Ойындар
I know the rerelease is out there and I'm waiting for it. Nippon Ichi Software's first attempt at an RPG, with simple SRPG combat. How did they fare on the PS1 compared to their later PS2 output? Let's find out in this review of Rhapsody - A Musical Adventure

When I bought this game it came with a CD of all the songs. I used to fall asleep listening to it every night.
Honestly this was my first JRPG as a kid and it was a great intro to the genre.. especially for a 9/10 year old girl. 😅 I’ll always think of it fondly !
3:53 Classic burn :D Witch: "But there's one thing I cannot get..." Choir: "The lost youth..." Witch: "Shut up!"
Happy to see this game getting more love. One of the hidden gem jrpgs of the PS1 era. If you can get past the kawaii-ness, it's a really charming somewhat short jrpg with great characters and with a story that doesn't take itself too seriously.
Ah if there's english patches for the sequels I hope you cover them. This musical JRPG format sounds so unique that the charm alone kinda makes up for the flaws

Yes I'm surprised more developers haven't made musical RPGs. When I saw this I had to have it

The sequels are getting localized
Videos like this might not be good for the algorithm, but I do really love finding out about games I would never discover otherwise. I'm looking forward to picking it up when it releases on Steam! Anyways, thanks for the video, really enjoyed it!
I rented this game when I was a young one, and finished it over the course of a long weekend. I remember it fondly! It's very nice to see a video dedicated to it! ♥
I agree with this review 100. Other reviewers glossed over some of the flaws. I try to play games blind but switched to a guide at the end to save myself from the dungeons and figuring out which random NPCs I needed to talk to to progress the plot.
Wow im so happy that you were able to look into this game. Was tracking this game down for a bit and gave up after seeing the expensive price tag. But now that NIS is rereleasing this on Steam, Im looking forward to playing this wholesome and simple adventure.
I can see why Nippon Ichi Software wasn't as enthused about re-releasing La Pucelle and Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure.
The musical numbers are super cute! Had no idea about this game.
I’m really glad this is coming out on modern platforms, regardless of if the combat is bland or not. Thanks for another great vid btw.

Oh same. The game's a turning point in their history and deserves more availability. Though I do hope that maybe they'll consider rereleasing the later Marl Kingdom games that followed this one up, with a western release this time.

@@Aboveup We can only hope. I’m surprised nobody’s taken a crack at them yet aside from the web translation of 2 that has been floating around out there for a while. :)

STEAM is releasing it tonight/tomorrow - Aug 30,2022
You know, I'd never before subscribed after watching only one of a channel's videos, but you gave me enough quality insight into one of my favourite series that it made me really look forward for whatever else you put out there. Keep up the good work!
Great video yet again ❤️
So hype for the PC ports of old NIS games coming this year. Never got to play any of them before. Rhapsody has always been on my radar.
Omagad!!! At last this game got reviewed by an actual competent channel!!!!!!!!
I missed this game on ps1 when I was a child it would probably one of the best back then if I got the chance to play it
you are totally awesome dood!
Just pre ordered the collectors edition so excited to finally play this😊
Looks interesting. May play it one day. Looking forward to the next review.
Very thorough review! Re: the JP voice option I even remember when La Pucelle came out years later being highly surprised the game had JP voices in it.
Read about this game on the Bitmap Books JRPG book, just had to see it for myself. Very cool!
Wait a sec...the big bad has jiggle physics 😂
a classic, never finished, but the main song still can water me up and make me rember at this sweet lil story and other fantasys
I want more games that try taking the form of a musical, the only other legitimate attempt I think of being Rhythm Doctor with a premise so good it might as well be turned into an actual musical along with Heartbeat being an absolutely perfect song
I love so much this game. Nostalgic
Nice vid
Thank you song means a lot to me
Didn't know the DS game was a port

It kind of is. They changed a lot of the core gameplay loop like going from grid based tactics to a turn based battle system. It’s similar to calling FF7 Remake a “port” just because it has the same characters, settings, etc
2 and 3 are coming to the west now lol. Will you cover them?
Rhapsody is one of my all time favorite RPGs, but certainly not for the gameplay. I was sold on it due to the art and the dual language option which was indeed rare. Beat the game on a rental but still bought it because it was under $30. I remember it getting BLASTED in reviews though. 1 out of 10 across the board with nearly every reviewer complaining about it being "Just a gender swapped Cinderella" (no it's more Sleeping Beauty) and about how awful the dubbed music was while NEVER mentioning the ability to choose the musical language despite that being a major feature advertised on the box and website (Atlus put up Evil Queen in both languages on their site to promote this feature). I remember a preview in Official PlayStation Magazine for Disgaea which actually read "It's from the people who made Rhapsody so it's probably crap", which is shocking for a Preview since those usually hype the crap out of a game. The backlash for the game was so bad, Atlus refused to translate anything else too close to Rhapsody. People actually asked them for La Pucelle and they said no because Rhapsody sold so poorly. Mastiff had to translate La Pucelle. A darn shame because I really wanna know what happens in the Rhapsody series. I prefer the art, design, and setting here over Disgaea and REALLY wanna know what happened between Nippon Ichi and the Rhapsody artist considering their art was replaced in the DS version of the game. That said, I clearly need to replay this game as I never noticed what you said about the towns and sidequests. My takeaway was that this game was a beautiful cliche storm. It's basically what would happen if you made a Disney Princess movie into a JRPG. It has all the Disney Princess cliches AND all the JRPG cliches all at once and the weird way they blend made the game an absolute delight. As for Atlus' translations? Yeah they were in a weird place at the time because for a minute they actually tried to COPY Working Designs. Thousand Arms specifically has a Working Designs-style translators notes in the back of the instruction book. Though even as a kid I was pretty -_- towards the "This is what happens when you do a literal translation" line. They gained a lot of respect from me due to how they handled Disgaea with the dual audio option, but recently replaying Code of Princess now with Japanese voices suddenly dropped my opinion of them again due to some liberties they took with that script. Sadly I'd still probably consider them one of the better translation groups below XSEED which I think is my personal favorite? Or at least WAS. Their handling of Rune Factory 5 has left me sour.
Ah, ps1 era atlus usa. Never not finding a way to let you down. I think their localization efforts only being to pay off with Nocturne.
This game is both a cute game and soundtrack
Bruh so much nostalgic i remember crying in that fairy was her mom BROOOOO!!! also, u need to get the Spawn soul in her mailbox XD
Yay
Wouldn't be awesome to have a musical RPG on modern systems so they can do choreography and everything? I've been wanting that for a long time
They just announced the sequel for the west😍
NIS rules
Strategy RPG without the strategy haha 😂 Looks like a fun story though!
Both Rhapsody and its sequel are available on the Japanese PS3 Store for 6 to 7 dollars. The first game is known as The adventure of Puppet Princess in japanese and the sequel is known as Little Princess: Marl Ōkoku no Ningyō Hime 2.
I remember this game getting lampooned by Xplay back in the day.
One thing I will say though. The game has very beautiful 2d graphics....something I miss in a lot of modern games today. Games like this, Valkyrie Profile and Suikoden 1+2 for example.
FYI: it's "yea or nay," not "yay or nay." I know it's pronounced "yay," but it's spelled "yea." Also, boooo to calling Atlus' translation of this bad on any level! This is one of my favorite localizations of all time. Atlus did a bang-up job, and even though they did insert some stuff here and there, they did so entirely in keeping with the spirit and tone of the original Japanese, so I think it was all completely justified and worked perfectly. If anything, I think this localization was ahead of its time!
Waiting for Ys remakes from taito
