Having a real good laugh is one of lifes greatest gifts! Keith Chegwin was such a nice man, may his soul be at peace.
Usually experienced stage actors are almost immune from corpsing because obviously, there is no such thing as editing when you're performing a stage play. But even Sir Ian caught the bug on this set! 😂

I was surprised Sir Ian got so giggly!
The funny thing about the Keith Chegwin (RIP) is that he was always known as being nice to a fault. Even when he was in Celebrity Big Brother, people turned on him cos he didn't want to take sides in the arguments. But, yeah, I've corpsed plenty of times, and it's wonderful and horrible at the same time. And the more you dread it, the more likely it is to happen again. My personal trick when it comes to crying when I'm acting is to get in the scene and start inwardly telling myself "don't you dare cry, not about this, this doesn't warrant you crying", and then I lose it. It's kind of the same with corpsing. The more you tell yourself not to, the worst it gets. And then, through repetition, one innocuous word can become the funniest thing ever. I filmed a thing with a guy years ago, and the word in question was "aspiradora". It got so bad that now, over 10 years later, I can call him up, say that one word, and he'll be in hysterics.
Ricky's laugh is so loud, and a lot of people find it annoying. But I've always found it, as you said, infectious. I just have to laugh when he does. Ashley's laugh is brilliant to watch :) If it took 2 hours to do the pen scene, imagine how much we're NOT seeing. It makes you wonder, when you see the final cut, how did they get through it? Great stuff!

Ricky's laugh is fantastic.
11:45 That's Keith Chegwin, he presented a game show called The Naked Jungle, expect that's what he's referring to.

Thanks, I'd repressed that particular memory 😂
I used to love that Burt Reynolds comedies back in the 80s used to often end with blooper reels during the credits. The Cannonball Run & Smokey and the bandit movies were classics for this. Especially the Cannonball run ones when you consider just how many famous stars were in those. If you have never seen them, check out this video of the two Cannoball Run films blooper reels kzread.info/dash/bejne/Y5tkz85mfsbal9Y.html
Considering how much they piss about on set, it’s amazing Steve Merchant and Ricky Gervais get ANYTHING made!
if your down in the dumps then just watch mandy and she will put a smile on your face thats what your advice could of been mandy
Camera operater must have really loved him in last scene.....
One hears lots of stories about Ricky pulling faces to make people laugh when we can only see the back of his head. I strongly suspect that 85% of it is down to him. Great video yet again. Thanks ever so 🙂
Ricky Gervais would definitely be the best and worst person to work with at the same time 😅.
Hey MLC👍that was fun🤣I would never be able to keep a straight face with Gervais and Merchant in the same room. Great stuff, love the channel 👌
I've always interpreted Corpsing as the over exaggeration "I'm literally dying laughing" or "dying with or from laughter". But according to Google the term comes from the theatre: The worst possible time to uncontrollably laugh would be on stage, playing a corpse.
@SynphamyMusic

That's really interesting. I always thought the term would have some kind of root from funerals being the most inappropriate place for uncontrollable laughter... That thing where you're in a situation so serious that laughing is just this weird thing that your body does by itself to cope with the stress. I had this problem when i got sent to the headmaster's office in school once for doing work with a black permanent marker i'd taken into school... It went straight through the paper and marked the table underneath. Couldn't stop giggling in his face while he was telling me how much trouble i was in!

Hi Mandy. Thanks for covering this. This was funny.😀
15:04 in the late 70s to mid-80s Keith Chegwin used to present a kids game show that had guest bands perform, it was called Cheggars Plays Pop.

It’s not late to pursue acting. The world needs a Mandy blooper reel. 😝
I know what you're saying at around 6:30 but when actors get stuck corpsing it's usually because they know what's coming next, so they're laughing at the thing that going to be said later on.
The term corpsing stems from the theatre and is a tradition of trying to make your fellow actors laugh when they are not supposed too either when they are trying to do a serious scene or as the name implies the character they are playing should be acting as though they are dead yet another example of British humour and how we amuse our selves and tend to not take ourselves too seriously !
I guess you don't know Kieth Chegwin ( no reason anyone outside the UK would ), but just for some additional context, he was essentially a children's TV presenter which makes what he is saying so much more out of place.
You gotta love bloopers!

Thanks Mandy, this was fantastic! I love seeing people corpse, it just sets me off too 😂 Bob Mortimer of course is a terrible corpser and the late great Spike Milligan was dreadful for it too.
The Office, Extras and Derek outtakes are amazing - have no idea how they get anything done on Ricky’s projects. Check out Derek outtakes for Karl… I hate corpsing, ends up being so painful and frustrating, I used to be terrible for it in rehearsals, but have never done it on stage - yet.
Can you look me in the eye? Almost certainly not😂😂😂
Glad you found this, the flute one was the one I sent you.. you can see in the actual episode Daniel trying not to laugh

Thank you so much! Would have been an amazing experience for sure!
Love that you mentioned Karl Pilkington I love him he’s so unique and funny with his outlook on things. Amazing man. And Ricky is awesome too and Steve.
As you probably know now, “corpsing” is also the process of making something look dead (a doll, skin, etc., using theatrical makeup, effects).
I don't know if the world of professional wrestling took the term from show biz or show biz took the term from wrestling, but "corpsing" is a thing in wrestling. It usually involves getting a wrestler who is so deeply into his character to break character. Some of the targets over the years have included the Undertaker, Stone Cold Steve Austin, and Vincent Kennedy McMahon. Some of the best at getting other wrestlers to corpse are the Rock, Santino Marella, and Sami Zayn.
Mandy, you and Ricky corpsing together would have me die laughing! Haha 🙃🤪😅
G'day from Australia 🤟

It’s not so much what your saying you just become conscious of someone else and how they’re looking at you, or particularly if the other person is trying not to laugh
Hmmmm, learned something today...corpsing. And the origins also explained in the comments. I just called it having the giggles, or in Dutch 'de slappe lach" Me thinks Ricky is deviant enough to just do it on purpose or tr to get it from others on purpose. And for the viewer its just catchy
RIP Cheggers

Wonder what Gervaise does with his millions
The Office bloopers are more of the same, with Martin Freeman, etc. Ricky would draw dirty pictures and show them to people out of camera range to make them corpse.
Daniel Radcliffe was my favourite here. Corpsing seems like a really weird name for laughing, but I'm sure there's a good explanation somewhere. As always, you're an Imperial Pheasant. 'Ave an Avo And Toodles to you too!
@MandyCaneLane

Daniel Radcliffe did so good! 🤣🤣
Peter Kay was bad for this during filming of Phoenix Nights
“Corpsing” got its name from when actors on the stage would try and make the actor playing dead laugh. Changing lines, adding a comment, anything to make them laugh. Yet aware that actor was having such a difficult time to suppress laughter. Breaking character was also described as being “mortifying” for that actor. Sir Ian McKellen was on my train coming home from work on Thursday. He was speaking to others and no pretentious “Do you know who I am” malarkey. It was refreshing from such a distinguished actor.
The great thing is if Ricky is the worst corpser n it's his show it means he has to pay any other actors in the scene more money, for taking up their time longer. Lmao
18:30 ahhh that explains a lot - quel surprise! 🙃18:34 you look possessed or even demonic!

Hello beautiful Miranda, good morning.
It's called Corpsing because of actors playing corpses bursting into laughter mid scene, ruining the play.
I'm surprised you have ADHD yet you are awesome at art especially drawing. I assumed all the symptoms of ADHD would make someone unsuitable for making good arts :)
A good thing they weren't stage acting 🤣.
Think you’re right, ricky is like a terrorist attacking people n forcing em to corpse in scenes. It’s always him that ruined it 😂
