Rick Sanchez Is Suic*dal. Wow - Rick And Morty 2x3 Reaction

This episode is great because you start to watch it thinking it's just another Rick and Morty adventure with some good ol' nonsense going on but then RICK tries to k*ll himself??? And when you watch closely, you realize that you can even see him spiraling down and slowly entering this depression episode. It takes you off guard.
Hey this episode also serves as grounds for a good debate about Rick's sexuality...What do you think?

I think your analysis of Rick's scene in the garage at the end was spot on. He was surely keeping that little blob creature for some selfish purpose just like the alien Jerry and Beth found in the basement. After the breakup with Unity he had a moment of pity and respect for lesser minds and their sovereignty, and decided to free it of its constant suffering. Then he wanted to end his own suffering but accidentally passed out. He'll be back to his usual self next episode.

Haha, yeah I think the small creature must've been some result of a life-creating experiment or something that he did sometime when he was bored. Turned out horrible and suffering so does he end its existance then and there? No, he freezes it until he has a use for a creature to kill. I think he was testing that the deathray machine was working properly before turning it on himself, a good scientist always does a test run first (plus you don't wanna fail when your goal is suicide...). I never thought he passed out, I always thought he changed his mind at the last second and I don't think this is the first time he's tried checking out but can't. Interesting thought and makes good sense that he would pass out there, instead.

Thanks! I was looking forward to see if I was right or wrong. Although I don't think Rick or anybody in particular can just "switch" back to "normality", I think this is part of who Rick is and he just carries it around. We are all multilayered, after all (please have in mind this is an opinion from someone who's only watched one and a half seasons of this show 😄)

interesting ideas, I believe Rick passed out because he had been partying overtime for possibly several days(?), you can see he was passed out through the night and into the morning not having moved with the garage door open the entire time. We all can think what we like about what that was about. Rick obviously looked sad and he was alone so it's unlikely that he was putting on a show, it should have been a private moment so there would be nothing there but honesty.

I just wanted to let you all know that I few days ago, my computer DIED and that's why my posting schedule has been kind of messed up ( I edited this video on my brother in law's computer). There's definitely a "turn your brain off and laugh" low level of humor as well as above-par "turn your brain back on to figure out why this is funny" level of humor. They try to draw each episode and season around the concept of the Hero's Journey, so you are seeing deep character development. Everything is drawn from the experiences of many writers working on the show together.

Some fans believe that the little critter Rick destroys at the end is from the world that he Cronenberged. He was keeping it to experiment on it in hopes of fixing what he did there (after all, the Rick whose place he took in this world was able to do it). Destroying it meant that he was giving up on that idea. Others say that Rick was about to commit mass suicide with that device. It would not only destroy him, but ALL the Ricks in the multiverse. I'm not sure where this theory comes from.

Rick and Morty really have a knack for gallows humor. Imagine what it is like to have the knowledge to do almost ANYTHING that a human can survive, except for sustain a part of a healthy relationship? Imagine being perceptive enough to realize that of all the things which Rick can do in the universe, the one thing that he is an utter, miserable failure at is what nearly every other human does naturally. It's a comedy but I think they can often be the deepest fiction. Tragic characters are also common in this (or does that make it tragicomedy?) Rick lives the epitome of existential depression. He knows there's infinite universes so basically nothing really matters, except personally. He's lost all his loved ones except for Beth and the grandkids, so he's emotionally miserable on top of the purposelessness he can't avoid being aware of and he's not even particularly proud of his family. (He's proud of Beth, personally, but disappointed she married Jerry and while he loves the grandkids, he doesn't respect them or their intelligence, as half of that comes from Jerry.) Having this family left still anchors him to his humanity, so he can't even escape that, by suicide or by changing himself into something that doesn't care.

Just noticed that discussion line about Rick's sexuality. Good question after this episode. I'd say he's represented as fully heterosexual, as we don't really see him show any romantic or sexual emotions toward male characters. Even Unity is mostly presented through female persons, so I think the sexual contact he has with her male persons is for him a kink. Like the giraffe. Like the crazy adventures and drugs and partying he likes to do, due to his depression he needs to take all experiences to the max. I suppose this could make him pansexual like Deadpool, but I don't think that's the case for him. He's not that hypersexual as a character, he's just super non-judgemental, again getting back to that existential depression and his thinking that moral judgement is naive.

He met Unity, thought she'd be able to swap them back and couldn't, and the blob creature at the end was his first attempt at making a Morty body without a mind. And this all brought it back for him. This is the episode I resonate the most with. I'm not sure what that says about me, but I'm pretty sure I understand.

See, Rick realized that his only chance at love was with being on such a higher plane of existence, that he was going to spent the remaining part of his life alone. having that kind of epiphany shortly after getting dumped is enough to throw anyone into the deep end emotionally. And with Rick high intelligence, the consequences of his actions in life and the futility of trying to build a family became apparent to him. He is his own greatest obstacle.

Don't worry about one of the Ricks killing himself. There are plenty more Ricks - don't forget Rick goes around killing other Ricks now and then too.

I don't know how true this is but I've heard the machine rick almost killed himself with don't only kill you but all versions of you, so if he would have died all ricks from all universes would too, but that could easily just be a made up theory

There are so many great ones, hard to pick a favorite... but I think that may be my favorite as well. Off the top of my head, that one or the one with Rick's daughter's fantasy land.

This episode snd the episode where they bury the dead version of themselves imo were the episodes that really made this show what it is. I like them all but these 2 episodes were so fn deep they make any other animated show look shallow.

It's funny cuz it is that deep. Rick is a seemingly narcissistic sociopath but in reality he's just trying not to get too attached because at any moment he could lose his current family all over again and start from scratch. He's a depressed lonely asshole who wants to feel good so he does a bunch of crazy shit all the time. And besides all the sci-fi adventures and raunchy humor, this is the reason the show has continued to be so popular. Because the emotional depths that the creators of the show go to for the characters. That's why so many relate to Rick, he's a fuck up depressed piece of shit, just like the rest of us... But also like super intelligent and dope.

Not so “fun” fact. Dan Harmon was going through a divorce while writing this episode…Apparently the entire thing was written by him.
