Rewriting The Force Awakens (and fixing the Sequel Trilogy)

Did you find the Disney version disappointing? This rewrite uses Disney's version as a basic template to work from, but makes some key changes to allow for more engaging worldbuilding and more complete character arcs. This will set things up for Episode VIII, which I'll hopefully be uploading in a few weeks.

The original trilogy saw people fighting to regain freedom and democracy. The prequels showed us how easy it was to lose a democracy. The sequels should have been about how hard it is to keep a democracy on track

The film never gave me that impression when I first saw it. The TLJ implied that Luke was still content on doing nothing after learning about his friend’s death until Rey shamed him for it and scorned him for attempting to kill his nephew. It’s also possible that Leia’s distress on the Battle of Crait may have played a role in his decision to intervene through the force but the film doesn’t really make that clear.

To be honest you fix a lot of issues that Rey had in the early parts of the film by simply including in tidbits like she had been helping with the repairs of the Falcon, which would have explained why she knew where to look to deal with the issues they had in the original episode 7, and explain her piloting the thing by having the comment of she had flow it before to help with moving cargo. Nerfing her blaster skill down to normal levels also helps ground her out. If she was not going to become a Jedi she would have had all the skills necessary to grow into the Han Solo role with all those skills being setup by throw away lines to fill out her backstory. At this point you cannot even call her a Mary Sue, because she had as much backstory as Luke had at that point in his movie. Even having her have some talent with a lightsaber but needing someone to teach her to actually be good also does a ton to ground her. The foundation of Star Wars is in that you need to train to become truly strong.

@@Vrex360 In Episode 7 she admitted to not knowing what she was doing when she flew the Falcon perfectly through the equivalent of a episode 6 death star run and gave Finn, in a jammed stationary turret, a perfect shot to take down the chasing Tie. Even Anakin in Episode 1 had a scene of being taught the controls, was already a pre-established vehicle pilot who was passively using the force to improve his reflexes, and had R2D2 doing the heavy lifting in keeping the fighter in the air in his first battle scene at the climax of the film. Unlike Rey who did her wreckage run in the Falcon (a ship notorious for needing 2 pilots to be flown effectively) at the start of her film. She also had been shown to know how to take apart craft, not fix them, as she is a salvager and even her "repairs" had left Han Solo with a look of total bafflement. When it came to her blaster skills, she missed once in all 3 movies combined. The very first time she pulled the trigger after getting the thing and not knowing how to shoot it, every time after that she had better accuracy than John Wick and other gun kata focused action movie protagonists. When it comes to her lightsaber skills? What she displayed was not simply talent, she had never held a lightsaber before and yet she still beat the shit out of Kylo who had been training most of his life. Her foundation is one who does not need training to do anything. She just does everything.

I also think having Luke be gone and the Jedi be a myth is kinda... overdone? I think the story would be much more engaging if Luke's new Jedi Order had been a success and there's plenty of ways to do that without it being a copy of the already existing one from the Prequels. Many of the ways the Order works could come from lessons Luke has learned throughout the original trilogy.

If you want a good example of a sequel trilogy done right, read Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising, and The Last Command. The remnants of the Empire are on the back foot, but still fighting to regain control, Luke is figuring out how to move forward as a Jedi, and the New Republic are struggling to keep their new government from shaking itself apart. It's a classic "We won. Now what?" story.

Very cool rewrite! I truly hope the algorithm can pick up and really boost your video, right now it has WAY too few views. To me, the most interesting aspect of a rewrite of the SW sequels is how much can be done by keeping most aspects of the characters and even many plot points the same. Your rewrite could probably be shot with the exact same movie sets as Disney's and while many vfx shots would be different it could "just" be changing from one ship to another.

Anakin in episode 1 has worked with droids and spaceships too. infact he knows enough about them to use starship parts to build and pilot his own pod racer. watto clearly offers starship repairs as well. so him knowing things about how to fly, plus the fact that his potential force powers vastly outrank everyone elses makes it a lot more plausible for him to be a good pilot than Rey. and Luke actually flew an armed spacecraft before.

There's not much more we needed to know about him for him to serve the story (Plus, he got way more fleshed out in the Prequels). Meanwhile, when we're trying to establish who Rey is as a character, and what she can do, it's pretty important to actually give the audience something that shows what she can and can't do. Preferably, this would be by showing us, but if it's something the characters mention in conversation, that can work as well. Rey is shown to be a proficiant pilot in TFA, and yet we never get any explanation as to how she's a proficient pilot. Even her just mentioning that she found and old flight simulator and practiced on it would've worked. But they didn't do that, so we as the audience don't know how she can fly so well. That's bad storytelling.

I wouldn't have Kylo unmask himself at all until his final interaction with han. Make it be they heard a student named Kylo killed their son Ben solo. Have it like han wants revenge on Kylo. But have the plot twist be shown at the end of the film where Kylo unmasks himself showing han, Ben isn't dead but Kylo still kills han.

cool stuf, dood… this _might_ be the best sequel re-write I’ve seen! I like that it uses the the basic framework of the actual movies, but tries to improve them, not just starting over from scratch. these changes are much more minor, but I’ve always thought Poe should’ve died in the crash, as was apparently originally written, to give Finn some shoes to fill… or alternatively, what if Poe was Kylo’s brother, and is killed by Kylo in some situation as Finn and/or Rey escape his clutches? again, giving Finn some shoes to fill, and giving old, sad Han a reason to get back in the fight. I also kinda wish there was another Jedi character… either that was Poe from the start, Finn eventually, or a third character altogether… just somewhere. moreover… the original Empire isn’t completely gone, they just control a much smaller part of the galaxy, mostly the old rich core worlds, and exist in an uneasy detente with the New Republic, who control the outer worlds, but loosely, as you’ve outlined… the First Order would be an Imperial splinter group, displeased with the Old Empire’s complacency with their greatly diminished power… this would explain their armor and ships and stuff, and also explain them acting as a guerrilla/insurgent group.

This reminds me of coming out of the theater from seeing Force Awakens and being happy that it actually felt decently acted/written (the prequels had done a number on me), but man, my disappointment once it sank in "oh, it's just Empire vs. Rebels again" was a real bummer. I'd grown up reading those Expanded Universe books, and while plenty of them weren't exactly great, I was just really interested in a post-original trilogy universe where you saw what a New Republic would look like, what challenges it would face, etc. Seeing everything revert to status quo was just deflating, so trying to change that in a rewrite is welcomed.

I really liked this idea of The Resistance actually being the Resistance and not The Rebels all over again, fightining to keep the peace our heroes conquered so many years ago. But, I do have so improvements that I think would be nice. 1) Poe Dameron is Jacen Solo (you can go with whatever name you want, I just like Jacen from Legends). This really helps us attach with the character immediately, since he is the son of a character everybody loves. He looks like Han, acts a little bit like Han, and you can explore a really nice duality between him and Ben. You could even explore that he is a bastard son that Han had during his marriage with Leia, which would change the cause of their divorce. But, it's up to you. 2) Continuing on that, Ben would be the older talented brother, force sensitive, that had a bigger conection with his mother and the Skywalker bloodline. That would explain why he is more a compassionate person (mommy's favorite), but also more arrogant and self assured because of his natural abilities. Jacen would be more like his father, infamous and reckless, but kind-hearted. He would have stayed by his father side after the destruction of Luke's temple, because Han never wanted Ben to go training with Luke. He tought it was dangerous, but Leia always insisted that he needed that. 3) Everybody thinks Ben is dead. Luke never told anyone that Ben was Kylo Ren, keeping all the guilty to himself. 4) I would also change that since Han and Leia are divorced, it's hard to picture they both being generals. I would prefer to see Leia as a politician, you could say that she was elected Chanceller when they defeated the Empire, but it was eventually replaced when someone exposed that Vader was Anakin Skywalker. Then, she would now bee a senator from Tatooine (yes, Tatooine is now a republic system since the death of Jabba and the defeat of the empire). 5) That also goes with another difference I would make on your rewrite: you revelad too son that Kylo Ren is Ben Solo. I also think that this reveal should have been made only in Han's confrontation with Kylo in the end of TFA, so, in my opinion of course, that would have been better. 6) I would change that Kylo Ren stab into Han, because honestly, to me, it does not make sense that first he does not wnat to kill his father, but, the next they meet he does. Instead, like I said, they would only meet in that bridge scene and then Kylo would go for kill Han, but, Chewie saves Han by blasting Kylo. I personally think that if you would like to make Kylo the ultimate bad guy (which to me it's the best approach here, so we don't have Snoke being an Emperor all over again), he should kill Han in the end of the second movie, where he would finally embrace the dark side completely. It also would be interesting to see Leia's reaction to hearing that Kylo is Ben, in a way like she already had sensed that, be never told anyone. 7) Would not be better if Finn was part of the First Order until the end of the movie? Like, he would be part of the stealth team that infiltrates the base. But, in the middle of the battle, when he see all the pain and death that his action were bringing, he would switch sides and helped the Republic. To mee, seens more convincing than what you did. The final confrontation would be between Jacen and Rey against Kylo, and they both would lose. He would injure Jacen's back (like Finn in the original movie) and in the end Finn would show up to help Rey and contain Kylo. Since he did not killed his father, we could see how powerful he already is, besting all three of our new heroes. But, Han would show in the Millenium and pick up everybody. 8) I liked very much your ending with Luke and R2, and makes sense not leaving such a cliff hanger for the next movie. 9) My hint for the next movie: the "map to skywalker" is totally stupid in every single way. Why would Luke leave a map to him if he has gone to exile? Or how somebody found exactly where Luke is to make a map to him? Would not be simpler just to tell Leia where it is? Makes zero sense. Instead, you could make that the map contains the location of every known Jedi Temple and that it was their best shot at finding Luke. So, in the time passed between ep 7 and 8, the new Falcon crew: Rey, Han and Jacen Solo, Chewie and BB-8 (i know you didn't included him, but i can see he being part of the movie very easily, and to me,he is a fine addition to the movie since R2 is not around) would go across several temples to look for Luke. That could be your initial scene from the movie, several beautiful shots from different temples across all the galaxy. One last thing: you didnt seen to include the Knights of Ren in your movie. They don't exist? If so, whats the deal with the name Kylo Ren? Should not he just be a Sith? Well, hope you can answer that in the next movie. Thanks for the great video!

I like it, with some exceptions. 1. Kylo killing Han needs to be changed, in my opinion. There is not enough in Kylo's history to warrant such a drastic action as killing his own father. 2. Finn would not survive a lightsaber cut up his spine. Perhaps a dismembering of a limb? Kylo would not survive a hit from Chewy's crossbow also. That needs to be addressed. 3. If the empire was defeated in Episode VI then who is in control of the remaining military personnel? Who do all those remaining stormtroopers report to and why? 4. The rule of two Siths also needs to be explained. In Episode VI both siths are killed. Kylo is not yet even born. Is Snoke a sith? Is Kylo his apprentice? How and when did that happen?

We need to wait and see what his backstory is on Kylo before making a decision! There’s still story left. Han dying isn’t necessarily a bad idea either it can deal with interesting plot points and can serve Kylo’s character greatly if done right. Now on the military question. Not all of the Empire was destroyed after Episode 6’s events, there were still Imperial Remnants. I think it could just be a collective thing with no clear leader. Maybe in his story that’s how it is until Snoke shows up and takes power.

Very interesting video! I have always been a casual fan of star wars and I didn't mind episodes 7 and 8 (in fact I liked 8 more than 7 even though a lot of people seemed to think episode 8 was the worst episode up until the final one) because I didn't rewatch the original series before I watched the new ones. It was nice to listen to a breakdown for why you didn't like the new movies with context from the old movies. I never even watched Rise of Skywalker because I heard about how it ended and had 0 interest in finishing the trilogy after that lol

This is so much better than what we actually got, it would of been a much better jumping off point I love it! the only missed opportunity I see and maybe its not a GREAT idea, but i think it would be cool to see that the power vacuum created with the fall of the empire is not simply filled with a new empire in the first order but a diverse set of galactic players. We have seen enough of the Pike Syndicate for them to be a interesting inclusion, or bringing the Chiss Ascendency from legends or maybe then Zann Consortium, maybe you could work some great legends characters like prince Xizor. i think there is a lot of room for bringing in Faleen and Chiss factions. the first order can be powerful, but it would be neat if you could see that there power comes from these other factions banding together as they would all be opposed to the rule of the new republic.

oh i almost forgot that maybe there should be some influence of the huts, especially seeing that star wars is meant to rhyme. and they are portrayed as a power in both the original era and the prequel era but have absolutely no presence in the sequel worlds. also I absolutely agree about how stupide star killer base is, but i do think that the first order or the imperial ruminates trying to regain the ability to destroy planets is logical, but should be showed in a diminished sense the same way the second death star is a diminishment of the first. so maybe i would turn to legends influences again and have them working on the Darksaber in legend's it was essentially the super laser portion of the deathstar without all the extra space station bits. obviously it would require a new name, but having the first order create this blind spot in the new republic it could be that either yavin or endor was in that region and in your next re write they could be working to excavate and rebuild the super laser system maybe they have built some hyperspace rings around it that can call back to the jedi fighters from the prequals. i might call it the dark lance or something of the sort. and maybe it works best in the 9th film instead of the ridicules sith fleet that all have deathstar lasers. alternatively there is a concept from legends about rendering planets uninhabitable by damaging the planet core. i think it could be a really interesting idea to expand on if the dark lance concept feels to Samey. Just conceptualizing but maybe they could have some kind of Kyber crystal bomb that they need to drill to the center of a planet, you could use it to expand the lore behind the sith too as this Kyber crystal in the bomb should be made to bleed like the ones in the light sabers of sith, then when it hits the core of the world it turns it into a Darkside planet. one of the only cool ideas touched on in the sequel trilogy is the concept of planets that are strong in the force and work as a nexus. so i think it could be cool to have Snoke to have this weapon to destroy planets but also create dark side nexus worlds out of the ruins. i think that would show the evil of destroying a planets well maintaining a diminishment of power of the first order well also leaving the door open for more and new star wars story's. Modern star wars is firmly in the side of science fiction but there are so many fantasy elements that make up its structure and it would be cool to be able to tell more fantasy driven stories.

When you said that Rey was not going to be jedi-level force sensitivity I immediately thought of Scout, i believe her parents begged a jedi knight to take her after learning she was slighly force sensitive because they didn't have enough money to avoid her either joining a gang, an adict, or force into slavery (s3xual or otherwise). I believe she was never able to make anything levitate but could move small objects, no bigger than an apple, move on surfaces and was an excellent duelist due to most of her sensitivity on the Force was enhanced reflexes and intuition.

This was quite good. Much better than what we got and clearly trying to do something new. The only thing I would change is Luke. In Georges draft, and I think he had the right idea, Luke shows up midway through and his reluctance to train another person is covered in episode 7. Then when you do the time jump between episode 7 and 8 he starts to train Rey so you can reasonably up her skill between movies. Leaving her Jedi training to begin in episode 8 feels like too much of a rehash of 4 and 5.

Opening shot could be the same as Ep 7, with a star destroyer coming into orbit around a planet. Tension rises as we think the Empire are back and are about to bombard/blockade the planet or something. Suprisingly, a similarly sized rebel ship (maybe the Home One, or something familiar) approaches and they both sit there eerily in space. Or perhaps a camera pan reveals New Republic symbols on the star destoyer. Its then revealed that the imperial rennant are there in "good faith" to sign an armistice and re-integrate into the Republic. Perhaps something crazy could happen like another fleet, maybe another imperial or some new faction jumps in and decimates both ships and their escorts...Setting up intruige, confusion and disarray (but not nerfing the Republic) as the heroes need to "mop up" the messy politics and different factins that were made after the re-establishmen of the New Republic. Maybe the "Imperial" and "Republican" factions need to band together to fight a common enemy. Idk. I think the idea of Imperial-Republic tensions and politics would set up huge intruige for audiences. Idk why they didn't adapt the Thrawn trilogy or could go crazy with a "plagueis did master immortality, and returns now palpatine is gone" type storyline that would be massive for the fans and still set up good conflicts. They could still have their rogue stormtrooper. They could still have their hotshots pilot and Ben Solo character. Idk why they undid everything when the blueprints were there

what if… at the beginning of the third act, when the action of the second act has resolved, our heroes are taking a breather (on Coruscant, the Yavin Base, wherever…), they’re discussing what to do about the new threat of tje First Order, and we know now’s the part where the heroes are supposed to plan their attack for the end of the movie so they can win the day… we see some sketchy bois doing something suspicious, somehow we recognize them as First Order insurgents, and they set off a big explosion, destroying a large portion of the base and/or cruiser and much of their starfighter fleet. before the Good Guys can start to get their act together, several Star Destroyers jump into orbit and engage the Good Guy ships guarding the base. haven’t figured out the underlying motivations for the First Order attacking them Good Guys at this point… perhaps they’re still after a macguffin, or perhaps they just want to take advantage of so many Republic leaders being in one place, and use their previously un-revealed fleet to get the jump on them?

I would have started VII with a surprise resurgence of the remnants of the Empire. Luke and Company have to discover what is going on, and they find that Darth Plagus is trying to resurrect Darth Vader, through cloning, etc. Luke's fledgling Jedi, under the guidance of their master, need to find a way to kill Plagus. But somewhere along the way, Luke dies to save his Jedi trainees, and they have to work together with their unique abilities to both extinguish the Sith AND end the sudden remergence of the remnants of the Empire....

I agree with this idea. The sequels should have been about the rebuilding of the republic in which we see a small fragment of the Empire still lurking about that is a threat that needs to be taken out by the end of the trilogy. I actually tweaked the story of Rogue One to set it before Episode 7, replacing some certain with others, renaming others, and changing leadership roles too. For example, Cassius Andor becomes Jake Skywalker, son of Luke. Tarkin is replaced by Hux, Vader by Kylo Ren. Mon Mothma is the Chancellor of the New Republic and Han Solo is thrown in as one of Mothma's workers taking over the Bail Organa role. The death star becomes StarKiller base and we get more of an origin on that. I threw more dialogue about the Force and the Whills, something Lucas himself wanted to dwell more on in this trilogy which was a breeze thanks to the Chirruit and Blaze characters. In the end, I have Jyn, Jake, and Bodha all live and make it out of Scariff in time when the land is struck by the StarKiller base. Then this could lead into The Force Awakens which again, tweaks of its own to suit the new trio. Finn, Rey, and poe are no longer around here as Jyn, Jake, and Bodha is in their place. This is a few years later. Snoke does not exist so Kylo is the main baddie here. I have Leia replacing Maz Kanata and her and Han still together. The last movie would be that of The Last Jedi, but done differently. Luke is not the character we actually see him be and is more in line of what he was in the original trilogy. And because evil is always going to exist no matter what. I don't mind the trilogy still ending like The Last Jedi where the villain, Kylo, has somewhat redeemed a bit but is not quite good and we have the heroes ready to fight another battle if need be. So, its not the depressing ending of the prequels or the happy ending to the original trilogy, but in the middle which is a suitable ending given its left open. BUT, I scrapped the entire project because I realize I did not want to redo three movies and I merely started tweaking TFA script before giving up. Hell, I see there was no point to really do a TRILOGY of movies but rather one final movie that acts as an epilogue to both trilogies. No need to drag out the story. I plan to do a new project, condensing material from RO, TFA, and TLJ. I would throw in Darth Maul to give him more to do and be that tie to the prequels and have Kylo work for him who is a clone of Luke Skywalker made from the hand that was cut off in Empire as told in one of those books where we see Luuke Skywalker, the evil clone. The story would be about Luke settling down on a planet with his family made up of him, Mara Jane, and Jake. He gets taken away by bad guys, a small remnant against the New Republic led by Darth Maul. Years later, Jake is grown and learns Luke escaped Mauls clutches but he left a map of where to find him hidden away for his loved ones to find so the mission is Jake and his new ally friends trying to get a hold of this before Maul does. Jake and his comrades get it and they find Luke. Jake is trained under him to be a Jedi, and later confronts Kylo and Maul. Jake talks Kylo into turning against Maul which is a success as he did Snoke in TLJ, but not quite seeing eye to eye with the Jedi way and goes off to do his own thing that is left ambiguous for now. Jake and the rebellion celebrate their victory in the meantime hoping to start up a new generation of Jedi known as Skywalkers. Boom, a nice single story that is nothing big and crazy as far as the Empire legacy is concerned and leaves off on an open book note which could lead to spinoff flicks as opposed to the main saga itself.

The actual best option would have been to introduce an external threat to the galaxy, and how the remnants of the empire and the new republic dealt with the new protagonist(s) on the scene. I believe that this was done in the EU. Other players could also contribute to the power struggle (mandalorians, space pirates, huts). There were actually some good concepts in 7, 8 & 9 that weren't fully realised; I would have liked to have seen a real effort of the Imperials in trying to decide on the heir to the empire, be it a Skywalker, Palpatine, or another dark side user such as Maul. A lot of missed opportunities imho.

Opening: You see a new senate finally making some headway with the full of the empire. This new republic does not want to make same mistake as before so they don't allow jedis to be so close this time around, in fact, they want laws registering all training jedis; making sure no powerful uprising ever happens again, and Luke does not like this. We meet Solo's daughter, main character. She's a pilot and does many runs, legally, for Luke on the outer rim, where new jedis are starting their training Meanwhile the last of the Empire are gonna make their last stand. Luke wants to take out the last of the Darkside once and for all and the senate wants to put it to vote and does not like the new jedis are taking action, causing a three way fight. The last of empire attack Luke's home planet and use it as their staying base. Solo's daughter and Luke team up. They go to planet and try and put a stop to it. Solo joins, with Princess does her fighting on senate floor like her mom once did.... We get the big finish, where we have good fight scenes, dog fights in air, and lightsaber action when all of a sudden... A giant ship appears. Warriors fall out the ship and begin attacking all sides, killing Solo and the main bad guy. Luke barely makes out alive with his niece.... The planet is completely taken over, and people slaughter. No one wins.... Yuuzhan Vong has arrived.... End of ep 9

This does a good job of showing Rey as being force sensitive but not being overly powerful from the get-go. Later on she is revealed to be a Palpatine and that seems to be Disney's way of explaining why she is so good without any training. To counter that, Anakin had an insane amount of midichlorians (love them or hate them, still a part of the lore and good example) yet mostly just showed great piloting skills and intuition in both the Podrace and the attack on the Trade Federation's lucrehulk droid control ship during TPM. The abilities that Rey showed were like a level 1 character that has all of the stats of a level 10 unlocked in a game. Feels cheap and makes it seem boring. By a stark contrast, in both the prequels and original trilogy, we saw Anakin/Luke steadily increase their prowess in the force from almost nothing throughout 3 episodes. If as the sequel trilogy went on we saw her getting steadily more and more powerful with the force, potentially even unlocking some legendary force powers, I think it would be more believable and justify the Palpatine heritage.

You could perhaps move up the meeting between Finn and Rey to before/during tha battle, and it would take the two of them to defeat an injured and distraught Kylo. This would underscore how dangerous Ren is and complete Finn’s journey. Finn is implied to have melee training and we see that stromtrooper with a melee weapon on Takonada that can withstand lightsabers. We could illustrate Kylo’s mastery by having him fight Rey with a lightsaber and Finn with the melee weapon. At one point they could get separated somehow, perhaps Kylo uses the Force to push Finn away, and the geography makes it impossible for him to rejoin until the very end where Kylo is clearly having the upper hand. Then Finn tries to rescue Rey, he gets severely injured in the process, but manages to incapacitate Kylo by shooting him in the leg or something. Rey and Finn then escape with Finn barely being able to walk and barely being concious, thus completeing the circle of everyone saving each other.

The best idea for a sequel trilogy, in my opinion, would have been to show the challenges of the new generation succeeding the old one, especially as it had been so successful. Can the new characters live up to the legacies of Luke, Han and Leia? What are their challenges? What are their failures and successes? I feel like that was too much thought for the creators of the new trilogy though, especially as they were just playing to the crowd after the prequels.

Star Wars episode 7 was a great idea. From the initial success of the first film Lucas talked of a trilogy of trilogies (sometimes a quartet of trilogies) he then had a messy divorce with Marcia Lucas who was his muse and he wrapped up the whole thing with Return of the Jedi instead of projecting the story of Luke (temporarily lost to the dark side) and his mysterious sister (not Leia) finally defeating the Emperor in episode 9 or 12. The prequels were badly written and directed but they had a narrative arc. The sequels we got were better acted and directed but lacked an arc. But the idea isn't just great it's Lucas' idea. He changes his mind, he lies, he lies about changing his mind. He is an interesting guy.

23:00 Both Obi-wan and Biggs tell us that Luke is a good pilot in ANH, so while not as good - narratively - as showing it beforehand, the story doesn't really offer the same opportunity to show it, and the budget probably didn't, either. So we had to settle for telling. It is true that Anakin shouldn't have been a good pilot as if by magic in TPM as it stands - I know this sounds gamer-y as hell, but an F1 driver has all the attributes to be a good pilot, but lacks the necessary skills and knowledge. Had the pod race taken part in space, well, the age would still have been weird, but it would have established Anakin as a pilot before the battle at Naboo. This is why I'd alter Rey's intro. Maybe the scrapyard has an aerial crane or something, and she can fly that. Sure, she's no longer just a lowly scavenger, but the fact that she can have this valuable skill, and still be treated really poorly, builds into the internal conflict of "this place is bullshit, but I *have* to stay or I'll never see my parents again".

Episode 6 did NOT perfectly tie up everything in a nice bow. The second death star and two leaders are killed and in the next scene there's a bunch of celebration. It's never that easy ! I would make Ep. 7 start right after Ep. 6, not 30 years later. The Rebel fleet meets the remaining Empire fleet under new command. Thrawn f.ex. They can't fight, because the fleets are two evenly matched and the galaxy is split in half. The celebration seen is on the Rebel half. Then, insurgencies, cold war espionage, diplomacy and refugees happen. I'd pair this with a philisophical battle between the light and dark sides of the force including the Whills of the force, in some fasion. And I'd motivate some empire leader's joining of the empire and later giving over the empire to the rebels, with the yuzhan vong - a threat from oitside the galaxy.

I think the full Star Wars/Skywalker Saga deserves four trilogies, not three… the first sequel trilogy, in the slot of the trilogy we got, would have to show the decline of the galaxy yet again, but the finale trilogy resolves things yet again, but the focus would have to much more spiritual in nature, about the Force, and defeating the Dark Side itself, and not just the First Order… or something like that, with the revelation that the Skywalker Line is the “Chosen One,” not just Anakin, maybe… and it would need to end with the Jedi Order actually rebuilt, not just with the promise or hope for the future. OR… a _rearranged_ saga, where the original trilogy actually episodes 7-9: - episodes 1-3 would be the glory days of the Jedi and the Republic, with Obi-Wan as the main character, and increasingly a young Anakin as his Padawan… basically _Phantom Menace_ expanded into a trilogy. - episodes 4-6 would show the politics of the prequels, with the start of the Clone Wars, and Anakin, as a young man, falling to the Dark Side, like we’ve seen… just with an extra movie to flesh things out. - episodes 7-9, would still be largely the same, but it would need to imply that the Empire wasn’t completely defeated, just that the Rebellion’s efforts effectively started a full-scale civil war, with more equally matched sides. Vader/Anakin’s redemption would still happen, but he doesn’t outright kill Palpatine, destroy the Sith, bring Balance, at least not yet… - episodes 10-12 would have similarities to the sequels, but things would have continuity with the prior trilogy, not just the same paradigm as before that somehow restarted itself… Kylo Ren could still be a Vader poser, but I think Rey would have to be his sister or something, as cliche as that sounds. the spirit and legacy of Anakin, both as a Jedi and as Vader, would be central, with the Jedi legacy ultimately winning out. - and this is a small detail, but I wish Kylo had survived _TROS…_ instead of dying, we’d see a penultimate scene of Ben Solo climbing the steps to the Jedi monastery on Ahch-To, mirroring Rey’s journey in _TFA,_ and then taking a pose on the cliff in the same spot where Luke stood… he’s there to spiritually atone and find his way again, or something like that… sooo, it’s like this: - Part 1: Anakin’s Rise (via Qui-Gon & Obi-Wan) - Part 2: Anakin’s Fall (via Obi-Wan & Palpatine) - Part 3: Anakin’s Redemption (via Luke, & Leia?) - Part 4: Anakin’s Legacy (via Luke, Rey, & Kylo)
