Rhyl in 1960s/70s - home movie

The copyright in this video belongs to Mrs Gaynor Williams of the shop 'Aquarius', Market Street, Rhyl. It shows her children Gareth and/or Elizabeth in Rhyl at Royal Floral Hall, on the promenade, visiting Botanical Gardens, at Marine Lake Fun Fair, in Pentre Bach Model Village (West Parade), playing on the sands and roller skating on the prom. Then follow scenes of demolition in East Parade, Church Street and off High Street, to make way for the present shopping precinct The White Rose Centre. Finally some shots of alterations to Royal Alexandra Hospital and construction of Sun Centre which opened in 1980. Video edited by Colin Jones.

Where has this once lovely town gone to, where have all the nice people gone to, and more oddly, where has all those lovely hot summers we used to have gone?. I remember even in the early 90s the warm and hot summer days used to last almost from May right til the end of Sept. Now, even in April and May you'd be lucky to see one day that dosent require one to wear a coat and hat to go out. Springs and Summers these days are mostly cold, with the occasional warm to hot day, but that's about it.

As a Rhyl resident I would agree that the town still too many pubs, and it is unfortunate that the Welsh Government has seen fit to give financial support to re-opening of some of them. Current housing regeneration work in the Rhyl West may lead to less accommodation being available to agencies that have been dumping problematic people on us in recent years.

488scoboy - I'm reading a book about a seaside town called Bara Brith set in a nineteen sixties fairground. Seeing those gorgeous little austin cars makes me wonder if it is actually Rhyl? 'Little Austins' feature in it. Felix From The Ashes on Kindle.

The footage was not all shot in the same year. 1960s/70s is as precise as possible.

Wow its so amazing to see wat rhyl was like . I really whish it could be like that now. It looked brighter then than wat is dose now. Like the fair has gone so have the donkeys. all the old buildings that thy are knocking down and just leave them for years boarded up were buildings were. To be honest rhyl is looking a right mess now.
