The death crystal shows every possible way Morty can die. Morty's simply following the path that leads him to dying old with Jessica telling him "I love you." That's it. The death crystal isn't guiding him either. Morty is just struggling to discover which words and action that leads him to the correct death. That's also why he denied seeing Jessica naked.

We learned from Dogma, that even knowing the day you die could take all the fun out of the time you have left. Part of the thrill of doing something dangerous is knowing it's dangerous, but it's not dangerous if you know you can't die.

I’d say the first few episodes of season 5 are some of the best, then the middle part of it feels mid, but then the final episodes being pretty good.
