Rewinding a Spring Reverb Transducer Coil

I had a spring reverb with an open transducer coil.
I used a skateboard to harvest magnet wire from a pickup, then re-wound it back onto the coil... And it works!

That skateboard trick...dude... The chuck Taylor shoe tread on the bottom of your drive pedal....man I can just tell that youve got a way of thinking. If you reshoot some of this stuff, and really get into nitty gritty of thumbnails and titles and diy and tricks and tips and all that..... You've got yourself a channel, an in,to the industry, and many gearheads that will come and follow. I hope you consider that. Having a channel with a community changes people's lives. The internet era is amazing, and you seem like a smart humble likable guy whose been around, and has stories. Hope to see some of that in the future

Thank you, and very much appreciated. Unfortunately, I just don't have the bandwidth for Channel-worthy production. Watching Ryan at 60Hz Hum do the setup, shooting and editing process in-person, proves it's a full-time job in itself!!

How difficult was it to re-attach the springs and all that? I've been staring at a spring pan and it's not obvious to me what the best way to disassemble and reassemble it in order to remove and reinstall the transducer.

Saw you on 60 cycle hum. Cool stuff. Just stopping by to sub and check out your channel. I love reverb. I haven't messed with pans, but I definitely want to learn about the things as a whole

Hi Austin. Do you by any chance know the original gauge of wire used for old 1960s Gibbs spring reverb tanks used in Fender Reverb Units? I have a open transducer coil as well. Thanks.

No, but I'd bet Google knows. For the record, this was not a vintage Gibbs pan. In this experiment, all I cared about was that it worked... And it does. The pickup wire I harvested from a modern cheap import guitar pickup was probably a little heavier than the original wire I removed from the bobbin. I got lucky with the DC Resistance: What I wound (198 Ohms) was within 10% of a second unit that I measured at 210 Ohms. No idea of the length or number of turns. I totally winged-it.

Hello. I have a Harley Benton GA5 guitar amp into which I would like to build in a spring reverb. Which I'll take from an old Laney PL50 Reverb Can you tell me where to attach it according to the diagram? I want to build it into the body and mix in the sound of reverb.

It's not technically "impossible", but it's WAAAAAAY more complicated than that. You can't just insert a reverb pan into a circuit. You need a driver amp and a recovery amp that the GA5 doesn't have, and you need to match electrical impedances and signal levels. Get a Summer Reverb Pedal from www.AustinMics.com/reverb

@@AustinMics but a guitar pedal can be made from these springs. It’s not necessary to use lamps!

@@iBorsch You are correct. No Tubes, Valves, or Lamps are required, but real spring reverb requires two additional amplifier stages that are not in a GA5. Transistors or op-amps must excite the springs, and a recovery amplifier must increase the output level and impedance to guitar level. You cannot simply connect a spring pan to an existing amplifier by soldering wires to part of the GA5 circuit. You need to design and add TWO additional amplifier stages.

Does a random/scatter/handwound transducer open up the top end like a handwound guitar pickup does?

That wasn't my goal here. I had a broken winding, and i just wanted to see if I could fix it with stuff on-hand and some creative engineering.

I would assume it would have somewhat less capacitance when scatter wound. It would be interesting to compare them. I would guess it wouldn't be a dramatic difference when most reverb circuits roll off some highs.
