Wonderful project and such a beautiful skirt! One tip for home sewing beginners: You are probably making a skirt out of one kind of fabric like cotton or rayon and the ribbon will probably be made of something different, like a synthetic, so when you wash it, don't dry it on high heat or the fabric and the ribbon may shrink at different rates and develop puckering.

  • @bythebayou5351

    @bythebayou5351

    3 жыл бұрын

Prewash the fabric. Prewash the ribbon by putting it in hot water with a tiny amount of soap & swishing it around. You can avoid tangling by keeping the ribbon loosely coiled & secured with a paper clip or rubber band. Leave it in hot water for at least 15". Then rinse well with cool water.

I am thankful you explained about the hem width in relation to the waist measurements. The way you measured the line for the side seam made the A frame design clearer in my head. I hope to hear from you. Thank you.

Very good tutorial. Easy to follow, the only thing is that still in the United States we use inches and feet, yards. 1 meter is 39 inches not 36. So I had to get 2 1/4 yards to equal 2 meters. My mistake, I keep forgetting that every one else uses cm,mm, and meters. Thank you for making it easy to follow.

I always.. prep my fabric by first cutting off the White stripe ends. Or ends.. Then I put it into a bucket with hot water... I let the fabric set for about half an hour...It lets the excess dye come off.. and the fabric shrink and relax.. then I dump it in my tub.. then I hang the fabric out to dry.. I do the same with ribbon expect I dry it under a hot iron.. what this does is loosen up the material. This helps to avoid the bumps you get in the piece.. giving the work a nice smooth look.. hope this is helpful !?

I notice you didn't cut the Selvedge off. In a sewing class the instructor told us to cut the Selvedge off as it has tiny holes in it from the factory; the pins leave holes in the fabric as that is the way the fabric is rolled onto a drum. I've learned the hard way and that is to cut it off or it can mess up your sewing. Just a thought.Nice work. Thank you!!!

HALF OF 50 IS 25 50+25= 75 75/4= 18.75 INCHES SO I'D USE MY RULER (AFTER FOLDING TWICE, GIVING ME 4 LAYERS) I'D MARK MY WAIST PART OF MY FABRIC AT 18.75in RIGHT?? I appreciate the tutorial, very informative. I did want to ask why did you add the 15 to the 30 if 30 is the waist measurement. Will is always be 15'' or half the waist size? For example, waist size 49+24.5=73.5÷4=18.375. This was way too large of a waist for the individual. Or is this how big the bottom of the skirt is to be for the stride of the person? Just wondering why you added 15 if because half of 30 waistline or of always 15. We end up not using the math equation for the persons waist but did use the length but still wanting to know for future reference. Thank you.

R Butterfly Hello , thank you for the question, where to start?!? There are so many styles and ways of making them , I always add at least 10-15” to the waist/hip measurement, however, a person could add as many inches as they’d like, depending how full they want their skirt, I vary the measurement depending on custom order preference. So if your waist measurement is 49 , you can add as little as 10 or 15” to that . If you add 15” ◼️◼️◼️ it will be 49+15=64. 64➗4= 16”, your waist measurement would be 16” , so you would carry that measurement down to the bottom measurement, instead of 15 at the bottom , you would do at least a 16” bottom measurement , or larger if you prefer, I hope this makes sense , I think I need to do a measurement video ,

I saw on another video in the comments, that someone puts a dab of corn oil on the tip of the sewing needle every so often and it helps she said.

If you use s glue stick, do you need to wait for it to dry so the ribbon hold?

YES or it can stick to your needle. However I believe it is better than the spray stuff as it does not get on other surfaces as you spray.

The added 15” on the hip/waist measurement, is that for the top or bottom of the skirt? If it’s for the top, what 15”? Thank you in advance.

Did you but your fabric into 2 pieces a front and a back? Also if you did how did you cut it into pieces?

One piece, 2 meters. , folded in half and then folded in half again , So it’s one piece folded 2 times , mark measurements as shown and when it’s cut, you end up with 2 pieces, the front and back

This is probably a dumb question...on each ribbon, did you sew both sides down or just the top? Wado!

Mo sepk'eec'a, I am making my first ribbon skirt and I wanted to ask when half the biggest measurement and it came out as 22.5. Do I just use the 22 or 22.5?

I have a question! If I am doing a 18 inch waist (13 in your tutorial), how large should the bottom measurement be for the skirt? Would it be safe to add +3-4 inches and go with that measurement for the bottom?

  • @MountainSoulStudios

Yes you could add 3-4 inches or you could draw a line straight down and also have 18 inches at the bottom

Thank you! I have some questions, if that's okay. Is it okay for a non-native to wear this skirt? What kind of shirt would you wear with it?

@@rhondicee4061 they weren't taken from the Spanish and also we were given white last names by the government when they killed us all so you can't call her out on her last name. And if you arent native you cant tell us what we can or cant consider cultural appropriation.

You can wear any shirt you want and you don't have to be First Nation to wear it AND I am a Plains Cree Indian from Saddle Lake Cree Nation in Treaty 6 territory here on Turtle Island and I say it's okay!
