The turbo charged F1 cars of the 1980s were just crazy.
The engine of this Brabham is a 1.5L BMW Inline 4 with 191hp. So far so family sedan. But it has a turbo charger, producing a boost of up to 5 bars in quali trim, allowing the engine to produce 1400hp. Now the turbo lag is so big, that the turbo starts making a difference at around 10,000 of the 11,500 rpm limit. Meaning for most of the rev range, the engine does nothing, before it kicks into hyper drive.
Macau is a historic street track, but mostly known for Grand Touring car, Touring car, F3 and motor bike racing. This car never raced at this track, but it still makes for a great challenge. And surprisingly the BT55 does not run out of steering lock at the Melco hairpin, which is infamous for that.
The lap record is 2:12.651, set by Mick Schumacher in a F3. My time was a 2:08.621, which is not that impressive. But consider, that the F3 has a good amount more power then the BT55, till the Boost kicks in, which you can not capitalize as much on a such twisty circuit. Also the understeer in the BT55 is massive.
