Rhodes MK1 Stage vs. MK2 Stage vs. MK2 - Suitcase pre
I just got my suitcase preamp, so i thought it's time to share the sound differences with the world:) At the end of the clip I just couldn't resist to play around with the Vibrato of the Suitcase preamp...
The Stage MK1 & MK2 examples are amplified straight from the harp assembly through a FMR RNP preamp. No compression/EQ/FX added...

And what about YAMAHA CP-70/80?
We can never thank Harold Burroughs Rhodes enough, benefactor of humanity, great inventor and musician, for whom we owe this wonderful piano.
For me Mark ONE always and forever. So pure and honest and ringing and barking wihtout any glitter, and each note has its own little "errors" which make it so alive. And the resonating between the notes played which sadly no sample library has got catched well enough!
I would give up a testicle to be able to play like this, thanks for the video.

At the risk of sounding snide, just play it twice as much as you play with your balls ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
00:09 Rhodes MK1 Stage 01:38 Rhodes MK2 Stage 03:07 Rhodes MK2 Suitcase Preamp You're welcome!
I love the mellow sound of the passive stage pianos but you can really hear that "growl" wanting to come out in the active... beautiful
that preamp suitcase sounds amazing, it feels like walking in a dream
The Rhodes is still my favorite electric piano decades after it was created. It's dreamy tone is unique. Thanks for the love ❤️.
He flexes with the B3 in the background
they're all smooth as butter but that MK1 sound is just unbelievable.
Incredible playing man
when you forgot the point of watching the video because of your your amazing playing! I must say you have a great touch and feel, could listen to that all day...

Holy jeez the playing was killer! Who IS this guy?!? Also an excellent demonstration of the different characters of the Rhodes.
Man the stage piano with the preamp sounds beautiful thank you for sharing Andy
Great sounds .... and great playing 👍
Parabéns pelo empenho e dedicação! Sua performance é impecável, maravilhosa!!!!!!!!
Very nice playing my man!
Seems like Rhodes EP people all have great chops and taste! Wonderful demo, thanks. :)
Amazing sounds 😍
Beautiful playing!
never gets old love your freestyle player
The rodes piano is an amazing instrument, awesome played, thank you
Awesome playing! I like both of them. Recently bought a Casio Privia PX5S which reproduces perfectly the Mark I. Now about the Seventy Three Mark II, it has an incredible sound under the hands of Jeff Lorber.
I love your playing man.
Awesome demonstration! Thanks!
MK I all the way, has the most funk.
awesome playing!
That preamp sounds gooooooood
You are grooving nicely. I like the Mk.1 best.
All of these sound fantastic! Which feels the nicest though? Great playing. Thank you!
crazy good playing
Ok, your incredibly talented, please tell me how long youve been doing this. So i can sleep better knowing that not everyone else plays like a professional jazz musician in their pare time.

I love the Mark 1 sound, but the Mark 2 low frequency bark is really nice as well. As for the suitcase, there's something nice about having a stereo tremolo, can't put my finger on it :p

it makes it sound wider. the Rhodes fills in space so well. it's like a pad synth before pad synths existed
Really they are all great 👍🏻
Haha! Thanks for watching! I will shoot some new footage after the holidays:)
fantastic sound

not to mention this guy's AWESUM playing
Great playing
The MK2 Stage has a softer, less burpy tone than the MK1 IMO; 'refined' would probably be the best way to describe it. I still like the warmer tone of the old Suitcase preamp though. Either way, the Rhodes is an instrument that changed the music of at least three generations of musicians. Another level of deepness: It was the Rhodes piano that became the impetus for the Yamaha DX7 Electric Piano sound, another pianistic texture that changed at least two decades of music. Crazy how that works, ain't it?

Mark 1: Burpy in the lower register, barky in the middle, and bell-like in the higher range. It makes for a beautiful contrast, if you can use it well. Mark 2: More evened out and smoother, but still capable of those contrasts as well. I'm going to say that the technique of the player, and the individual piano make most of the difference.

It's interesting that you mention the Rhodes and the DX7. My keyboard rig in the late eighties was a MkII Rhodes Suitcase and a MkII DX7. I dragged that rig around the pubs of Sydney for most of the eighties and still have both sitting in my lounge room beside a custom-built acoustic piano built by a company in Sydney almost 51 years ago.
Damn, serious grooves!
Mark III with premap jam he does totally reminds of Billy Cobahm's keys guy Jan Hammer on Spectrum. Such a distinct sound. Such an incredibly talented keys player. That LP changed my life.
good lord :) what a great sound
I would love them all
I'm a little floored by how good the preamp sounds. I'm a Mk1 guy all the way because I love the rough fuzzy edges of the original in the midrange but that preamp is the definition of sonic butter.
Maravilhoso esse Mark 7! Igual ao vintage Fender Rhodes!!!👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Definitely the Mk1 although there were a number of changes to this instrument before it eventually became the Mk2. I recall my Mk1 as having particularly heavy action.
Amazing!
the beauty of the Mark 1.. Why can't I get rid of the onions!
I dig the triplet thing, gg
so nice
Really nice...
Always like the Rhodes playing on Jeff Beck's "Blow by Blow" album.
Both are smooth as silk so it's a tough choice
Heh.. Mooi dit! Bedankt man :-)

My first keyboard was a mark 2. Not much fun carrying it up a fire escape for a gig, but I did.
nothing like the real thing
All is the matter of voicing [defined by grommet height) + space between tine and pickup
DANKE !!!!!!!!!!!!

Did you make it in real time, or in diminished tempo ? And what method would you advice for practicing improvisation ?
Very Nice. Being old school, I much prefer the Mark 1 stage sound. The mark II is a little too bright for me, but that can be adjusted. The Janus preamp sounded nice, but then again, I prefer the older Peterson pre-amp. The vibrato is more sweeping rather than switching between the channels like the Janus. Have you recorded the Mark I with the stereo preamp?
Wow they sound amazing! What year is that MK1?
Hoi Pieter, thanks! Enjoy! Len
Damn bro. I can here some George Duke lines in there somewhere.
God Damn
With the pre it sounds larger than life.
Mark II for the win
Hi Contacto Acustica, off course I can:) Please tell me what you're looking for in a PM, I'll see if I can help you!
👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
vet!
There's no principal difference 'tween sound of Mark 1 and that of mark 2... As it must be... Suitcase sounds excellent!
What is the difference in sound between the Sparkle Top Rhodes and the MK1 Rhodes an Mk2?
That particular Rhodes Mk II sounds amazing, but in general Mk IIs suffer when compared to the Mk Is...
goot
That preamp really adds to the sound. Is it a Janus? Just enough to make the Rhodes a studio type sound with no external processing.
It is just the pre amp of a suitcase. It needs its own power supply.
I don't care whethter i buy a mk-1, mk-2. As long as it is a Rhodes, i am into synthesizers and all of them i programmed a couple of Fender rhodes sounds.

is there any sort of modification to get that pre on a mark 1?
I prefer 1.. it had a more even attack across the register. Mk2 was a little more farty in the low & chimey in the upper.
Mk 2 suitcase is the best , it has both sides, the badboy side and the warmth side.
Why aren't you world famous yet????

A good tuning goes a long way. Next, see if your hammer tips need replacing. if you have a suitcase. check and see if the speaker surrounds are rotten out and that all 4 of your speakers are working. if your hear a lot of hiss your capacitors may need replacing.
Am I becoming a Rhodes snob, or could actually hear the difference in a blind test? Not sure yet
anyone can tell all stuff he use and how he set up the rhodes ? he have a FMR RNP preamp and more ? suitcase pre amp ?
I just bought a Mark 1A, is there a way I can get mine to have that tremolo? Mine is the Fender Rhides with no preamp.

MK 2
name of the song 3:45 and 5:00 ?
Mk1 sounds sort of like a fender amp with the slight brittle high end whereas th 2 sounds like a Princeton, warmer but less character.
MK2 sounds more sparkly.
Can I get a suitcase pre built in to my mk2?
@lennartmusic

I've installed a complete original pre-amp rail which was on Ebay. You can also install a vintage vibe preamp which is already prepared for a stage model.
