Richelieu Rock, Surin & Similan Islands, Thailand Scuba (4K) - An Absurdity of Abundance! 😲

An amazing week of scuba diving on the Phinisi liveaboard scuba boat in the Surin and Similan Islands, 8 - 12 January, 2022. Most of the footage from this video is from Richelieu Rock, in the Surin Islands, which is well-known for its absurdly abundant sea life, and arguably the best dive site in all of Thailand. As you can see, it absolutely does not disappoint! 😀

    Thank you so much!! I really appreciate it!! 🥰😊 All of my videos start out with the natural sounds, but unfortunately with open circuit scuba, it sounds awful after a few minutes. 😫😢 If it wasn't so expensive and complicated, we would switch to closed circuit rebreathers, and it would sound better.

    Amazing video, revealing the beauty of those amazing reefs. I am visiting Thailand soon and I want to dive on the Similan Island. Is it possible to do that as a beginner? I only passed my Open Water Diver a couple of months ago and heard about strong current. How deep have you been on an average? Thank you so much!

  • @skipmcilvaine

    @skipmcilvaine

    Жыл бұрын

    The currents in the Similan Islands are generally not bad, and depth will max out at 30 meters, but most dives are in the 20-25m range. I would suggest getting your Advanced Open Water before or during your trip to the Similans. Most liveaboard operators in the area will teach it, and Nitrox (which I also recommend), while you are diving in the Similans, but make sure to book that with them ahead of time. I'd recommend the Junk or the Phinisi, but there are several good options you can find on liveaboard.com. Have a great trip!! 🥰

    @@skipmcilvaine they do get bad. I know Thai guides who dive similans for a living and they all warned me about currents being really strong. It is no wonder, if you look how they are located geographically

    Great video! We are planning to go to Thailand and Similand Islands at the end of this year for scuba diving. You mentioned that most of the footage from this video is from Richelieu Rock. Would you still recommend Similand Islands then?

  • @skipmcilvaine

    @skipmcilvaine

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks! Yes, Richelieu Rock, while not technically part of the Similan Islands, is pretty much always included in a Similan Islands scuba liveaboard itinerary. The Surin Islands are also included in a Similan Islands itinerary, and Koh Bon and Koh Tachai are excellent dive spots as well. If you book a liveaboard to the Similan Islands longer than 3 days / 3 nights, you are pretty much guaranteed to dive Richelieu Rock more than once. 😊

    @@skipmcilvaine Thanks for the video. Do you recommend the handle and 2 lights, or light setup with only 1 light and divevolk housing? With the tray and lights, one need lots of buoyancy aids.

  • @skipmcilvaine

    @skipmcilvaine

    Жыл бұрын

    @@mountains-to-the-sea Personally I prefer two lights. I often only use one, but when I can use two, I have better options for filming closer sealife and coral. One light from the right or left on a close-up subject will create a fairly undesirable shadow, that you can then "fix" with the second light, as long as you have articulated arms to spread the lights far enough apart. I use two of these on each side to try and reach a neutral buoyancy of the camera, lights, housing, tray and handles. And with two on each side, each with ball mounts and clamps, I can move each light anywhere I want. www.backscatter.com/Nauticam-90x170mm-Carbon-Fiber-Float-Arm
