Rich and poor - the inequality gap (2/3) | DW Documentary

Christoph Gröner is one of the richest people in Germany. The son of two teachers, he has worked his way to the top. He believes that many children in Germany grow up without a fair chance and wants to step in. But can this really ease inequality?
Christoph Gröner does everything he can to drum up donations and convince the wealthy auction guests to raise their bids. The more the luxury watch for sale fetches, the more money there will be to pay for a new football field, or some extra tutoring, at a children's home. Christoph Gröner is one of the richest people in Germany - his company is now worth one billion euros, he tells us. For seven months, he let our cameras follow him - into board meetings, onto construction sites, through his daily life, and in his charity work. He knows that someone like him is an absolute exception in Germany. His parents were both teachers, and he still worked his way to the top. He believes that many children in Germany grow up without a fair chance. "What we see here is total failure across the board,” he says. "It starts with parents who just don’t get it and can’t do anything right. And then there’s an education policy that has opened the gates wide to the chaos we are experiencing today." Chistoph Gröner wants to step in where state institutions have failed. But can that really ease inequality?
In Germany, getting ahead depends more on where you come from than in most other industrialized countries, and social mobility is normally quite restricted. Those on top stay on top. The same goes for those at the bottom. A new study shows that Germany’s rich and poor both increasingly stay amongst themselves, without ever intermingling with other social strata. Even the middle class is buckling under the mounting pressure of an unsecure future. "Land of Inequality" searches for answers as to why. We talk to families, an underpaid nurse, as well as leading researchers and analysts such as economic Nobel Prize laureate Joseph Stiglitz, sociologist Jutta Allmendinger or the economist Raj Chetty, who conducted a Stanford investigation into how the middle class is now arming itself to improve their children’s outlooks.
Part 1: • Inequality - how wealt...
Part 2: • Rich and poor - the in...
Part 3: • Money and power - how ...

I dont understand this attack and overall distrust on general media Most of the media and news I consider worthy enough to consume is well done. Even stories coming out of perveyors of filth (ie RT, fox news, sky) help the general public gain understanding of what slant the ultra conservative class wish to push. News stories and almost no story is going to be 100% across the board..it's up to the consumer to extract usefulness out of any one item...or simply disregard it. We should support all media...especially if they make a good faith effort to uncover truth.

The mentality of a property millionaire... Buy a piece of property for as cheap as possible, make any repairs if needed as cheap as possible, charge 3 times what the actual payment for the loan payment is, put as little as possible into the maintaining of the property, hopefully sell the property later for 5 times what was invested but will settle for 3 times as much. Buy a piece of property for as cheap as possible, tear down all structures if any, rebuild with a "better" structure, charge each renter 3 times the rate for a smaller space, do as little as possible to maintain the property, earn 20 times the loan payment amount, hopefully sell the property for 10 times the investment but will settle for 5 times the amount invested. Then people wonder why fewer and fewer people and businesses are able to grow and thrive financially.

It happens a lot in Ireland where the American vulture funds buy up every house and apartment all newly built you can think of. And then rent them out charging humongous rents which only a person earning at least 5000 Euro can live in without sharing. Thus pushing out many people including the natives out of housing ownership. It affects the immigrants as well who go there to study and start employment.

I am always impressed by the quality of DW's documentaries. Gröner may regret one day that he and his wife sent their kids to boarding school. He freely admits that he does not have the time for them during the week. Schade! He may live to regret that choice one day. A driven man intoxicated with his success but he finds time to support 'worthy' causes. Good for him. A very revealing window into his philosophy of life. The Siemens engineer's story highlights how 'market forces' have no regard for the commitment to quality that has been the hallmark of German industry and take no account of the bond that builds up on the factory floor, which is discarded without a thought for the welfare of those who have loyally put in so much, another Germanic trait, which is the envy of the world.

Well said. The top down pursuit of money/cost cutting slashes skilled workforce, i.e. more expensive, without any concern for the after effects. It happens in all fields. When I worked in mental health they cut the number of psychiatric nurses dealing with severely mentally ill people in favour of unskilled, cheaper, support staff. What's destructive is the lack of awareness of the negative ripple effects for such economic decisions, but I guess the point is to shore up your own wealth and let everything else be an after-thought.

More of this please - take a look at London and the UK where I live perhaps. The divide is so wide, many people do not realise how far away they really are from having the opportunities that the wealthy have. For example: If you send your child to private school/nursery - thats not enough - the wealthy are having their children privately tutored from age 3 in all areas and subjects. I know this because my partner and I were asked to do this work post - university by an agency we both signed up to for some short term work. Truly Insane.

I live in London too. One could do a fantastic documentary about all this here. Gentrification has happened with dizzying speed and reach, absorbing and rendering very expensive numerous areas previously seen as not just undesirable but dangerous. Of particular interest in the property market is the practice of extending houses not just upwards, but downwards into often lavish basements and sub-basements dug out from the foundations. In a number of instances, this has resulted in damage not just to the property under renovation, but to their neighbours too, since so many London houses are attached to one another as part of terraces.

@@globalismoblackman If we both work as sales people and you come in an hour earlier than me and leave and hour after me and you make the company more money, who should be paid more? If you get paid more because you sacrifice more time away from your family and you want to move your family to a better part of town, who are you hurting? If by your demonstrated willingness to work more, your children get to go to a “better” school and your wife is able to cut back her schedule and help the kids with their homework, how are you harming me? Since your wife was willing to sacrifice her income to help your children become better readers and get better grades, your kids are now getting better grades and a higher chance at a scholarship, who did you cheat out of that? Are you now the greedy money driven person in society? This is what happens most of the time. Most millionaires got to that level of wealth by paying off their homes and saving money. They have character traits and work ethics that lend themselves to increased income and wealth accumulation. They didn’t cheat or harm anyone to get there. They simply…..wait for it….played by the rules.

@@Roccofan Well said!!! Sadly very few people have this kind of mindset & mentality. As Christoph Gröner said in part 1 of the documentary, scarcity mindset is the prevalent thinking pattern in society.
