I came to this country in 1958, I was 12 years old and orphaned. I had never heard what people call country music until then. Over the years something has happened. Things became cheap, easy, no sense of value. Our music has suffered the same way. The music, the songs that told stories about our lives, the things we hold dear, the adventures, and the losses, have faded and it's not about the song, the story, it's about special effects, just plain noise. I listen to the "old" country because it's the only one that exists for me.

I could listen to this song and his voice 24hrs a day and I'd never get tired of it. Greatest talent ever!

This man is from a time when singers poured their heart & soul into their music, their craft unlike the crap you hear today. You won't hear any one better for sure.

He Quit for the most noble of reasons to spend more time with his wife and his family,and I salute him for it.

Agree. I've seen him 6 times in concert. Never sorry. Got hugs everytime and autographs . Would go see him again and again if he was still singing. My favorite singer and looker!!!!

I just love Ricky's voice! Saw him once with my mom and grandma. We had to carry her in. Ricky was her favorite singer. It was an awesome night.

One of the greatest country music voices of all time! What a gift this artist has. I do remember that Marty Robbins did this song after Ricky did and M.R. got more radio time because of his notoriety. That was just B.S. in my opinion because Ricky sings song 100 times better!

I saw him perform once, live, in the early 90’s. He sounds better live than on the radio!

Ricky VanShelton and George Strait are the two BY-FAR BEST country music artists to ever step foot on any stage. His twenty-year career was FOR US WHO LOVED HIM AND HIS MUSIC was way too short. I hope and pray his life has been everything he could have wanted it to be.

I was so fortunate to see this man in person when he played a concert in 1989 and it was worth every penny. He was and still is a great performer and I absolutely loved his voice. I cried when he announced he was retiring from touring. I think he wrote a couple of children's books. Anyway he is happy on his acreage but I still miss his singing.

One of the best singers ever

This song hits so close to home. When Ricky sings it (after a couple of longnecks) it puts a lump in my throat just like someone is peeling onions nearby. Can't help it. Its as if when he is singing with such feeling its like he's reaching into your soul and squeezing your heartstrings. He is a wonderful singer and I wish he sang more. He may have had is reasons for stepping outside the limelight - but there isn't a day that goes by that someone plays Ricky Van Shelton & Patsy Cline on the jukebox.

The first recording of the song that I know about was Jack Green in 1969. David Ruffin' recorded the song around 1975. And honestly the best version of it I've heard yet is Van Shelton. I hate the phrasing on Ruffin's version it sounds like bad Sinatra. I listen to Bill Medley's version hoping that it might be worthy competition because he is a great singer, but it wasn't one of Bill's better recordings.

@@jerryweller7011 I agree with you! I first heard Jack Green's version on the radio several years ago and just liked the song. After looking it up, I listened to David Ruffin's version but it wasn't very good (imo) and then I came across this version and it just sounded much better.

I miss the great voices like his, so glad we've got a station that plays things like this still.
