3:33 The white hart is by far my favourite Rhaenyra moment of the entire season. See, Viserys has his stag captured by others and dragged to him, he barely has any control over the situation and simply has to act how he is bade because that’s how he feels as king. He feared Balerion because dragons symbolise power and, at his core, Viserys is a man afraid of power thrust into a position he was not ready for. And even at the one task he was meant to do, he screws it up and needs two thrusts to kill the stag. It wasn’t quite as miserable a performance as Theon’s butchery of Rodrick Cassel’s death in S2 of GOT, but you can clearly see that he does not feel comfortable with the role he’s been thrust into by his society. This is emphasised even more by the fact that everyone around him claps for him, as if to reassure him that he did the right thing when everyone knows that it was wrong to watch, much like Viserys’ reign. And even then, the colour of the stag is important as Viserys was promised a white stag much like a young Viserys was promised a great reign like his grandfather Jaehaerys, but the reality was much more disappointing. The stag was not weak, but it was not exceptional either. Rhaenyra, by contrast, is the one who witnessed the white stag, the symbol of royalty, and what’s more important is that she saw it alone, only she and Criston know that it was there because that’s so informative of her character. Despite no one believing in her, as they wouldn’t believe her if she claimed she saw the stag, she doesn’t need them to know. The portent of this symbol was meant for her and her alone, as it was to reassure her that she has the future and it doesn’t matter if everyone knows it or not. Likewise, the fact that she chose to let the stag go is so important because she rejected the role that her society would have imposed upon her, she chose a different path and chose a different way than what had been imposed on Viserys with everyone watching him. This scene was laid with so much important symbolism that has already shaped so much of how Rhaenyra sees herself in contrast to her forebears and will continue to shape the rest of her actions in the Dance.

And that stag flees north where it will not be hunted, somehow making it across the wall, and once there it finds freedom from being hunted because it's white body is the perfect camouflage north of the wall. It then takes a mate and has many descendants, until the day comes when it's last living descendant is captured and killed by the Nightking, becoming his steed. And from it's back he slaughters thousands of innocents, he even has the white stag gore people to death with his antlers. And when he takes Viserion as his new mount the stag goes to his general who uses it to massecur the Karstarks and all the people in their castle. This will go on until the Nightking's death. And so, perhaps, hundreds of thousands of innocent people are killed, maimed, zombified, crippled, and orphaned, all because Rhaenerya chose to defy tradition and let the stag live.

This is beautiful and a classy compilation.

I’m a staunch Green but there’s no doubt that Rhaenyra is a powerful, complex, layered and flawed but admirable character who is worthy of the respect she’s claimed. And even though I think the show still didn’t show enough of the pre-Dance period, that they managed to make you feel as though you’ve been on a lifelong journey with these characters is nothing short of an incredible feat to accomplish with the limited time they had to do it. She has truly earnt her role as the Black Queen. 🖤 (Even though her faction is never actually named in the show but I digress 😂)
