I was watching a documentary on German red light area and then Iran's temporary marriage law, I was surprised how come is it "freedom" in the West and "oppression" in Iran while both are doing the same with little variation that Irani law says if a man makes a woman pregnant, he will be responsible for the child and keeps paying woman until the child becomes adult. May be that's freedom in the West that in red light area if you pregnant a woman, you get carried away.

As one woman said, "Governments have war with each other because they benefit, but there is no war between the people." But there exist immutable geopolitical realities. Iran's government is hardly innocent, but it is the House of Saud that facilitates the intervention of the US in the region, as well as being armed by the military industrial complex of America with arms used on civilians in Yemen.

It’s Iran not Persia. Altough Persia is what we call the region in Latin languages, and what Greeks, and this Romans called them, Persia is a western term. The kingdom of Persia was a western puppet, named with a western not local term. Iran is the what it is called in Farsi, and the country is called that not in the western term (which again was imposed from the west). I still use Persia for the region (as an Italian) because that is what we have been calling it for thousands of year, however the country is Iran not Persia. Just like we call the empire Parthia not Persia (1st century. Persia was another empire). The people are all, and I call all Persians, but not the country. They chose Iran, we use Iran. 😅🤷🏼‍♂️ I don’t know why had so much to say about the topic.

Any country that America do not gain economically is a target for war. Iran, Iraq, Syria and Venezuela. All these countries sell their oil internationally but have restrictions on American businesses. America wants world power and dominance and that's why they sanctions countries that do not bend to their will. If wasn't for Putin America would have invaded Venezuela already. It's sad but it's the new war strategy.

This was always my most favorite video of Rick Steves in all of his shows. I took three Eurail trips between '87-91, staying at the excellent "Back Door" hotels he suggested and visiting places like Lauterbrunnen, Sterzing (Austria), Brugge (Belgium) that guided tours sometimes miss. I have enjoyed four guided tours, the most recent in '17, and one experience working in Bologna Italy visiting Venice on my two weekends off, getting "Lost in Venice" like Rick recommends, lol. One day I hope to go to Iran--I got to go to classes with many Iranians and Muslims in college who came to America so they could return home and help their countries with their education, and they were so hospitable and friendly and so far from politics, as most ambassadors for their country like Rick Steve's are. The area of Persia, the "cradle of civilization" is rich in history, and taught us the value of law, and urban dwelling, and helped humanity find a home in times of famine, in their day. I one day hope to visit, though I am aging, I would find a trip there more interesting than visiting Israel, not because of dislike of Israel, just because I want to walk in the less modern places, less luxurious places, where family life can still find happiness. All my life, I have found travel enriches more than riches but I also have no problem with world leaders sharing their rich architecture since I feel such tourism opens communication.

This might be my favorite episode of Rick Steves' show. I am both fascinated and mystified by the Middle East, especially since I know so little and the information we receive in America is limited and skewed. It's refreshing to see an objective, respectful documentary such as this, which gives a more human look at the largely misunderstood country of Iran. I was just as surprised as Rick to see that many Iranians actually welcome Americans! It just proves that the government does NOT represent the people. Iran seems like an incredible, dynamic country and I hope to visit one day. As always, thank you Rick Steves, for your wonderful program!

I realize that Iran is incredibly flawed and that the government is oppressive, violent and cruel. Just because I'm a "white western woman" doesn't mean that I'm completely naive about what occurs in the Middle East. I read the news, I know all about the atrocities. What I was trying to communicate is that we (Americans) should not judge the citizens of Iran based on the theocratic regime they are forced to live under.

All you said may well be the case, but I was expecting more travel tips than "oh look, an Iranian (man or woman)! let's observe it's behavior with our American norms set as the default, and explain EACH detail of how their culture is different!" It did come off rather condescending and ridiculous/narcissistic at points, particularly when he was interacting with women... he made a fool of himself, and we didn't learn much new.
