I think you went way too hard on this thing, to me it seems like they just wanted to create a budget option that's similar to their existing handhelds but much cheaper. You just decided that it was trying to be a mini device and then bash it for not being the form factor of a mini device. I can absolutely see someone wanting something bigger in the hands with a bigger screen than a mini handheld but not wanting to spend 90 dollars, and this seems like a pretty good purchase on that front. Not to mention it looks good for gift-giving.

Russ you completly miss the point, you're blinded by your hate of Anbernic. The RG3XX is NOT mini, most of us DON'T WANT mini because we don't have mini hands, and we want the bigger 3"5 screen. The only mini thing we want is price, and RG3XX has it.

Yeah I don't know why he was so hell bent on this thing being mini, I like that it's bigger He was literally saying this thing is trying to be mini and then saying this thing is way to big to be mini back to back, like yeah the thing isn't mini lol
Had mine for 4 days. Out of the box it was ok, my build quality was fantastic if I am honest and the display is fantastic. Ambernic updated the firmware to add some improvements but the game changer here was the development of Garlic OS. Once installed it transforms the RG35xx to a totally different level bringing the device to not just beginners but avid retro gamers wanting a low cost gameboy colour sized device. I'm pretty sure Ambernic never marketed this as a "mini" device. It's way more comfy to play than the ever popular Miyoo & the larger screen is a welcome addition.

@@RetroDodo So Onion OS isn't a community made OS intended to make the Miyoo better? It is the exact same process the Myoo went through but far quicker. You can't call out Ambernic without also calling out the Miyoo Mini that did exactly the same thing after launching with a very basic firmware. He had Garlic up & running in a few days and 4 days before your review.

@@RetroDodo to be fair, any Linux device is crap on OFW. Miyoo OS is horrid, can't even imagine using my RG503 without Arkos, same with all RK3326 before that... Unless it's a x86 or Android device, CFW is almost always mandatory
RG35xx is almost considered a social phenomenon here in the Philippines. Both small and big sized gaming retailers here are selling the handheld and it always gets sold out. This has never happened ever in our country for a retro handheld device. Influencers and celebrities are even buying this product. 100+ small businesses started because of RG35xx. RG35xx is the greatest non-Sony and non-Nintendo handheld to ever grace the market. While it did say that this product is mediocre, it doesn't almost matter. What matters is the usability, the price, and the value. RG35xx is the greatest thus far in value.

I'm European and I came to the Philippines for a vacation and picked up this handheld. It seems awesome and I couldn't find anything like it back home, only the extremely cheap devices that only emulate NES. This is a great device that you can use out of the box, the reviewer is way too demanding. If you're looking just to casually play some retro games, this is perfect and has no faults.
I like the size of this, and honestly this system is a dream come true for millennials that grew up with original Game boy. I'm in my 30s now, but having a system that can play every single game from my childhood on a handheld device that looks similar to a Gameboy for less than the price of what the original Gameboy used to cost is really amazing to me. As a child I couldn't even fathom such a thing.
Dude in my opinion the miyoo mini is too small for me. I'll go with the RG35xx any day, and now even more with the Garlic OS
At this price point it seems like an excellent alternative to the Miyoo Mini. I've relatively large hands, so while I love looking at the Miyoo Mini, I'd never actually get one myself as it's just to small for me personally. The RG35XX seems like the perfect compromise. Not to small, but also not overly large. The Gameboy Color is one of my absolute fav handhelds ever, also because of it's perfect size, that's what the RG35XX reminds me off.

I’m new to retro gaming and got this one and absolutely love it. The classic color scheme feels and looks way better than I expected. To be it’s a great size for playing extensive hours and I have pretty large hands. Right now I’m using the stock ui bcs I don’t know how to download garlic os but so far it’s fantastic.
Does it have an internal clock? I play Pokemon Unbound and I need a handheld that can track time.
Hey Brandon I wanted to ask you something, I have been thinking of buying a retro handheld but I'm not sure which one is the best option with the new release of the new rg353m from ambernic and the existence of the retroid pocket 2 plus I've been stumped which one do you think is more worth it?
Question: Is disc swapping on ps1 an option with the built in software? Like for example in FFVIII, can i change discs when needed?
My friend just got his yesterday and brought it to work today and i can tell you that it is small. Now I've never seen or held a miyoo mini but this thing is awesome. I played with it for a bit and for a person who doesn't play all the time this things feels great and plays great. No complaints.
Garlic Os seems to replace directly the original firmware/os! Today I'll receive it from Ali! Thanks Retro Dodo and "Happy New Year"

@@jc7150 I'd highly recommend the Anbernic RG353M. Metal, great controls, good screen, easy to add games, etc For extra power, the retroid pocket 3+. Controls and build aren't as good, but it can play some GameCube and PS2. If you own a PS5 or have GamePass/GeForce NOW, get the Logitech G Cloud. Big 1080p screen, great build quality, feels super comfortable to hold, can stream straight from PS5 easily, can utilize other streaming services (GamePass is limited to 720p), Android emulators that run up to GameCube and PS2, and 12-15hr battery life. You can get it for $250 from Logitech with coupons. Razer is also releasing the Razer Edge this month. I expect it to emulate up to Switch games. It also has a high res AMOLED screen. But it's $400 and I don't love the design.

Great review! Only (in my eyes very important) point I was missing is the wrong aspect ratio on many systems on the stock OS which also can't be changed via settings. All systems be it GB(C) that are normally 10:9 or GBA that is normally 3:2 are displayed stretched to 4:3.
I have been following you for awhile and I bought a few handhelds because of your videos I wanted advice on how to install the rom coms I think thT is how is called for one of the handhelds
Can anyone recommend a good retro handheld like this that can run some wrestling games? I know steamdeck and obviously the higher priced ones might be able to. But I’m talking about the $75-170 range. And I don’t care if they’re the off the wall wrestling games like that Wrestlemania Game I think it was for SNES or the Genesis that was like Mortal Kombat Meets WWF or that In Your House for PS1 I think it was. Or even something like that fighting game for SNES I think was called Ultimate Fighter where it was a 16 Bit competition like Fighting game where you could play as a karate guy, Japanese karate fighter, pro wrestler etc.
How u play duck hunt. On here. Without light gun
Anbernic needs to spend more time perfecting their designs and establishing good base firmware. If they weren't greedy and payed OS devs, they'd actually get WAY more sales through word of mouth.
I'm honestly curious as to the pre-installed games included here

This is the device you get when you realize that the Myioo Mini is not going to come back and you can't get one for an acceptable price. I have to say that installing a new OS is not hard at all. You can install Garlic OS in a couple of hours. Regarding the Power available, besides running upscalled PS1 games flawlessly, the GPU was unlocked recently (it wasn't even using the GPU. Just software emulation) and you can "run" Mario 64 on it (not very well though... Yet). You can add controlers via USB and with a dongle you can add controllers via bluetooth. Overall, I am quite impressed with it and playing through a few games atm. Both GBA and PS1. Those consoles have some amazing bangers. Just an FYI, for 55 bucks you are getting PS Vita levels of hardware. Makes you wonder...

Time to revisit this review now that Garlic OS comes standard on the device. I'm not beginner, and this is a great device to tuck into my work bag to steal away a few minutes between meetings. I think it's a great little device that makes a great complement to more powerful (but less pocketable) devices like the Steam Deck or any of the chunky handheld PCs.
Something I’d like to recommend, is if you think something is better, recommend what you would get instead. If not, just the general next upgrade so people can go look at reviews for it as well. Just friendly advice :)

This device seems to sit squarely above the Pow Kitty ultra budget devices. I have tried to find retro handhelds for friends and family that don't typically use these devices but just have some nostalgia for a few games. I don't want to spend a lot of money, but I want it to be easy for them to understand if they don't have an inclination to tinker. The Pow Kitty devices have too many catches whenever it comes to saving games and order of operations for turning off the device that might break their system. Even with a custom OS the Pow Kitty devices I think don't check all the boxes, and this device seems to do so. I think you're right on the nose when you say this is great for beginners, and that's exactly what I want this device for. Thanks for your time and effort in making these videos.
