Rhodes MK1 Stage vs. MK2 Stage vs. MK2 - Suitcase pre

Музыка

I just got my suitcase preamp, so i thought it's time to share the sound differences with the world:) At the end of the clip I just couldn't resist to play around with the Vibrato of the Suitcase preamp...
The Stage MK1 & MK2 examples are amplified straight from the harp assembly through a FMR RNP preamp. No compression/EQ/FX added...

    For me Mark ONE always and forever. So pure and honest and ringing and barking wihtout any glitter, and each note has its own little "errors" which make it so alive. And the resonating between the notes played which sadly no sample library has got catched well enough!

    The MK2 Stage has a softer, less burpy tone than the MK1 IMO; 'refined' would probably be the best way to describe it. I still like the warmer tone of the old Suitcase preamp though. Either way, the Rhodes is an instrument that changed the music of at least three generations of musicians. Another level of deepness: It was the Rhodes piano that became the impetus for the Yamaha DX7 Electric Piano sound, another pianistic texture that changed at least two decades of music. Crazy how that works, ain't it?

  • @funkmike

    @funkmike

    Mark 1: Burpy in the lower register, barky in the middle, and bell-like in the higher range. It makes for a beautiful contrast, if you can use it well. Mark 2: More evened out and smoother, but still capable of those contrasts as well. I'm going to say that the technique of the player, and the individual piano make most of the difference.

    It's interesting that you mention the Rhodes and the DX7. My keyboard rig in the late eighties was a MkII Rhodes Suitcase and a MkII DX7. I dragged that rig around the pubs of Sydney for most of the eighties and still have both sitting in my lounge room beside a custom-built acoustic piano built by a company in Sydney almost 51 years ago.

    Hoi Pim, het is de pre amp van een originele suitcase rhodes. Veergeet niet dat deze van oorsprong uit de cabinet gevoed werden, dus je hebt dan een losse voeding nodig. De pre amp heb ik kant en klaar via ebay kunnen krijgen, volgens mij heeft ep-service een eigen variant die ook heel geschikt is.

    Very Nice. Being old school, I much prefer the Mark 1 stage sound. The mark II is a little too bright for me, but that can be adjusted. The Janus preamp sounded nice, but then again, I prefer the older Peterson pre-amp. The vibrato is more sweeping rather than switching between the channels like the Janus. Have you recorded the Mark I with the stereo preamp?

    Hoi Pieter, thanks! Doorgaans heeft een MK2 een iets hardere sound. Maar de afstelling is ook zeer bepalend daarvoor. Let wel op dat er bij de MK2 ook types zijn met plastic toetsen, spelen minder fijn en leveren minder 'resale value'. Je SV1 speelt waarschijnlijk veel fijner als je de settings wat aanpast: minder laag op de eq, velocity op 7, galm een stuk minder... Enjoy! Len
