We were in Iceland 2 weeks ago and did the food walk. It was amazing. We got to sample some wonderful food and see quite a bit of Reykjavik at the same time. I will add that the fermented shark is definitely an acquired taste!! I would highly recommend the food walk if visiting Iceland, it was super fun. 🇮🇸👏🏻👍😀

I did this tour last July and it was WONDERFUL! Like you suggested, I did it on my first evening to 1) force myself not go to bed even though I was jet-lagged and 2) get my bearings of the city while also gathering ideas on where to eat over the next few days. I was traveling solo but everyone was great and very friendly; most couples split up at each restaurant to meet the other people on the tour, which was great. Big shout to our guide Güdny and the other girl (whose name escapes me) she was training! They were also very accommodating when my departure flight was canceled last-minute and I had to push my tour back by a day.

Jeannie - my wife and I spent a week in Iceland in 2019. The airline lost our luggage but after watching your videos beforehand we were still able to have a great time with all that research. Your channel is a must for Iceland travel!! Wishing you the best

Visited 2022 April - the best food I've ever had in my entire life!!! This includes both the higher-end eateries such as Apotek or Duck & Rose as well as the traditional Icelandic food at Cafe Loki near the church. Cheers from LaLa Land, California.

We did this food tour a few months ago and it was a definite highlight! Perfect for the day of arrival as there is enough food for lunch and dinner. Messinn was our favorite spot, but everything was excellent! We actually went back to Messinn on our last night as we were still dreaming of their food!

I did this tour when I was there in sept. It was amazing... I loved it.

Jeannie, I used to eat regularly at Ostabúðin while I was in Reykjavik, partly because it was close to the apartment my company rented for me each winter but mainly because the food was absolutely delicious. Some of my students introduced me to the place as they cooked reasonably priced (for Reykjavik) catch-of-the-day each lunchtime. This was where I was introduced to arctic char and I spent many happy evenings enjoying that. 😋 So glad I was on expenses while I was there. 😉 I always thought it strange to eat in a fish restaurant whose name translates as Cheese Shop though. I haven't been back to Iceland in a few years and I'm very sad to see that Ostabúðin has now closed down.

Such great memories! My absolute favorite stop is Cafe Loki, and yes, who’d a thought rye bread ice cream would be SO good!

Hello Jeannie, After seeing this video I dicided to include it to my itinary. Great way to experience Icelandic cuisine with a bit of history. I had a great time !

We went to Iceland in October 2021 for 9 days. We loved Cafe Loki so much we went there twice. Yes, the mural and the view are spectacular. Rye bread ice cream SOUNDS weird, but it was so delicious. 😉

We did the food tour 2 years ago.. it was like $98 I think.. we did a similar local foods tour in Bogota Columbia... was like $22. About the same amount of stops/food samples. Incredible the price differences. Both had their charm though.

I flew into KEF this morning, and based on this video, I was able to book this tour for 3 pm. After a quick nap I walked from my hotel along the boardwalk to the Harpa Concert Hall where a group of 12 people were taken on tour by the effervescent Jenny. We had a wonderful experience, fermented shark and all! We visited all these places except Sjavargrillid. The weather right now is bright and sunny, making for a perfect first day in Iceland! Thank you Jenny, and thank you Jeannie for recommending this excellent tour!

Yay I’m so glad to hear that! Tipping is not part of the Icelandic culture but on tours it’s totally up to you - I’m sure they wouldn’t turn it down :)

When we were there in Iceland last year we tried quite a few restaurants. From high end to hole in the wall and everything in between, and we couldn't find anything less than wonderful. Icelanders take food seriously! Don't be fooled by the reputation for food being experience there, I didn't find it to be much more than what I am used to here is the Southeastern US.

We participated in a food walk just 4 weeks ago. Absolutely amazing, and an excellent guide. Hákarl wasn't bad, I actually went for seconds. And thirds 😁

I am enjoying your videos so much. I'm due to visit Reykjavik shortly and wondered if you have time to do a quick vid about Vegan eating in the city? From my research I think I may struggle somewhat ;)

Mama Reykjavík, on the corner of Laugavegur and the Rainbow street is a solid vegan choice. Good prices and big plates of very tasty food.

I was in Iceland in November of 2022 and I made sure that I got to Cafe Loki because of this video! It was early morning on the day we left but I was determined to get that rye bread ice cream! It did not disappoint and I would love to have another cup! Thank you for your videos. It made my trip so much more special knowing what to expect and where to go. We even bought the crampons that you suggested. Just before Cafe Loki I went to the Handknitting Association and custom ordered a lopapeysa. They were so low on stock and even on yarn that it was the only way to get what I really wanted. Its beautiful, warm and a cozy reminder of a magical trip that I would love to take again!

I was able to pick color from what they had and I asked that it be longer. It was no problem and exactly one month from the date of order it was in my hands. I was very impressed! You are so lucky to live in such a beautiful place. I could totally see myself living there and being content!

All the food looked gorgeous :) I've had shark before and I liked it but it wasn't fermented, not sure I'm brave enough for the fermented taste.

Goofy question. Do locals eat the fermented shark? Is it a delicacy? Im definitely won't eat it when I go if the locals don't. Sounds like a tourist trap.

Methyl-mercury - Many people know the health risks and presence of mercury found in seafood but this more toxic compound is caused when mercury binds with organic molecules in the environment. Sharks have been found to contain the highest concentrations of methyl-mercury than any other seafood due to bioaccumulation and their place at the top of the food chain. Cooking does not eliminate mercury. Health effects on humans - methyl-mercury is one of the most dangerous poisons for a human and can cause loss of motor control, corrosion of skin and mucous membranes, blindness, deafness, impotence, sterility as well as being linked to Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s. A study from the German University in Mainz revealed a dangerous amount of methyl-mercury in blue shark steak, showing that a person weighing 155lbs eating a normal portion could be getting 50 times the legal amount. BMAA - A neurotoxin that has been found in the flesh, cartilage and organs of sharks. Health effects on humans - Linked to neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. Ciguatera - The most common type of seafood poisoning, although many cases are unreported or misdiagnosed. The toxins originate from a type of micro-organism which attaches to a species of algae on dead or damaged coral. As coral damage is increasing so is ciguatera outbreaks. Health effects on humans - Typical food poisoning symptoms but can also be fatal. In Australia, almost all ciguatera poisoning has occurred from fish caught in Queensland or the Northern Territory. DDT - A synthetic and toxic pesticide that is banned for agricultural use but is still used in certain parts of the world. Sharks are highly exposed to these toxic compounds. Health effects on humans - Dizziness, convulsions and irritability with long-term exposure leading to lasting cognitive and neurological problems. As well as this, pregnant women exposed to DDT are more likely to have premature babies. PCBs - Have been widely used as they are very stable and don’t degrade quickly. Though they were banned in the 1970s due to their high toxicity, they still exist in the environment today and have been found in shark meat and oils. Health effects on humans - PCBs can cause liver disease and a reduced immune response. Women exposed to PCBs during pregnancy tend to have babies with a variety of problems and children exposed to these chemicals have suffered with their development. PCBs also alter estrogen levels in the body and can contribute to reproduction problems. ​@@cavscout1418 Icelander here: The locals who eat it regularly are almost all of the older generation, I've not met anyone my age who would buy it as a snack. I've had many times and I don't think it's particularly special, but I would say trying it once is part of the experience.

What is the price of this tour please and do they cater for nut allergys also cant have prawns or shrimp. the artic char looks and sounds lovely,could they do that dish with out the almounds

We tried the fermented shark at Grillmarkaðurinn and thought it was revolting, puffin we really enjoyed though.

My wife and I have been to Messinn twice on trips to Iceland. Both times we got in without reservations, although it was before 6pm. The restaurant was filling up by the time we left. Also, the location has gained in popularity, even opening a second location in Selfoss, so walking in without a reservation may be more difficult now. As for the food, the arctic char is as good as advertised. A second fish on their menu which doesn't get much mention but I think is quite good is the wolffish. Don't be dissuaded by its name or appearance, the wolffish has a surprisingly delicate taste! Just one comment about the Food Tour: This video gives the impression that an enormous amount of food is consumed on this tour. Surely the restaurants are serving smaller portions? If not, I don't think I'd be eating again for a week!

We did this food tour & we did a similar food tour in Bogota Columbia. Different foods of course.. both good.. Iceland = Expen$ive.. Colombia = Cheap. Colombia' tour was $80 cheaper PER PERSON. Both were good.. just sayin such a wild difference

The food and drink tour was AWESOME! One to two drinks at each of the five stops. We only had 4 guests on our tour and our tour guide invited us all to his 28th birthday party at a private room in some back-alley bar with free-flowing beer. Started off two weeks in Iceland with a bit of a hangover, LOL.

I’m vegetarian, would I starve?

We visited Reykjavik on a Sunday (free parking on Sundays) and we parked our car at the parking lot which is right across the road from Harpa. If you don't like to park on the streets then there's a lot of parking houses, I'd go to Hverfisgata 20 (Traðarkot Parking House).

They have parking garages that are pretty convenient. I don't know the exact locations, but we just googled them.

I get my hotdogs at the mall. No tourist line and same folks.
