    Anankin and Padme's love story. What worked about it and what didn't. Do you think it was the dialogue? Lack of chemistry between the actors? Also, many people think this is the weakest of the prequels. Do you agree? If so, why? What would you change about the movie?

    I think the overall outline story of AOTC is the best out of the all the movies in the saga, however everything else is pretty much just the worst. I remember reading a leaked outline months before the movie came out and it just sounded epic but I left the theatre largely disappointed. You touched on it slightly in this episode when you discussed about the whole force mythology but would love to hear your thoughts on the whole 'balance of the force' prophecy and George's decision to make Anakin a chosen one as opposed to just a random Jedi who turns bad. I honestly think it took away a lot from the character and big part of the reason I struggle with the prequels is this underling story element and how it basically makes Anakin, to me at least, hard to get behind and ultimately unlikeable. Oh, and although I've got nothing against Hayden's portrayal, Jake Gyllenhaal should have been cast as Anakin.

    “You overdid it.” I always took that as a display of criticism from padawan to master, and kind of an over-step on Kenobi’s part to drive home that he didn’t always approve of his master’s methods. Great discussion of The Phantom Menace! I was 24 on the verge of turning 25 when the movie came out, and I was so excited for a new Star Wars movie in the theater I was practically hyperventilating when it started. Of the thee prequels, PM was always the one I had the least problems with over the years once I really thought about it after seeing it again. Watching The Clone Wars definitely helped in viewing AOTC and ROTS in recent years as well as finally getting around to reading and/or listening to the novelizations of all three prequels.

    I'm really liking this and doing the dives into all the films. It makes me want to go back and do a Star Wars rewatch and I personally always do it in chronological order, just how my brain works. Phantom Menace was the first Star Wars film I watched in a movie theater, so Episode I will always have a special place in my heart. My favorite line from Palpatine is "Wipe them out, all of them", I was just found that to be a cool line and what happens after it.

    I loved listening to you guys talk about this! You made me rethink some aspects of the movie. I was 7 when I saw the original Star Wars in the theater back in the day so I'm one of those people that had a hard time loving the prequels. When I first watched "Phantom Menace" I convinced myself I loved it because it was a new Star Wars movie. However, I focused on the weak parts of the movie when I rewatched it over the years. I think like, Kristian, I might be coming around to enjoying it again. One thing that I still don't understand is the whole Trade Federation and what they wanted with Naboo. If someone could explain it, I'd be grateful. I also think the podracing scene is too long. I will always love "Duel of the Fates" and the epic lightsaber battle. I'm going to do the rewatch with you guys. I'm looking forward to the next episode!

  • @Nintendoggy

    @Nintendoggy

    I don't remember completely but it's something like this: the Trade Federation didn't like that the Republic wanted to tax corporations that operated in the Outer Rim. Naboo is near the border of it (which it's why it's so close to Tatooine and Geonosis). So they made a legal(?) blockade around the planet as a form of protest. Because they like not paying taxes like the greedy corporation that they are. They worked with Sidious who promised them he could manipulated the Senate in their favor. But then, as Nute said, it began going out of hand with everything going off-plan. The Queen didn't sign the treaty, was missing, and their starvation of people was slowly turning into a war crime, and now there was a Sith apprentice hanging in his new castle. But it was then too late to back off. Ironically Gunray would fall victim to be the same thing in episode 2 - he got swept into a galactic war and it was now too late to back out even if Padmé wasn't assassinated.

    I happened to rewatch this movie just a few days before you did this episode, and it is amazing how the description of your reaction mirrors mine. I’m an OT era fan who basically hated it at 23 years old and was firmly in the “this is not Star Wars” crowd. It’s amazing what time and perspective will do. None of the things that bothered me then bother me now, and actually George was so far out ahead of me, as was the tech he used to make it, that I just didn’t get what he was doing. It’s a really fun movie that was clearly made for kids younger than the kids ANH was made for; it’s creative to the nines, and it’s too bad it carries the legacy it does though I know that’s changing. Anyway, a little late to the game here, but I appreciated hearing the Council’s take on it, and I’m looking forward to showing my son who’ll be 5 in a few weeks. Thanks for all the great incite going back to the JC days and keep it up!

    I know you guys are all busy, but I think it would be a great idea to cover the novelizations of the films as well! TPM novelization really improves upon Lucas’s script and has some really interesting background on what the Sith were. It also provides some great political world building that the film was sorely lacking. There’s also stuff in AOTC novelization that really adds some much needed emotional depth to Anakin, and the growth of the relationship between Anakin and Padme comes off a lot more natural. Finally, Matt Stover’s ROTS novelization is just an incredibly written piece of art. The novel beautifully captures Anakin’s inner conflict and feelings throughout the film. Look forward to you guys covering the next movies!

    @@days80sfan Oh yes! The film doesn’t focus enough on all the lies he’s been told by the Jedi and how that has affected him, nor does it focus enough on the fact that Anakin believes that he can single handedly end the war. Anakin’s anger at the Jedi for letting the war continue is a big reason why he grows distant from them.

    I always understood Sidious’ plan in episode 1 was to get the trade federation to take over naboo and effectively starting the separatists early. Remember the clones are being grown secretly at this time, so it isn’t to much of a stretch that Sidious would have the separatist develop early. The conflict would still lead to Palpatine becoming chancellor. Plans changed when the queen escaped and they found Anakin. Than the plan changed to starting the clone wars later, when Anakin was older.

    If I could change one thing about the prequels, I wish Naboo would have been Alderaan instead. We would have had multiple movies to build an emotional connection to a planet, and it’s destruction in A New Hope would be more impactful. I'm a prequalist much like Ken. There so much lore and world building taking place that was being overlooked by other issues folks had. These are the seeds of the fall of the republic and the Jedi order, the rise of the emperor and the Empire. The politics bored a lot of people, but where this started is very important to the overall story. Our own world's history is filled with politics and diplomacy. Perhaps viewed as episodic story telling (ala clone wars) as each episode seems to stand on its own. The time jumps between them works. (Who really wants to watch Anikin in school for 10 years?) Anyway, it's great to see the fandom at least enjoying the movies for what they are. (Heck, go watch Age of Ultron now that we've seen Engame. It's a different experience now.)

Looked too much like a cartoon. 20+ years later, I can accept that this is a kids movie, buy it's a bad kids movie. I definitely enjoyed it more this time around, but I think I pod racing scene is too long. Also, the age gap between Anikin and Padme is concerning. It's weird. Can't get over that.

    Qui Gon is my favorite Jedi. I often think about what may have happened to Anakin if he were trained by his father-figure Qui Gon vs. what we know happened to him as he was trained by his brother-figure. I think if he had Qui Gon around, his life would've turned out differently. That's the true triumph of the Sith in the prequels; killing Qui Gon to make sure Anakin was mistreated to allow for him to rise to be Darth Vader. Qui Gon's arrogance probably comes from his upbringing as a Jedi. He is basically a natural Jedi. Everything came easy to him. So I'm sure every teacher has been inflating his ego throughout the years.
