Rich Drew The Ride Series How to Manual

#richdrew #therideseries #manuals
Do you want to learn to do a manual on your bike? Well, watching this video might help you and it might not. It'll be entertaining though, I can guarantee that! In all seriousness, doing a manual isn't a necessity in my opinion. You can certainly take the time and put forth the effort to learn it, i'd say have the basics locked down first though.
Are YOU ready to come ride mountain bikes in Bentonville and hang with Mason or I? Well, shoot us a message at
info@therideseriesmtb.com
We can set you up with some guiding, on trail coaching, or a curated OZ Trails experience.

Once learned, the manual can elevate your ability to more strategically control your bike and look dang cool while doing it. It requires an upfront commitment to understanding what needs to happen and a commitment to actually commit to keeping your hips back. Good luck and have fun!

Look at all the bots! You’ve officially made it, Rich Drew. 👍😆 I’ve found purposefully looping out to be extremely helpful as a first step. It eliminates the fear and you can feel the balance point go by, so it’s easier to identify when trying to target it later. 🎯🙌

So what helps me lock my elbows and get the front wheel up is I first lean forward a lot, chest over bars. I then push the fork down into the ground quiet aggressively and then immediately push hips down and back. If I don't do the first step and just push hips down and back I tend to bend at the waist and sort of hang back but without the front wheel getting high enough off the ground.

Hey Rich, I really like your tutorials I feel like those will be the ones that help me finally get some movements. Clear, accurate and motivational. From your prior manual video it really stick with me when you said "this is an athletic movement". On that note, surely it would be a good idea to work out certain muscles in isolation at the gym? Which?

I like to figure out the height of the front wheel for the bike’s balance point. Then try to lift it to that position quickly and hold it. Its easier to make small adjustments. And then hip/foot back n forth movements. (Keep you butt back)

For thos like me that sometimes have to look at something a different way to get the same result... Squat down and push the bike out in front of you... (This is the exact same action as squatting and pushing your hips back, but might work better on the mind for people like me who's brains are wired a little different (Or in my case, missing some wires altogether). (I was told when learning to ski, Push your toes down and into the turn... Hopeless... Till I realised, Lift my heals up and away from the corner (like a Cutty) ... Perfect.. Hot Dogs all day.)

The way I figured out how to do it was to try it 17,000 times and then it suddenly clicked. I say that now, but I may go practice tomorrow and have a hard time again. Manuals are definitely a journey.

Rich, what size Delano are you on? It looks like the reach on that bike is relatively short. Would a longer reach, or someone on a bike a little too big for them make it more difficult to get to the balance point? I would love to hear some bike fit/setup tips to make this difficult maneuver a little easier.

Hey there! I'm 5'10 and ride a large Delano. I do think there are a few factors that play into how well a specific bike will work for manuals. Wheelbase, reach, chainstay length, suspension and setup, these will all factor in and it takes some time to figure out what works best for you. I think there is an "empirical optimum" as it relates to how easy a bike is to manual, but it then becomes a bit more individualistic from there. I think a more "relaxed" bike setup will help for manuals. For example, a dedicated XC bike is harder for me to manual than my trail bike. You can also try to switch your suspension into the "trail" or "pedal" setting and see if that helps. This will, in theory, make it a bit more direct and less vague. Good luck and keep me posted!

@@richdrewtherideseries Thanks so much for that insight! I see the geo charts for the delano, and the reach is not short at 480mm or whatever it is. Just looking at your position on the bike though, i would guess that you have a pretty long torso proportionally? To me it reinforces the fact that height alone is really a fairly unreliable way of fitting a bike. Out of curiosity, have you looked at or tried the RAD (basically a combination of reach and stack) method of mtb sizing? Obviously you have the experience to just know what works best for you, but I'm very curious if the RAD system would enforce what you already know, or fall short? It's a crazy new world of bike sizing, and I think a lot of folks are just really used to what they are used to, without knowing what they may be missing.
