Richard O'Brien talks to Mark Kermode about Shock Treatment @ the New Forest film festival

Комедия

Taken from the official website ( although I don't agree with the Glee bit!)
From Richard O'Brien, creator of The Rocky Horror Show, comes 'not a prequel, not a sequel, but an equal!' In the town of Denton USA, Brad and Janet endure marriage guidance on the set on a giant TV show (think Big Brother meets Glee) overseen by the mysterious Farley Flavors. Belting songs, hallucinatory colours, and an dazzling array of cameo performances (including Rick Mayall, Ruby Wax, and Barry Humphries) add cult appeal to this before-its-time gem which effectively predicted the rise of reality TV.
Special guest Richard O'Brien will be here at our festival to introduce the film and answer your questions with host, Mark Kermode.
Includes special award ceremony for the winners of the 2011 New Forest Film Festival film competitions.

I can't help but think O'Brien was colored by the film's negative reception and box office failure. The film is wildly imaginative and has a great deal to say about consumerism, the decline of the hippie generation into the same sense of complacency that existed before it and so much more. The story to me seems not so much convoluted, but deliberately complex. It's like a puzzle that doesn't come into place immediately but creates a stunning final picture. I could go on endlessly about it. I do hope that one day O'Brien realizes that he did in fact create an 'equal' to the Rocky Horror Picture Show and his performance is nothing short of fantastic.

I think the movie is more relevant now. Truly ahead of it's time. One of the mistakes everyone makes (Myself included) is expecting it to be like Rocky Horror. You need to detach it from the first film to enjoy it.

The soundtrack is incredible, and the story is actually way ahead of its time. Reality TV taking over people's lives... whoda thunk back in the early 1980s 🤣 Just don't take it as a sequel to RHPS and enjoy for what it is.

I'm mixed. On one hand, I love the social commentary and the music. But, the plot doesn't really feel natural, neither does the character motivation's,the actors playing Brad and Janet don't really fit and the songs aren't as catch as Richard's other material. In general, I feel like it was really trying to be like Rocky Horror Picture Show, but lacked the fun and sincerity that Rocky Picture Show had. I'd give it a 4 or 5 out of 10.

I think Richard's too harsh on himself. For a start, the title song is as good as if not even better that Rocky Horror.

I appreciate "Shock Treatment" for what it is, but it seems that missing the opportunity to give the fans the story and the film he originally intended will always be a great regret. Knowing that the film was basically cobbled together with bits and pieces of a more direct follow-up to "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" is one of the most frustrating teases in modern film history.
