The actual music video for this song had Bowie in three different drag guises and it still wasn't near as gay as this.

5/29/1985 airdate, a CBS special called How to Be a Man, as per a web search. THis was about six months after Captain Kangaroo ended its long CBS run.

I’ve never seen anything so “ambiguously” gay that wasn’t a comedy sketch. The “what the F is happening” look on the nameless, voiceless “wife” straight from central casting as she watches Rex Smith skip off to Bob Fosse’s Porkchop Hill sums it all up.

Bowie's song had serious gay undertones ("other boys check you out"). Rex's version brought that to life.

The song is called "Boys Keep Swinging". Bowie would be appalled!! (As I am after watching... whatever the heck THIS was!!)

@@jamesaitken5653 I agree, if you know what Bowie's personality was like, you'd know he literally would've positively adored every moment of this video, especially the homoeroticisms that Rex is playfully exaggerating. (I mean, come on! Bowie's OWN video of this song features Bowie in drag, and Bowie's 1980 Floor Show featured a gay male modern dance troupe.)

Why would Bowie be appalled? He appears in drag in the video of his version. So, there's no difference with Rex Smith making a gay song even gayer!

From the New York Times archive: 'HOW TO BE A MAN,' SPECIAL ON CBS TONIGHT By Richard F. Shepard May 29, 1985 IF there's some message buried in ''How to Be a Man,'' the special dedicated to the male of the species on CBS-TV tonight at 8 o'clock, it must be nothing deeper than a memo to let you know that Father's Day is coming up soon. It is a harmless one-hour music-cum-skit entertainment that is out to please and succeeds in carving for itself a niche between mildly amusing and silly. There are some nice things about this sleekly produced program, and one of them is the presence of Bob Keeshan, a k a Captain Kangaroo, as a host and star in his first television show for grown-ups. Those who spent their tender years growing up with the Captain will be pleased to see he is as gentle and charming a man among the adults as he is in the midst of toddlers. Mr. Keeshan gives us a believable anchorage with his little soliloquys on men and women, how the new woman has created a new man. It is not exactly a battle of the sexes a la Thurber, but it sets a tone for a show designed to be lighthearted, even though parts of it come across more heavily than others. John Denver, who sings and acts, is also on the credit side of the ledger, and the others who sing and act, among them Rex Smith, Hal Linden, Susan Anton, Melba Moore, Howard Hesseman and several very nice children, contribute to the overall theme that contrasts macho and quiche. The writing, by Bruce Hart, Carol Hart, David Axelrod, Jonathan Day, Leslie Fuller, Sean Kelly, Harold Kimmel and Larry Levin, as directed by Robert Nigro (Jim Hirschfeld is producer), has several bright spots that emerge from the somewhat mawkish terrain. One little tickler has a young man asking the woman he loves to be his second wife because half of all first marriages end in divorce. Another has a New York Giants player leaving his baby with the coach as he goes onto the field. There is a nice cartoon that runs through the show, one that depicts a little boy trying to find out what being a man involves and constantly finding instead violence behind the door marked ''men.'' www.nytimes.com/1985/05/29/arts/how-to-be-a-man-special-on-cbs-tonight.html

GET OVER IT, PEOPLE! It's Rex Smith, for Pete's sake! He has alway had a HUGE homoerotic appeal & a huge gay fan base. There were the rumors that he so much enjoyed pulling out his oversized rubber parts and put them on display for anyone, anytime, anywhere. And, he loved having his huge instrument tuned by anyone who wanted to battle the kraken! Personally, I wouldn't have kicked him out of my bed anytime soon!
