He said that one of his reasons for deciding to never have kids is that (s)he would be a Hampstead c-word. Hampstead is a rich area of London. He's saying that he doesn't want to be the father of a spoilt rich kid. However, that doesn't explain him making that decision when he was poor.

Us Aussies are born and raised to respect those who’ve come from nothing and made it- it’s the story of our country I guess and deeply engrained in our culture. However it doesn’t necessarily follow that we automatically hate those that have inherited wealth (ok well maybe just a little bit) 🤣 😝

  • @MandyCaneLane

That is a common thing to learn everywhere, but let me ask you this. Obviously most people would like to be rich for themselves which is great but if you have children or will have children, wouldn't you love to be rich so that they want for nothing and you can give them the world? Then why should they be hated for your hard work? People born into wealth mean that some one before them worked very hard to get that way. Obviously there are exceptions with corruption, and people not obtaining wealth fairly. Not liking people should be based on their personality not how or where they were born.

@@MandyCaneLane I don’t dislike people for being born into wealth, and I don’t think Aussies do either. My little remark in brackets was Aussie humour, tongue in cheek sarcasm. I know plenty of people who were born wealthy not an issue whatsoever. Aussies do not have an aristocracy and I believe this distinction is where the confusion lies. There is a degree of cynicism toward royalty, not so much the middle class. That being said, no I don’t want my children to “want for nothing”- I can afford to buy my son a car for example but choose not to as he knows he needs to work hard to get the things he wants in life. This way he values them more. He’s been very lucky and had a good life because i was the first person in our humble family to attend university and now have 4 degrees.. but he has still been raised to value hard work and not be given everything on a silver spoon. The latter doesn’t always make for good character.

I 100% agree with you on the "self made" thing. It depends on where you're born, what inherent talents you were born in an so on... I didn't choose to be unfunny and asocial I WANT to be pushy and driven and persistent and I have tried many a time and failed. It's just my nature, I can't change it. 15 years I've been grinding through the positions at the factory. Stared as a laborer, ended up managing a warehouse, doing all kind of administrative work and then finally becoming the egineer I was supposed to be, designing actual machines. It took me 15 LOONG years because I am unpleasant, unfunny, asocial, and not pushy enough. Yet I was proud. The only thing in my life I was proud of. But now suddenly we don't have enough work due to poor economy, production shrunk, a huge bunch of people had to be made redundant and of course I was one of them. Two days ago. Happy holidays! Do I hate myself? Yes. Do I think if I was more puhy and persistent and nice to be around I would have kept my job? Also yes, but it's just not in my nature, I can't force it! Some people are born with it, it's not just "Oh, I worked hard!".

Well yeah, dislike people because of their personalities, not how or where they were born. Almost every rich kid is born into wealth because their parents or grandparents worked hard to get there. With exceptions of those that got wealthy by corruption, immorally or illegally of course, but even then it's not the kids fault 😅

I went to a private school ( in the late 70s/early 80s) with 740 people whos parents paid for them to be there....and 9 like me who were on a bursary. The problem with kids from money is they expect to have skiing holidays, and they expect to go horse riding, and they couldnt grasp why our families didnt have a car for the Nanny (or why we didnt have a nanny).....its the lack of effort that comes with expecting things to be given to you that ruins some kids.

Happily, I don't have them as frequently as his "30 times per minute", but I have regular hiccups at the rate of approximately one hiccup every three to four weeks, sometimes two. I don't complain, though, because I know some others have it much worse than I do. It's just a cross I have to bear, I guess! 😜

Gervais is a problem, he somehow made a perfect comedy (Merchant being important there), then made another very good comedy (Merchant being important there), then he went to Hollywood, made some very average films, then he was free to make the awful shit he did like Derek and Afterlife. And somewhere along the way he decided he was a pioneer of free speech, and that he was somehow being censored despite him saying whatever he wanted to an audience of millions.

It doesn't logically follow that if you admire someone for making it big from nothing that you then hate those who were born rich Just that you don't have as much respect for their achievements. Going from a 0 to 50 is a better achievement than going from a 40 to a 60. It's not where you end up but how far you've come. Being born wealthy gives you all sorts of opportunities not granted to most, from private tuition and classes in anything you want to try to networking and connections that others have no access to. Lionel Messi's son will be given a place at Barcelona's youth training ground if he wants it. Even if he's not particularly good. And in place of another child in poverty who no one has heard of but who is 10x better. Kelly Osbourne cannot sing. But she got a record label contract because she's an Osborne. It isn't the concept that bothers me, it is that people born into wealth get automatically hated on when all they did was be born into a family where their parents or their grandparents worked hard. People should be disliked because of their personalities, not how or where they were born. I know a log of poor people who are just awful. Lol
