No I just felt disappointed in them rather than annoyed. As I stated, I consider them to be a couple smart chaps. And playing dumb just doesn't translate to comedy for people you know to be smarter than that. It takes a special talent like Lee Mack to pull something like that off. We all know him to be smart chap too, but he is successful in playing ignorant. Good on them to try, but it was a fail and not funny. I like them all the same, and they are funny in other ways.

Britannia rules the waves!" NO, NO, NO! The words are "Rule, Britannia! Britannia, RULE the waves!" The difference being, it's not a claim to greatness; it's an exhortation to persevere. To keep going. It's telling Britannia to get off her arse and to get out there and not give up. The meaning is, 'As long as the spirit of Britannia remains vigilant and alert in the waters around the British Isles, its inhabitants won't be enslaved. It's telling Britannia to do her best to protect the islands by keeping control of the seas around them. That's all. The song is not a chest-thumping declaration of national wonderfulness, it's a statement of hope for the future. A lot of people - especially drunken Brits on holiday - get that wrong.

Initially "Deutschland, Deutschland, über alles" just meant that the many parts of Germany should unite to form one nation, not that it should rule the world. But as it was difficult to get that into the heads, we simply abandonned the verse entirely, which seemed to us like an entirely reasonable solution. Then again, maybe we just don't like our fascists as much as Brits do.
