It's not just the attachment, it's a combination of trust and unexpected competance. Ricks die all the time. We learned that in The Citadel. How many times has c-137 Morty saved Rick? He's surprisingly competent and... Well, smart. As far back as the pilot episode Morty has been surprising Rick with unexpected competance. There's a reason Rick reintegrated with his family and he didn't choose C-137 by accident.
