Richie Benaud's Fantasy XI... Bowlers - Part 4

Спорт

Now Richie makes the choice of picking 3 bowlers to represent his chosen best elevenof all time. One of them will be a wrist spinner; he has a choice of three. Two of them will be fast bowlers; he has a choice from six
Apologies in particular about the loss of picture with the Shane Warne footage. As a keen teenage leg-spinner myself, i used to replay the footage in slo motion so much, the VHS picture would distort

he should have been. Malcolm Marshall was one of the best fast bowlers of all time and everybody acknowledged that. He could bowl well in India and sub continent and even the very best like Lillie or McGrath or others could not. Also Marshall was not somebody who was very tall or had a huge physique but still the pace and bounce he generated, the verve and accuracy with which he bowled. Not easy. That is why he has the best average for the number of wickets he took.

Sydney Barnes must have been amazing and seems to have been a a "once-off" freakishly great bowler who has not been emulated in style.Any bowler of great accuracy capable of swinging the ball in (or "swerving" it in his case) and then moving it away off the wicket to hit top of off would have dismissed any batsman in any era.He could move the ball the other way too and obtained lift off the pitch.A one off champion bowler.

  • @tryarunm

    @tryarunm

    Жыл бұрын

Do you know from whom he learned to swing the ball? From baseball pitchers he met on his visit to the USA. Those great pitchers, I apologise I can't recall their names now, taught him how to keep one side of the ball shiny while letting the other side get rough and dampening it with saliva. What Ranji wrote of WG Grace applies equally well to Barnes, "He turned the old one-stringed instrument into a many-chorded lyre."

Sydney Barnes describes himself as a spinner...in his own words you can hear him say it on youtube. Boycott names him in hIs world XI and describes him as a bit faster than Underwood. So I don't know why this lot are trying to make him out to be a fast bowler. The footage linked in the comment above mine shows the keeper standing up to him.

Hi all, The comments re Richie not picking any west Indian bowlers are all very interesting. I remember people commenting the exact same thing when the list first came out. I distinctly remember one commentor on another cricket forum calling it a "snub" to West Indian bowling. I can't really give subjective opinion as I wasn't around to see the great windies side of the 70's and 80's but on stats and reputation alone, Malcolm Marshall was at least as good as three of the names on the list...

@shutuprafa I suppose Benaud grew up with the "legend" of Barnes in the 30's, hence his name resounds more in his mind. Also, he states, he sought the opinion of those he respected highly & compared Barnes stats with those other bowlers of the time & Barnes figures surpassed them all But yes, a little suprised he would go for anyone on the basis of hearsay or others opinion. Granted Barnes had expectional stats, but Benaud would have never seen the man bowl a ball, not even on tape

Even Mark Nicholas says at the end of the video: "No West Indian fast bowler in the side?" Well, its Richie's personal choice, but like others have said in the comments section, I am surprised at the exclusion of Joel Garner, Michael Holding and Malcom Marshall. Also among the spinners, all 3 leg spinners? No off spinner or left arm spinner? Yes, I am aware that Richie himself was a leg spinner, but surprising that there were no B. S. Bedi, E. Prasanna, Derek Underwood or Lance Gibbs.

I think there is tendency in many of us to attach greater weight to players of our youth, or even those we have heard of, but never witnessed. I think Ritchie's judgement is affected this way. The truth of the matter is the modern player ie 1975 onwards is so much superior to players of an earlier time. This is not surprising - knowledge of the game has greatly improved, fitness, the mental side. And there are probably 10,20 times the number formally playing the game today than in - say- 1960s and certainly the 1930s. I don't wish to disparage our forefathers in this game, as they led the way, and without whom we would not enjoy the high quality of contests we see today (ie before covid).

There were players who faced both Trueman and Lillee , example Garry Sobers, players who faced both Lillee and Wasim Akram ( Viv Richards) and players who faced both Wasim Akram and Dale steyn (Brian Lara). So with just three WI batsmen, we get all the way from Fred Trueman to Dale Steyn. The testimony of Sobers matters when comparing Trueman and Lillee. The testimony of Richards matters when comparing Lillee and Akram. The testimony of Lara matters when comparing Akram and Steyn. Now if Sobers says that Trueman was better than Lillee and if Richards says Lillee was better than Akram and if Lara says Akram was better than Dale Steyn then it would make sense that Fred Trueman could not have been much worse than Dale Steyn, correct?

@jsquire5pa Good points you make. I probably over estimated growth in numbers playing the game. Then again think about 3 factors 1. The vibrancy of the game in India today vs say 1930 or 1960. Huge playing population right there 2. Growth in the game in minnows with decent populations - Kenya, Ireland, Zimbabwe. Also add Sri Lanka, although it is not a minnows.3. The numbers involved in formal competitions (vs casual/Park cricketers) with pathways to more senior representative cricket. Not so much in AU or England, but in sub continent and Caribbean and Southern Africa. You are 100% correct about the impact of knowledge and gear which greatly enhances competitiveness. But my point was to say - if an old great like Bradman of 1939 walked out to face Ambrose/Akram/Steyne and he can wear a helmet and hold a modern bat, how would he go? I reckon, not as good as say Ricky Ponting, because Bradman was not an accomplished hooker/puller, which is necessary now.

Substitutes: ( Barry Richards , Brian Lara , Adam Gilchrist , Muttiah Muralitharan , Sydney Barnes ) Coach: Bob Simpson. Manager: Sir Frank Worrell. GGBOC :- ICC . Above Team is Probably the Closest to Perfect and Most Credible All Time World Test XI List in Cricket History which is Co-incidentally the Mixer of WISDEN and ESPN Cricinfo All Time XI Lists. It's a Full 16 Man Squad and I have Deservingly put Two Proper Openers Hobbs and Hutton as they have a Great Records everywhere and seemingly Great Chemistry and Connection within them as they played mostly after post WW1 Era from 1920 onwards with much better Competitiveness and in a Developing Test Cricket era compared to 19th Century Cricket. And I have Top 6 Strong Batting Line up with Diversity so I went with a Specialist Wicket Keeper Alan Knott ahead of Wicket Keeper Batsman Adam Gilchrist who unfortunately Missed out due to I have a Strong top 6 Batting order as well as Strong tail enders too like Warne , Akram and Marshall who all can Bat also. So I went with a Specialist Wicket Keeper with a descent batting record, so I went with Alan Knott who was also a Man of Crisis Batsman. And But Gilchrist definitely has make into Second Test XI or Alternate XI of above All Time XI List. Then I have a 1 Great All Rounder Sir Garfield Sobers who is the Great Left Handed Batsman and can bowl three different variations of Bowling and 1 Great Spinner Shane Warne who would have a Great Right hand - Left Hand and Leg Spin / Off Spin Combinations with Gary Sobers. And at Last I have deservingly Put 3 Genuine and Complete Fast Bowlers Akram , Marshall and Lillee as 3 Pace Bowlers with Great Statistic Records among them and along with Warne and Sobers they brings Versatility and Varieties as well and also All of them played in The Most Golden , Toughest and Competitive Era of Test Cricket From 1960 to 2010 Era. And Imran Khan as the 12th Man and W.G Grace as Honourable Mentions as Grace was a Father Figure Cultural Icon of Cricket and Sir Frank Worrell is The Best Manager the Game has ever seen who can Guide your Team and Bring out the best from above players. P.S - Steven Smith , Virat Kohli and Pat Cummins are Active Players. So I will Judge them after they will retire, so we can get the clear picture of their Overall career. And Frank Chester , Dickie Bird and Simon Taufel are Umpires of above team as well as Richie Benaud , Harsha Bhogle and John Arlott are into the Commentary Box along with Historian CLR James , David Frith and Arunabha Sengupta who Judge and Write about all of these Cricketers.

Garner the hardest bowler to score runs off vital to have in match situations esp in tandem with warne to build pressure avg under 21 per wicket like Marshall who he complements so well. skiddy v bouncy with lethal Yorkers.

Agree. Though Akram or Marshall would on record rated ahead of Lillee due to on paper, Statistically they both perform better than Lillee as both Akram and Marshall are As Gifted and Complete than Lillee and that's why Both Marshall and Akram got into Wisden All Time XI List ahead of Lillee who got into 2nd XI List of Wisden.

No West Indians in there, guess Ritchie didn't like 5 Bouncers an over and 11 overs an hour tactics from the 70's and 80's.

Really Richie? Really? Dennis Lillee does not deserve to be called a fast bowler because after that one series in Pakistan (Where he got 3 paltry wickets in 3 test matches at 101) he never visited the subcontinent again. Take away the bodyline series and Harold Larwood wins about 45 wickets in 16 test matches (all time great?). On the other hand, a certain Malcolm Marshall (despite having a difficult debut series) or a Holding, a Walsh or an Ambrose did not shy away from the graveyard.

Had a great respect for Richie. How come there is not even a single West indian fast bowler from the bunch of terrifying bowlers whom every expert talks about. As on old man he likes cricketers of his era as he had seen much of them than the modern cricketers. But how come all three Australians from the modern era. lol .Does he only watches Australian matches or what? The cycle of human being => childhood=> teenage=> adults=> oldage =>childhood seems he finished the cycle once.
