Richart Sowa's Island Made of Plastic Bottles - COOLEST THING I'VE EVER MADE - EP2

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Man builds island out of plastic bottles. Richart Sowa lives on top of what most people just toss away. He collected more than 125,000 plastic bottles that he found in the trash and put them into recycled fruit sacks beneath wood palettes to make his own island right in the Lagoon in Mexico. He now lives on the island or as he describes it "The Coolest Thing I've Ever Made".

    the part where the mangroove roots weaves between the bottle is the most genius thing ever. They get so much stronger that way...

  • @jaroslavcech225

    @jaroslavcech225

    4 жыл бұрын

    I am not so sure about that, I mean I reckon once roots start growing through the bags with bottles then the bottles sooner or later are bound to get punctured, thus taking in water which results in loss of buoyancy for the whole island. So while the roots help to strengthen the overall structure, they will also ensure the structure will eventually sink altogether :D but maybe the guy invented some sort of way to avoid this, go knows)

    I had opportunity to get involved with this guy project here in Brazil and that was literally something else... he has a good energy and compromise with his project in a way that i've never imagined. I was collecting some plastic bottles and learning a lot about the process to get the island made itself: he said the same results that we commonly have in the nature when you're planting a seed of a tree for example, in this plastic island you gonna have the same results in a shorter time... I was pretty excited to help him out cos we were basically using a noxious substance that kills and pollute to gives life once again, to keep providing... Sustainability is the key.

    It doesn't really release anything.. Other videos, explains how this is working. But basically, the sun is what breaks down plastic, and it doesn't reach the under the island. Also, algea form around, protecting it even further. The mangrove roots, entangle themselves in the bags, and therefore create another barrier, which also holds the bags in place.. He is collecting garbage that would otherwise float into the garbage patch in the pacific ocean. Or lay and rott in some landfill, creating the microplastic you are worried about. Which will spread by the wind, everywhere. This island even creates a sanctuary for creatures living in the water.. Algea feeds crabs, shrimp and fish, which again feed bigger fish, but it also gives hiding places, where the same creatures can spawn. It's a nice ecosystem. His feces, are nutrients for the plants living there. It needs 2 years to compost, for it to be okay for food purpose soil. But leaves and such, also create its own soil, as it rotts. Micro organisms, will break down feces, and leaves, and make it into useful soil. Most ecological harvest, are grown in animal feces. It's the plants food, it's how they get the nutrients to grow big.. Even tasty.. If you water your tomatoes with male urine mixed in the water, they will develop more flavour, and grow bigger. It's called gold water for a reason. And it can also help keeping deer, rabbits and such, away from the crop..

    @@Galemor1 Yes, in a normal environment the sun is what breaks down plastic bottles. This is sea water and it will dissolve the plastic over time, probably a lot quicker than the sun would. Even steel / metal alloy boats get eaten away by salt water, it's extremely corrosive. If this was floating on a freshwater lake it would be different but that thing in salt water will dissolve.

    The plastic bottle idea is so intelligent that I'm surprised modern boats don't incorporate it more - plastic is relatively strong, easy to replace and when created in structure that resmbles or is akin to multiple chambers (bottles) decreases the chances of being sunk via damage. Also so much cheaper to build that you could do it as a laymen in your back garden, pop on an inflatable pool inside and you've even got a redundancy should the bottle be destroyed.

    He abandoned that thing and eventually collapsed. After several months of it littering the lagoon, mexican authorities had to take it appart because it was a potential hazard. It took several months and about 30 volunteers to finally clean all of the trash this guy collected there. He is nowhere to be found and doesn't take responsability for all the mess he created.
