my head as well. I know what isn’t important and that would be technical specifications. 24 megapixels vs 20 megapixels or 10 bit vs 8 bit doesn’t matter for me. How the files look is far more important. The look, feel, size, weight, shutter sound and handling of a camera are important as well. I would like to see simpler cameras offered to market. Too often cameras are stuffed with too many features making them complicated, time consuming to learn and frustrating to use. Running two identical cameras with two lenses is my preferred method but now I’m keen to try one body and the Olympus 14-150mm f4-5.6 just to keep photography even simpler.

Once upon a time there were magical places where you could you could fall in love...camera stores. Alas, we now have few camera stores where we can ogle cameras, hold them in our hands, dream of owning, and see ourselves on a photo shoot. Helpful owners have been replaced by photopundits and e-stores. The joy of holding different cameras and local mentoring are things of another era. But, Matti reminds us of the delight that comes from holding a camera and enjoying the experience of photography. The camera's a means, not an end. Truly, the camera you love to hold is the one that will carry to capture memories. Thanks, Matti, for reminding us that photography is a love affair!

I miss going to the store for a “hands on” as well. I do appreciate watching these KZread and getting a feel for how the cameras handle by listening to the presenter and seeing how they handle the camera and lens. While it is difficult to live in a town with no camera shop anymore I do appreciate these reviews!

this looks like an honest review. I had an x100 but found it too big and complex. Have an LX10 now which is ok, but still use a lot of film with primes. This looks good as I would be tempted to get different lenses if I got a digital system camera and my FZ1000ii bridge camera suffices for all but the darkest situations.

E-M1ii and digital Pen-F are my favorite cameras to just pick up and use

As I downsize my equipment (big cameras, big lenses, and always at home because the weight) I buy the Lumix 880 with 20mm lens. The tilt screen ist great, but the controls are to small and I always loose the lens cab :-) Now I use the Lumix with the 12-35 and 35-100 sometimes. But the most (everytime I carry one of the GR´s with me) I use my GRIII and the GRIIIx. 28 and 40 mm are my favourites and I love to use the GR and the results :-)

I simply love the GX80 + Leica 15mm f1.7. I which Panasonic release the GX10 or a new GM and new fast and small lenses. From OMD I would love to see the PenFii. The Ricoh is very compact but give me a snapshot camera feeling.

One lens? What if you prefer shooting at 50mm --- wait for the GR IVz which may never come? I will stay in the MFT camp for now for street, though my Canon RP is good -- still prefer the focus speed and hit rate for street of the Lumix GX-9. Olympus is great too.

It's baffling there isn't more options for new fixed lens, quality compacts, as the cost of a GR is ridiculous really. Maybe manufacturers are afraid they'd kill the market for their larger system cameras. Having tried all systems, I use a mix of Olympus/Panasonic m.f.t gear which I love. But by far my most used camera (which i carry all the time) is a Cannon s120 - simply because it's barely the size of a packet of cigarettes & i hardly know i have it on me.

I'd be interested in your comparison between the Canon M line and the GR III. Maybe the M200 or one of the more sophisticated M models like the M5. Another potential comparison is Sony ZV-1 vs the GR III.

I recently had a chance to go on a Ricoh photowalk to try a GRIIIx. It's a really nice camera and it produced some great images. But I also had with me my Olympus E-PM2 with the Panasonic 20mm F1.7 and honestly there wasn't much difference in the image quality and I was able to get more shallow depth of field if I wanted to with the M43 setup - so I think I'll stick to that for a pocketable setup!

I have GRIII and yes, it wasn't cheap but it delivers great image quality. I have it on me at all times. I would still use my GRII if I had not sold it. The image quality is outstanding, and the camera fits in a pocket. There is no other camera that offers so much capabilities in such a small body. Also, remember it has a leaf shutter which means flash sync at ALL speeds!

I think Matti the ability to put the camera between you and your subject is an underrated feature. I have a Fuji XT4 and the Panasonic GX880. I enjoy the Panasonic one because it's easier to take pictures with it. The Fuji has a better image quality, but the GX880 is easier to use. Just a thought.

I can see the appeal of the Ricoh, but nowadays I just take 2 small m4/3 camera bodies with a small prime and I’m good to go. After shooting with my Canon 5diii last Sunday I have even more appreciation for the format.

Starting to look more into smaller cameras. Might pickup a g100 for a pocketable camera. I've also picked up a Ricoh wg-6 (poor man's GR) perhaps my gateway into the GR. Everyday I'm missing shots so seeking everyday carry size cameras.

What is it that draws us to a particular camera? That's a really good question, some cameras are more than tools, they have something special about them. I still have my LX5 from 2010. I don't use it much but sometimes I pick it up and it just feels right. I like the look of the GR and also the X100V... I have to convince myself one of these days!

I also like compact cameras with a fixed prime Lens, I would have had a Ricoh Camera if the built quality had lived up to the price tag. I used for many years the Minox 35 ML which I think are the best and fastest film Camera for street photography, I also used my Leica Minilux because it have the best Lens of any compact Camera. But now most of the time I use either one Sony A7RIV with one prime Lens or two with a prime Lens on each Camera, it is easy to carry a small bag. I do wish for a compact very good built quality Camera with a prime Lens that have very good sharpness and resolution, a flip out Lens like the Minox will be very good, I do not need it to be autofocus, most of the time I use manual focus.

as someone who's had the Ricoh GRIII for over a year now, the only thing holding it back is a tilt screen and/or viewfinder, and better auto focus. i know snap focus is incredible, but when you're chasing a child around, it's autofocus is probably the most lacking of cameras i've used.

with the Ricoh I've always been so torn. One side of me wants a more substantial camera that feels more like I'm holding something and using a tool for the purpose of taking photos. But on the other hand, I can't beat the pocketability of the Ricoh. It's incredible to just throw in a pocket. Having the largest sensor in the smallest camera comes with it's compromises. I bought a Fuji X-T1 to have a more "official" camera, but I find I'm using the Ricoh at least half the time still because i can just take it with me. If i were to go on ergonomics alone, I would have a Fuji X-Pro3, that thing feels fantastic in my large hands, but why bother spending all the money on something i'm going to use less than the Ricoh. I want to replace my Ricoh with something, but I feel like the camera doesn't exist.

The image quality with the GM1 GM5 and GX880 is very sharp with leica lenses.I would say better than the rico gr. And it is not a social media camera.This cameas are for all genres of photography.

I find the GX880 an excellent little camera. It has unfortunately been swamped by a wave of nostalgia for the GM1 and GM5 the likes of which are just not going to happen again. As 2 GX880 bodies plus lenses cost less than one Ricoh body there is no need to swap lenses but just get an extra body. Sell one of the 12-32's and get a secondhand prime. Plus if dust gets on the sensor the GX880 is an easy fix. The Ricoh has a shaker but the dust has nowhere to go so will accumulate in the camera pumped by that lens collapsing in to the heart of the camera. The Ricoh has its own merits I am sure and is more compact but at £899 against £369 for the GX880 with lens it seems an exotic choice for when you really need to put it in your trouser pockets.

Great stuff Matti.. Very detailed and useful.. But don't you think that for the GRs to have fixed retractable lenses make them prone to collet dust which makes cleaning them pricy since it is only doable by the company after-sale services? However I fully agree with you that they are so practical and capable cameras... Oh by the way... Since you have been a photographer for such a long time and since you are based in a country where the weather is humid for the most of the year as I guess... How would you protect your gear against fungi, especially the internal lens elements and sensors of cameras with fix lens design? Again thanks so much for your shared opinion and experience and thanks a lot for your feedback in advance and all the best.

Thanks. So far I have not seen any dust on the sensor of my GRs and I'm not going to worry about that until I see it. The humidity is not a problem over here. However, it's a real problem in the tropics where the humidity is really high all the time.

Interesting thoughts. To my mind, I'd say the biggest difference between the RICOHs and the GX880 would be the video and 4k video features, the latter being much better. Of course, if you don't care about those features, it wouldn't matter.

Thanks for watching. True, that little Lumix can shoot pretty good video, but it's still not a very good video camera. There is a severe crop in 4k, no proper exposure control, no proper audio etc. However, it's still much better than the GR, which is not really suitable for video and is not even marketed as such.

@@mattisulanto Yes, the video isn't downsampled from 6k or anything, but it offer gx80/85 IQ and crop (2.2x) for video. To get manual controls, one only needs to imagine 4k photo mode is actually 4k video 30fps mode with multi-aspect capabilities... that's great.

I am firmly on the side of the MFT here. The GR is cool, but the lens is 2.8, so with the 20mm /15mm 1.7 the extra light compensate for the smaller sensor in low light and in good light I see no difference between the GR sensor and the Gx9's. And price wise, the GX9 and the 20mm and the 15mm will be less than the 2 GR's. I won't even mention the video capabilities as there is no competition here. The GX9 trashes the GR's I understand the concept behind the GR being small and pocketable, but with a phone, wallet and keys etc I surely will need a small bag for my camera. In my opinion since there is the GX80 or GX9 and the 14,15,20mm (or even the 12-32 in good light), I think they are much better for the price, quality and versatility.

Yes and my GX80 has an effective pop-up flash and all kinds of trick features including excellent IBIS and 4K photo features including pre-burst and auto-panning/zooming. Never had an issue with GX80 picture quality. If Ricoh is better then I retort that my 47mp Leica Q2 is better still but quite frankly, yes, I do not care and not even that is significant unless I crop drastically. It is indeed a matter of opinion and I do actually own a Q2 and a Sony A7III with various primes. If I want ‘compact’ I take the Panasonic but usually have an extension grip on it, so pocketing it cannot rate highly in my priority. Sometimes, yes, and the grip is easily removed. Similarly my E-M10 Mk2 but the viewfinder makes this problematic to remove from most pockets, so a little bag is the answer, along with a couple of primes and the Lumix 12-32

Phone, wallet, keys. How many pants pockets do you have? That should be enough? When you wear jackets do they have pockets? The size, weight, and amount of bulge you get really is huge between the two. I do agree for what it is the Ricoh shouldn't be so pricey.

I currently own the GRIII, and while the image quality is nice, I've become too afraid to use it due to it developing dust in the sensor. The fact that the lens is a retracting design causes it to pull dust into the body over time with no ability to easily clean it. I'm currently looking for a compact system with good image quality with interchangeable lenses, but never really considered an m43 system. Maybe I'll have to rectify that.

I had an entry-level m43 camera that I used for street/travel, and ultimately I sold it and purchased a GRIII. I find a lot of your comments spot-on. The best shots from the GR3 are simply better than the best shots with my old Oly. But I've never gotten completely comfortable using the GR3, and I find that because of difficulty composing on the fixed screen (esp outdoors), more often than not I'm not getting a full 24mp. I do wonder if I'd be happier with a modern, entry level m43. In addition to higher resolution, the 20mp sensors are claimed to have better dynamic range. I would have a hard time parting with the GR, but I might find a way to rationalize giving m43 another try. Video capability might be how I convince myself it was a rational decision 😁 (see roughly 10:30 mark of this video)

€2000 in Ricohs, vs €600 in Lumix with the lenses bought second hand... Personally, I would rather have the Lumix and a oval weekend in some large city, putting the 880 through the wringer vs sitting at home and fumbling with the Ricohs. Not that I am not somewhat intrigued by the 3X, and have stated that if the brought out a 35/40mm I would get one, but not untill I have used up the GM1, GM5 as well as the 800 and 880. Those four combined had a smaller price tag than either one of the Ricohs, and somewhat on par with what a III goes for second hand over here, unfortunately the big cities has had to wait for a while. 🙂

Second hand gear is always cheaper than new😀 But I understand that the GR is not for everyone.

Matti, my street photography camera is the GX85. It does a fine job. That said, I'd love to have the GR3X. I'd also love to have $1000 USD. It's a hard choice.

For modern cameras the difference in image quality is irrelevant. Often the quality of the presentation is the decisive factor. (print service quality, calibrated monitor, ...) It is much better to choose the camera based on the features (you need) than to listen to the pixel-peeping nerds.

Every fixed lens camera I have owned, has dust on the sensor sooner or later. A camera made to fit in a pocket requires sealing from the things it comes into contact with. If the camera requires a case it loses the advantages of a pocket camera.

I go for a walk with three cameras. I'm crazy, yes. Sony RX100 vii - main creative camera. GR3x - camera for fun. iPhone 13 pro max - camera for all occasions & video.

Great to hear! On the weekend at the beach with my family and dog, I was shooting a GoPro 9 for video, a Sony rx100 vii for slomo and an Olympus EM5 mkiii for everything else. I was fully entertained but still think I should get back to one body one lens. Crazy is right.

Since it is an almost 15 minute video , it would have been nice to mention that the Ricoh models you show cannot shoot using the 4.3 ratio while the mft model can choose either 4.3 or 3.2 . Also maybe mention the snap focus distance which is the main distinguishing feature of the GR versus ILC or even other compacts . Decent review but could have been more informative

so the length of the video determines which topics gets covered? sheesh he made a video about the stuff he wanted to... if you want certain things in a video make a video about it?

I’ve tried just carrying just one lens but it’s not always practical; sometimes you need to get closer or further and it’s not always physically possible. If you don’t want to expose your sensor or don’t want to waste time changing lenses, two inexpensive tiny bodies can be a great option.

Phone camera quality has surpassed micro four thirds.

Gr3 has 40mm equivalent lens. I prefer the 28mm equivalent on my Ricoh 8.1 megapixel camera. I like to get in close on the streets. I mostly shoot in black and white. I also have a Fujifilm X10 but rarely use it. My Ricoh is always in my pocket. I hate camera bags. If I wanted to buy another 8.1 megapixel Ricoh gr digital camera I could get one for £125 from Japan.

MFT rocks. From tiny (GX80, EP-L series) to Pro level. And can handle all my lenses😉

"There are some tiny m43 cameras that have IBIS..." - so funny how even after leaving Panasonic's orbit Matti still can't let himself say the word Olympus.

respect your opinion, but i disagree. Pair the Lumix (even that particular ancient model!) with the Leica 25mm 1.4 or the Nocticron 42.5mm 1.2 and that combo destroys any fixed lens camera. Yes i know, i know, the weight is far more but here we speak about quality and sense in hands that i hold a real camera and not a toy. With every respect...

Thanks for your opinion. I respect that as well, even though you are comparing apples and oranges😀 Even a medium format camera has its place.

They say the best camera is the one you have with you. Being pocketable is a huge advantage for a camera in many situations (which is why people love their phone cameras). The Ricoh GR is great in this respect, and the picture quality shines (as opposed to phone cameras). Therefore I like it very much. But when I go out to shoot pictures I don't mind a larger size. I guess every camera has its purpose.
