What can one say about this set? I am a big fan of Richie so it isn’t easy not to be biased, having witnessed amongst many others, all his sets at TW Mannheim in the period 2005-2019. A lot has changed during this time in terms of sound moving from more traditional techno from early 2000’s into the heydays of minimal and techhouse and now moving back to a tougher sound since the last few years. Richie wasn’t an early adopter in starting to play harder in the past decennium but when he did the way he reinvented his sound without compromising the driving, energetic and deep trademark Hawtin sound is remarkable. This set is in my opinion a testament how good techno can still be these days in a scene that is being dominated by mediocracy in terms of music selection as well as technical skills by many who are considered leading the scene. Richie is clearly on different level than all of his colleagues/competition. I was lucky enough to experience this set in person and heard him play 2 additional sets that week (Rave Rebels and Awakenings ADE Special) and this one at Shelter was without a doubt the best set of the 3 and would even consider it his magnus opus of 2021. This was definitely partially also due to the warm up by IMOGEN and Hector Oaks who both played great energetic sets, as well as the awesome sound system at Shelter (that was shining like never before during ADE) but when Richie took over it became truly magical! 🧙‍♂🪄 The built up and layering in this set is beyond superlatives and what made this set especially stand out compared to the other, shorter sets that week is that the tracks (which is a great blend of techno, acid and surely still some minimal) and mixing got more breathing space where the full potential of the tracks in combination with Hawtin’s genius skills of the Model 1 got unlocked!🔥🔥🔥 Having listened this set a-z 20+ times and counting I keep finding new details and nuances that never stop to amaze me. Looking forward to hear him play soon live again, hopefully 26 Feb in London! Cheers! (I know this is way too long but needed to get it off my chest ;)

I’m a huge fan of Hawtin too! I’ve only seen him play once and that was in the uk in Birmingham Decks Efx 909, it’s a night I will never forget.

What did he invent? There are 30 years of Techno behind him. Even a kid can make minimal techno, especially with Ableton. No classic training, music talent and vocal training required. You clearly never played with a drum machine or a synth in your life to be fanboying like that. Without mentioning this is a MIX, means, these amazing tracks are to be credited to other 40 artists, not him.

Its not just “making it “ ,making a track has so much work besides putting the sounds together. And yes, richie is a pionner, producers/djs like him or chris liebing for example, were the first ones , or at least the most famous to introduce so many machines in their sets and not just the turntables. I love hearing sets with just cdjs of turntables but with so many machines they can be more creative or at least they have more tools to do that.

Just to give you an example, Kraftwerk in the early 70's were giving instructions to manufacturers to create the electronic instruments they needed (because they didn't exist yet) and do you call some dj born in the 80's, who simply added some piece of real hardware to his mixing setup a genius? I wonder how limited is your intelligence and how narrow is your music culture. That's simply someone who added a thin layer of personal creativity to a mix of music created by 'artists'.

I can agree with you in some way but i think none of us here said richie is a genius. As you said there are many who are consider way better and “real” inventors. In the other hand i think richie still is a pionner in some way. I have very little background in music indeed. I am not an expert but its ok, i’m always learning. But most importantly i think you can make an argument without making that kind of assumptions and attacking the person itself. It shows how fragile and snoob you are. An artist is someone who creats something new, a simple set is in a way an artistic creation. Two djs can make a set with the exact same tracks, the mix sound completely different and thats a form of art even if its “not enough” artistic for you. At least he made the techno scene grow and like it or not he created something. And for now you just created shitty comments 😂 And to finish i leave you with a phrase of a great artist “ Bye, Felicia “ 😂
