Jerry gave Beth an ultimatum and chose her father, highlighting Beth's need for him in her life. If Jerry never made that ultimatum they would've probably stayed together

Not really. The pair were never a good one even in season 1, and I'd say that the ultimatum was just the moment when they both, even if temporarily, gave up.

idk how Aaron didn't see the relationship getting worse with each episode, without even a great starting point for them. In season 1 episode 5 Beth was already prepared to leave Jerry (for a Meeseeks) because she wasn't happy with her situation. And ever since Jerry lost his job she lost more respect for him every episode. These "getting back together" moments were always a kind of artificial high for them, they were forced and didn't come from them truly working out their problems. Maybe it's only when you rewatch the episodes that you notice these things, but for my first time watching it I really didn't think their seperation was unexpected or weird

If you have an understanding of toxic or codependent relationships, Jerry and Beth's relationship should be easily noticeable through the 1st and 2nd season....not noticing it immediately is understandable if one is still uncertain as to their intentions or motives, but after learning of their codependent relationship, Beth's superiority complex, Jerry's jealousy, and BOTH of their hefty insecurities, there ain't much excuse in still defending their marriage up to this point.

I find it really difficult to even form a theory of mind for a person who doesn't understand that a relationship propelled by fights and grand gestures is basically the definition of doomed.

You're very right about not being able to predict what'll happen next. don't think, given 100 years, you'd ever predict what'll happen next episode

Maybe not next episode, but they did predict part of a future episode.

"Your mom's lawyer said if I get enough on the settlement, HE can help me sue for full custody." The joke is that Jerry can't even afford his own attorney.

I think you guys are also forgetting what finally caused Beth and Jerry's relationship to hit its breaking point, which is Beth's devotion to her father. With every problem we saw in previous episodes between Beth and Jerry, there was always some sort of compromise reached or something that distracted them from their problem or that let them put it off until later (not saying any of these are good things). But when Jerry made the ultimatum of either him or Rick, there was no way around the fact that Beth had to choose, especially since she's terrified of Rick just abandoning her again like when she was a kid. So while their divorce may seem like a sudden thing to you guys, there is still a pretty easy to identify trigger that caused it.

WRT the Jerry / Beth relationship - it never was great and only worked because Jerry put himself second to Beth. It only stopped working when he made the ultimatum about her dad - which always was more important than Jerry to her - which then immediately led to the divorce. In this way the story progression makes a lot of sense.

As far as not quite having the same basis for post-episode discussion as most other shows have, just wait until 3x07. Can't wait to hear what you guys think on that one.

Aaron have you heard of a codependent relationship? They couldn't leave each other Even though they were having problems. At some point they just have to do it. They are always on the verge.

From what I understand, the divorce storyline, is directly used by Dan Harmon as a way to deal with issues in his own divorce. (If you watch the very end with the company "cards" Dan Harmon's "Harmonious Claptrap" company card changes from Season2 to Season 3.

I think the divorce thing makes sense. Yeah they always go back and forth, but that is because they have a toxic, codependent relationship. They didn't get married because they fell in love, they got married because she got pregnant with Summer. Do they care for each other after so many years, very likely, but the ping ponging of their relationship kept happening because they would just decide to brush off the real problems and be like "aww we do love each other." Some of that likely has to do with Jerry just backing off and putting himself second. The moment he puts forth that ultimatum of me or your dad, I'm not coming in second anymore, the relationship is over. Beth is so worried about losing Rick again that she was never gonna choose Jerry over him. That was the moment that neither of the could just brush aside the major problems in their marriage.

I think Jerry and Beth's relationship is one of those relationships I've actually never cared about, LOL.

It's just so incredibly toxic. I knew that, realistically, their relationship wouldn't last much longer, and I honestly was shocked, but not that shocked when they decided to get a divorce.

No, I'm pretty sure he does understand how toxic relationships work, he's just of the opinion that they didn't show enough of the toxic parts, especially when considering some episodes end with the notion that their relationship can work, even if it's only conditionally.

He sees every time Jerry and Beth "solved" their problems in every episode as proof that their relationship works when is actually proof of the opposite. We didn't see a gradual degradation of their marriage because their marriage has always been shitty, even before "the show started".

When Rick said there was only _a certain number of times_ they could jump to different realities, he was referring to using it as an *ex machina* plot device for the show; it's just him being meta. 😄

I just realized, these guys are going to be in for a real treat on Christmas day when they see what Rick becomes. You all know what I'm talking about. This is gonna be good. :)

Jerry and Beth have always had issues and it was close to reality that they went back and forth trying to stay together. Jerry made Beth choose and she picked Rick.

This season does a better job with continuity, in my opinion.

Every time Beth and Jerry have reconciled, it has been due to dramatic - even traumatic - events, but single events don't address the underlying issues of a relationship, and so the problems persist. On the opposite side, it only takes a single decision to trigger the divorce and Rick has been pushing Beth in that direction for a long time by this point. Of course, by traditional romantic comedy / drama rules, the powerful romantic act *can* in fact fix a fundamentally broken relationship, so it's understandable that you would expect those events to have this effect on this show as well.

When Dan Harmon was originally plotting out 'Community' his plan was that each season would line up with a stage in his "story circle" and i beleive that he is going the same thing with rick and morty. Briefly the stages are: 1. YOU = establish the protagonist (rick and morty go on adventures) 2. NEED = something is desired or wanted 3. GO = characters decide to set forth into a special world 4. SEARCH = collect allies and develop new skills 5. FIND = approach the inner chamber where you find what you were looking for 6. TAKE = paying a cost for getting what you thought you want and deciding to return 7. RETURN = the process of fighting your way, with new skills and returning to the home environment 8. CHANGE = apply what you found to the original setting...

I think the writer of the show and his wife got divorced before writing this season. If that's the case than the back and forth between Beth and Jerry could have been him showing his own life's struggle, and this season shows their relationship at its end

Why do they keep bringing up the part where Rick said they can jump between dimension a certain amount times. It's just a joke on storytelling. And the divorce thing, they always come across someone who would say that their relationship sucks and they shouldn't be together so that when the divorce actually happens it wouldn't surprise us as much.
