Awesome Rick! Thanx for highlighting a precious historical Canadian gem. Each year we journey down the system and marvel at the natural beauty and the AMAZING engineering of Colonel By. Thank you Parks Canada for an epic navigational season! PS. Remember the year you came to Portland and skated in spandex! Hahaha . #GoodSport

......I've lived in Ottawa almost my entire life and I had no idea the Canal was that long. I thought it ended at Dow's Lake wtf.... (Also the area where that little bridge Rick canoed under was where I took my girlfriend on our first date... that's so cool! :D)

Sadly the prices have gone up so much to go through the canal it's cheaper to trailer your boat down to the St.Lawrence then go through the locks. So unless you want to experience it once there is no other reason too.

If you are referring to malaria, please read about the history of the building of the canal. Malaria was a real danger for the workers.

Not nowadays, but malaria used to be present much further north than it is today.

Also like...... the Rideau Canal is infamous for how fucking disgusting the water is. Like I live in Ottawa and I stg you cannot see more than a cm into that murky crap. And there is always a mild.... scent to it. One time the Ottawa Citizen put out a notice that it wasn't safe to eat fish caught in the canal THAT YEAR, and everyone was commenting in horror that ANYONE ate ANYTHING _EVER_ from the canal.
