His journey from a modest upbringing to the pinnacle of entertainment fame, traversing from the stages of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art to the television screens and stages across the nation, is a testament to his talent, versatility, and relatable authenticity. Briers was not confined to the comedic roles that initially propelled him to fame; his career was a rich tapestry that included ventures into dramatic realms, notably in Shakespearean adaptations on stage and screen, reflecting a depth that extended beyond his familiar comedic persona. His later years, marked by a candid battle with emphysema and a continued presence in the entertainment world, showcased his resilience and unyielding passion for his craft.
Briers passed away in 2013, leaving behind a legacy that is celebrated not only in the vast body of work he left behind but also in the memories and stories shared by those who knew him, worked with him, and were touched by his performances. His life, both on and off the stage and screen, remains a poignant narrative of talent, warmth, and genuine humanity, ensuring that his legacy continues to resonate in the annals of British entertainment and beyond. I used to be a taxi driver and I picked up Richard Briars to take him to a charity function. I ferried many famous people in my time, but I can honestly say that he was one of the nicest celebrities I ever had ' in the back of my cab'. Charming, humble and a true gentleman. He was a great actor and one of the few who could transfer from screen to stage with ease. His role as Martin in 'Ever Decreasing Circles' was a masterpiece of characterisation by an actor and Richard played it brilliantly.

@@DrMoorehen Margot Ledbetter had a great line, actually she had many great lines, one particular that comes to mind is Jerry is on the phone asking about his car, just on the off chance it may be ready. Margot overhears & grabs the phone & tells the person on the other end "there was a time when a promise was a promise & when someone said the job would be done it was honoured" then slams down the phone, "Jerry when you involve me with problem please acquaint me with the facts first!!! Or something similar. A great show, well written & beautifully acted.

A shame no mention of 'ever decreasing circles' - one of the funniest sit coms ever to grace British television. There is a very brief video clip at the end, but Briers' portrayal of Martin and his personal struggles against the chaotic reality of life was superb. I cannot think of a three eighths grub screw without seeing Briers combing the carpet with his fingertips, looking for one.

I quite agree, love that show. Watched it so many times and currently watching the reruns. Never fails to make me laugh out loud. Growing up in the fifties, I remember so many of my parents friends having similarities to Martin, Anne, Howard, Hilda, Paul and others. Watching Howard's character transformation and frightening the life out of Martin in the Snooker episode was hysterical. And who could forget Hilda's line "You'll never believe what Howard did to me in the car park!"

He had an amazing range as an actor which wasn't always acknowledged. I saw him play a villain in a TV detective show, I think it was an episode of 'Morse' and he was unbelievably evil and creepy as a nasty college professor. This was quite surprising considering what a loveable character he was in 'The Good Life'. I also saw him live in Shakespeare's Twelfth Night in the theatre where he played Malvolio who makes a complete fool of himself in relation to his romantic presumptions.
