Rhino Rally Desert Race February 2024

Спорт

The Rhino Rally desert race in Warner Valley Utah is always one of the most popular races of the year. With a BLM imposed 300 max rider count (for big bikes), the event always sells out . The Rhino Rally uses a traditional hare and hound format with two separate loops although this year the course was a bit shorter and loop 2 was mostly a repeat of a shorter version of Loop 1.
This was my first race back since breaking my back last Fall. I decided to team race with my older brother since he was also returning from a year break due to injury. I rode Loop 1 and he rode Loop 2.
It felt great to get back on the bike and even though I was rusty, I still got just as much, if not more, joy from getting back on the bike and enjoying a fun course. Thanks to the Wizards MC for all of their work.

Nice riding! That was a lot of fun. After you got around me the last time in one of those washes, you just started to slowly pull away from me until I couldn't see you. Nice job!

I feel like it’s rare to see the 250s out there nowadays; I hope to ride half as fast as you one day! Ha

This looks like a blast! I live in Texas and we have nothing like that here. I race in a cross country club that has races on seven to eight mile loops, its fun but im always wanting to ride in other states like Utah! Were you able to practice this loop?

We're very fortunate to have more open space for longer courses, but unfortunately it's becoming more and more challenging for clubs to host races on public lands. We weren't able to practice the loop since that's not feasible given the length. However, this is an open public riding area so I've ridden most of the trails in the past.

Sweet! What do you have zip tied to your bar pad? I ride mostly woods/mountains . Do you make your forks fairly stiff for dez racing?

That is the transponder we were using for team racing. Rather than the standard sticker-type that you put on your helmet visor, team racing requires you to physically move the transponder from one bike to the other when you switch riders (assuming you're riding different bikes). My brother was riding his Beta on Loop 2 so when I came in from Loop 1 I pulled that off my bar pad and handed it to him. .

Great ride Mike! Lot of fun passing so many riders. How is Josh doing these days? So far as I checked doesn't look like he rode this one. All the best!

I had my two other sons with me but Josh was home taking care of his wife and newborn daughter. He wished he could have been with us but was obviously taking care of higher priorities 🙂

What happened to one start? Everyone goes together. Think maybe some experts are afraid of getting beat by a novice.🙄
