Watch Extras, season 1 episode 3, titled “Kate Winslet.” In the episode, from 2005, Kate is filming a movie about a nun who saved children during the holocaust & she tells Ricky’s character that she only took the role because she wants an Oscar, and movies about the Holocaust are Oscar gold. Ricky wrote the episode, so he’s the one who came up with that theory…..and Kate won her Oscar for the 2009 movie “The Reader,” which takes place during the Holocaust & Nuremberg Trials. So, he says “I told you…if you want to win an Oscar, do a Holocaust movie”

It's a slightly weird thing in the UK (might be in other places too) - at certain schools, students would be referred to by their last names by teachers and then by fellow students. So when someone does it when older, it's a strange combination of formally informal, affectionate and chummy.

And sons of aristocrats were "John/Peter/Simon, Viscount of___, Earl of ____," (insert the name of their seat). And so in schools they would be called by the name of their seat or their surname instead of their Christian names, perhaps as a mark of acknowledging their place in society?

As a Brit, it’s just a form of association with someone you know. A lot of children/work colleagues will call someone by their surname as a way of familiarity. Gervais calling her Winslet is his way of showing they have a pre-existing relationship and this is how he probably addresses her.

He's actually referring to one of his old British shows "Extras" because Kate Winslet did an episode with him where she played herself impersonating a Nun who hid Jews during WW2. It's hilarious. In it, Winslet basically says she only wanted the part because doing a Holocaust movie was a foolproof way to get an Oscar. One of her lines goes something like "Sophie's choice, Shindler's bloody List... Oscars coming out their ass !!"

Then you have to consider that the joke in Extras was a poke at the shallowness of Oscars. Then the final layer is that him actually bringing this up AT the Oscars serves to reaffirm that he was right about said shallowness.

She should have won an Oscar for keeping a straight face in Movie 43 during the ball chin scene 😂😂😂

My favourite thing is how happy Leo looks 😂 he always seems to enjoy seeing Ricky, his face lights up every time lol

The humor is actually more subtle than that 😂 He's drawing attention to the fact that jewish people essentially controlling Hollywood is a thing, and that naturally a tear jerking reference to the Holocaust will hit close to home for them, thereby creating an easier path to rewards and accolades for actors in said movie.
