She's a national treasure.

I never heard of her and I don't want to speak negatively about her because it seems like she's trying to create music that is deeper and on emotional themes but I have to ask... Are the studio recordings better than this at least? It seems like she can sing but this live rendition is just not engaging in any way
She is easily my favorite current folk singer. I listen to her albums every week. Genius of banjo and arrangements. I love her religious songs and I'm an atheist. ❤❤❤❤❤❤ So glad she's getting this attention. Very much deserved.

Her voice reminds me a little bit of Nina Simone.

@@keyfiender799 she said she stylized this one with Nina in mind.
She has such a powerful voice.
Powerful and damning.
She is a shining light like nothing I've heard in twenty years.
Am I the only one who immediately envisioned the opening credits of the next 007 film? Great music and lyrics! Wow... and what a chilling performance... just fantastic!

I was thinking it sounded like the main track for a soundtrack to a movie… very cinemagraphic…
Thank you, Michael, for bringing Rhiannon to my attention. I can't believe I've never heard her before, and you can bet that I am doing a crash course into her work and sharing it with everyone I know!!!! Thanks again, Michael, you're killing it this week!!!!
Such a brilliant and moving performance. I have chills...
Listened to your interview on democracy now and had to come watch this performance! Goosebumps! 🔥
Sounds like a James Bond movie soundtrack.

That's called chromatic mediants, where the melody walks up two half-steps and back one, to create an air of mystery and tension.
whoaaa... what a performance... Rhiannon Giddens - continues - to amaze... wow...
Y'all check her out with the Carolina Chocolate Drops. I don't know if they are still together but I had the amazing opportunity to catch them at a small concert hall in North Florida a few times. Phenomenal performance and a great history lesson on the music origins and the instruments they played

I love the Carolina Chocolate Drops. Their blue grass that reminds me of my family.
Her decision to have her nephew, Demeanor, rap with her in live performances is genius. He is a talent in his own right, and this is one of the most powerful performances I have seen in a long time. Saw them perform last night at Stone Mountain Arts Center in Brownfield, ME. She is incredible. Her band is incredible.
Her body of work is truly incredible.
Powerful ❤❤❤❤❤
Just wow!!!!
She’s amazing
she's a tremendous playing several different instruments, too.
Incredible!
I'm not crying you're crying. Delta Blues FTW.

There was so much feeling within that song
A beautiful song telling an important American tragedy. Thank you for your contribution to the story

Very nice.
I cannot believe this is the same woman that performs the banjo on Texas Hold up with Beyonce‼️‼️😍💐🌺🌸🌸🌸😍😍

I love this song! Anyone else hear a bit of the Bond theme ?
first part of the song was hard to connect to since it seemed to be intentional dissonant... but when the second part started i cryed. well done

Dissonance is one of the most important qualities of music and you hear it everywhere. It simply causes tension, so a composer uses it like a painter uses color. That said, there is really no dissonance in the chords of this song, beyond what you get from any blues lick where a note is bent on guitar, & people generally connect to that quite well. There is chromatic mediants in the chord progression, like the 007 theme, but that's not dissonance. To each their own tho, that's why we have so much great music.

That was not what I was expecting. It was Billie Holiday like.
She's giving Shirley Bassey singing Strange Fruit by Billie Holiday-- a very talented young artist with a powerful presence and I can't wait to see what she does next!!!
Wowowowowow

Oooh, I see a girl who grew up listening to Portishead. I like it.

Knowing Rhiannon I highly doubt she has ever heard Portishead:). This song was written in the spirit of Nina Simone. Cool that people hear other things in it. There’s even a little Radiohead guitar quote in there;). Thanks for watching.

@@JeighNeither When you first learned Ukraine’s neoNazis started this war before Russia was ever there (Nov. 24th 2013) by starting violence at the Maidan, what were your thoughts? Oh, that part. Cause and effect flexing on you. Later, Ukraine's failed Donbas ethnic cleansing, with its government backed neonazis (to stop further democratic election attempts), led to Russia's Antifa denazification SMO. Oh, that part. More cause and effect flexing. To be clear, you are anti-democracy and pro-Ukronazi fascism.
