Rheinberger: Abendlied (Evening song)

Музыка

Abendlied by Josef Rheinberger
Sung by The Gesualdo Six
Audio by Josh Cooter
Now it’s your turn! For our first #singwithG6, we have chosen one of our favourite pieces, a sacred motet by Josef Rheinberger which the composer first penned in 1855 at the age of 15. It is perhaps his most famous choral work, which looks backward to the great sacred music of the Renaissance.
- - -
Bleib bei uns,
denn es will Abend werden,
und der Tag hat sich geneiget.
Bide with us,
for evening shadows darken,
and the day will soon be over.
Resta con noi,
poiché viene la sera,
e il giorno volge al termine.

Lovely ! As an amateur bass in a local choir, it was very instructive to read the music and sing-along with the bass. More like this please, as I would love to sing this kind of music, but I’m not good enough. How lucky you all are to sing at this quality !

They even have two bass voices. So whatever your vocal range, you can have it high or low. Pretty low, indeed. 🙂

I love this piece, and this version is very good - especially considering the parts had to be recorded separately and at different times. I definitely prefer it in the lower key as well, although I find it more commonly in a higher key - probably because of those D flats in the bass 2 part! I especially like the countertenor 2 singing here, I replayed it a few times just to hear his part - very good indeed, and of course the D flats in the bass 2 part were remarkable.

As a 2d bass who had no trouble with D-flats, I was impressed with how exquisitely they were negotiated here. A beautifully and sensitivity sung piece but that is, of course, to be expected from this excellent group. Thanks!

Have downloaded the score and have been singing along; top alto line at the moment. Going for the second alto as well :) This is brilliant thank you. Have so missed singing during the lock down so I'm searching for on line experiences. So far Opera North have come up trumps with a 4 week course via Zoom which has been most enjoyable. Looking forward to more :)

A nice rendition of course, but quite a few striking differences in pronunciation and the occasional vowels that don't match keep this from becoming one of my favourites.

Thanks for your feedback, Josse. It’s certainly an interesting process, recording in our separate homes and stitching together afterwards - not being able to work as an ensemble and shape words together. Live, in-person music making is definitely our preferred way of working!

@@thegesualdosix I find it remarkably well matched and blended, especially considering none of you are in the same room. Having directed and stitched together several of these myself (at a much more amateur level!) I know how difficult the process is. Having said that, you make it look and sound easy and I didn’t detect any major differences, but I’m not a German speaker!
