Richard Aoki: Committed Revolutionary or FBI Informant? Part 1

We interviewed Richard Aoki in 2008 as part of our documentary "Merritt College: Home of the Black Panthers". In light of recent allegations that he was an informant for the FBI, we are presenting the entire interview, to provide insight into this complicated man.

The thing is the fbi literally stated the same thing aoki did in this first part he was a fascinated young soldier who wanted to always do more he had information that could help the fbi so he told his superiors who then hooked him up with the feds aoki expects us to believe he was offered everything he ever wanted in his second go round to a unknown future..cut it out bro he’s a informant in the phone interview he was asked about it and didn’t deny it he jus said it was conmplicated then not too long after he kills himself with his army and panther coats on the bed

The FBI had a program called CoIntelpro( which is still around today)Where j Edgar Hoover told every agent to have at least 1 informant in the black community & that included Shop owners to Pool Hall....I don't see it being hard for the fbi to get those informants just like I don't see it being a problem for the BP to use those same informants to get / give up information that would benefit them

Anyone focussed on Aoki are simply simple minded? Black Americans don't have friends and nobody should be trusted who you personally cannot punish! Everything starts from Grassroots and nobody should be trusted without receipts? There are two many evil people in places of power who are just as corrupt as Hoover, if not more so. At least if they're vetted we have a chance that justice will prevail!

there us something about this story. i have knowing about aoki for years. but i have just learnt about his FBI informant scandal. one thing that standout the most is that, why was his name the only name that is not concealed in the FBI files released yet they concealed every informant names. and the other part is that the FBI still has over 4000 files on aoki they haven't release. again why?. they didn't have a problem releasing files with his name as an informant but yet they refused to release the files on him. maybe he was an informant but the story just seems an FBI work of character assassination.

Such a smart brother. Not sure about his motivations, or to what extent he was a double-agent (playing game with FBI but shifting the info back to Huey and Bobby). On You Tube a video Exist of the FBI trying to get Malcolm X to be an informer. Malcolm taped the conversation. For sure, many of those women on the Panthers were on the payroll -many of them even attended Ivy League universities after the end of the Panthers (while the brothers ended in gutters on drugs).

@@dame5372 Well, generally speaking, and I'm not talking about all Italians, but the history of Italy and Sicilians were not good when it comes to blacks, even though there is that little dark secret about the bloodline of Sicilians. I know some friendly Italians, and I know some racists ones too. I grew up in New York when there was a lot of tension between blacks and Italians. Back then New York was a racial powder keg ready to explode after two racial attacks. One was the "Howard Beach murder" and the other was the "Benson murders". But there were many more incidences between the two. Blacks couldn't even walk through an Italian neighborhood without being attacked back then. I never understood why the two don't get along due to the fact that Italians were mistreated when they were coming to Amerikkka from Italy as immigrants. Racist whites didn't even consider them "white" back then. Back in the early part of the 1900's there was an incident in New Orleans were a group of Italians were lynched by a mob of white locals because they didn't like the fact that the Italians controlled the shipping docks. Even the local Sheriff had a problem with it, and he ended up getting shot by one of the Italians. That's what started the whole problem that caused those Italian men to get lynched. There is information about that incident. But now, Italians act like they were never treated poorly in America because they are a part of white Amerikkka.

+Lumi This was an era of "cold" revolutions as much as an era of The Cold War. Being targeted and handled by the FBI in those times should not really be any definitive means of determining someone's commitment to their revolutionary ideologies in those times. Revolutionary movements and their leaders should have and often did expect to be infiltrated by Federal agencies and like Huey, the cunning wise ones would actually try to use that likelihood to their advantage if possible. In fact to effect changes that most of which had already occurred legally on the federal level in the first place without making a mortal enemy of Federal agencies already well known to be ruthless, would have been the best strategy and I believe initially at least for many perhaps even Huey Newton this WAS part of their strategy. They knew that the feds were dangerous and in the position of enforcers of the FEDERAL status quo, but I don't think that the Feds were widely perceived as "the enemy" until the feds later betrayed these movement's goals which were usually up against local and state sociopolitical and cultural inertia. Because the federal treachery was also covert, they likely didn't even realize how much they had been betrayed until it was too late to adapt to that reality. It seems obvious in retrospect to myself but we all have different perspectives so some analysis in that regard probably needs to be promoted: www.thirdworldtraveler.com/FBI/COINTELPRO60s_WAH.html

+majest33 When I say revolutionary I mean in the sense of activists for "change" not overthrow of a government. I don't believe most of the movements of that time were trying to do away with the Federal Government in fact they had every reason to believe the Fed would be their allies. IF they had been real collaborators with foreign governments they would not have been taken down so easily, or fooled into believing they could effect and be integrated into policy systems by becoming informants. Also they would not have appealed to the legal systems as often as they did. There would have been an armed resistance "plan B" already in place before any of their public activities even began.

+majest33 Aoki is not the traitor here..Its the paranoid Federal officials of that era, racial supremacists from the very beginning, and actually the state, local and the fascist judicial systems that have betrayed and continue to undermine the people and communities of the USA and usurp the ideals and powers of the people that were once embedded in the US constitution and later the Geneva convention. This is possible because in an oligarchy, hypocrisy and nepotism are hardly even frowned upon.

There some more Asian in the late 70s and early 80s. Mike Tagawa, Richard Aoki, James Lee, W.E.B Du Bois, Mao Zedong, Thich Nhat Hanh, Yuri Kochiyama, Simmy Makhijani, Daryl J. Maeda, Ho Chi Minh, the there more Asian in the black panther party. Is all facts Asian was alway a big part of the black panther party. It just this new generation forgot about Asian in the Black Panther Party. Is what a shame that some black poeple hate Asian. When Asian alway stand up for black people. Google Asian in the Black Panther Party and research Asian Black History or Black Asian History.
