It still baffles me that they never even tried to do a single player campaign. It could have been a nice 10 hour campaign split between the hunters and the monsters perspective. It could have been something like Titanfall 2

The DLC strategy was 100% what killed this game, the gameplay was actually pretty solid. The argument of "Its just running in circles" is just not good, like of course if you never double-back or take sound clues you will of course only run in circles, just like in any CoD map. The gatekeeping of the variety of playstyles of monsters and hunters is 100% what killed engagement and community of the game.

Was coming to say just this, glad I checked! I'm old enough to remember when a live service game was a "new" concept for mainstream gaming, excluding MMOs. I hate 95% of them and would argue they are all doing the same crap over and over. Evolved was very fun with friends. Hit and run tactics with Behemoth, or Snatch and kill with Wraith. It definitely died from monetization, which is funny looking at gaming today it would've fit right in.

I get where you're coming from, but the difference between this and let's day dead by daylight is that it's players running from a single monster, which creates the tension of playing smart, and your chances of survival going down as the match goes on. With Evolve, it's not a horror or suspense game, it's an action/hunt game where it's a race against the clock for the hunters to find and trap the monster before it gets to its max level, where it's game over. It creates a situation where a skilled enough monster player is gonna just build the distance and avoid the humans nearly the entire game, leaving the hunters with just about nothing but running for a 10-15 minute period with a most likely loss waiting for them at the end. The concept is great, but something was missing in the execution that left a hole in the gameplay loop. Either situations that forced more encounters between the two or a 3rd party enemy that one group could use to their advantage to defeat the other, like a lvl 1 monster leading the hunters into a creature that is tough to take down and let's the monster jump in and attack, giving it a chance to deal significant damage or even get an early win if they play it smart, and the hunters could do the same thing, baiting a max lvl monster into aggroing the same creature and making it choose to run or push for the win at the risk of loosing. As it is, it's just a mouse hunt where the hunters win if they catch you before you lvl up, or you win because you're too powerful to stop. The entire strategy is based around chasing the monster or running from the hunters, none of the actual hunting or fighting.

Evolve made me so sad back in the day. I remember thinking the idea had so much potential, but it launched with barely any content and literally hundreds of dollars in DLC, killing the game overnight. I cannot comprehend why Turtle Rock thought they could be so brazen as to squeeze a game that had *barely* even come out yet for every little penny, but they did, and it never recovered. It's why I didn't trust them at all for Back 4 Blood and never bothered to pick that game up. Talk about ruining your reputation as a studio.

I wish people got to experience EVOLVE the way that I did. After the initial exodus of people left, everyone that was left KNEW HOW TO PLAY THE GAME. It suffered from people in roles that had no idea what they were doing that would absolutely cripple the experience for the rest of the hunters even if they were world class players in those roles. It was the type of game where you couldn’t carry a bad player dragging down a team and everyone had to play their role perfectly. Assault not doing damage? Monster grows to Stage 3 and kills you. Medic isn’t healing? Everyone’s dead. Tracker running in circles for 15 minutes thinking they can run as fast as the giant monster instead of anticipating their path and cutting them off? The hunters might as well have played as the monster and waited until friends logged on to play as a team. I ended up in the top 15 in North America on one of the monsters, and played with a few friends that also rose to the top (because of our playtime, not skill, it should be said). Their mistake was not having a system in place to hotfix at launch, and had to wait for PS/XBOX to approve a balance patch. Once they added hotfixing, they could tweak damage, healing, speed, movement etc. values and adjust the balance on the fly. The Wraith was too OP (it actually wasn’t, but a team that wasn’t communicating, coordinating, and skilled that was working together didn’t have much of a chance against this monster more than most). I’ve never played a game that was so satisfying as both a video game and a mind game. Especially playing against friends, who know which character you’re best with (and whether they make a team to combat that or you fake them out and pick something else) and what your strategy is (do you run far and then feed or stealth around and leave a fake set of tracks, or like me, be there waiting and fight them as they drop as a stage 1 monster). Too many monster players were afraid to fight early. I miss this game and wish the F2P conversion happened for consoles. I’m not sure if it’s still possible but all I need is to get 4 other friends together and a private lobby and we just swap out who gets to play the monster and it was endless fun. Their marketing team f**ked them with the cosmetics and back then a persistent online game with no single player campaign was unheard of (look at Fortnite now). They did have a good deal for ppl that knew they were in to save money on buying monsters early, but back then, microtransactions were the dirtiest of words and the conversation became more about them than the game itself. Once the Arena mode was added and it gave people a chance to just learn combat, it also dramatically increased the matchups you would have. I miss that game so much.

"no single player campaign was unheard of (look at Fortnite now)" uh wtf are you talking about? You must not have even played the 'save the world' PVE part of the game in order to make that inaccurate statement. While it is designed to be a co-op pve, it can still 100% be played solo with a bot squad (which I have played plenty of matches like that). Though even if playing the single player pve campaign, it is still a persistent online game.

EVOLVE was SUPER FUN, like genuenly. The only problem was (as the IGN review stated) that it is fun IF THE HUNTERS (and specifically the “TRACKER”) knew what they were doing. It required map knowledge, once u knew the general direction you HAD TO go in front of the monster, and the trapper/tracker had to deploy the DOME that boxed it in for a time. Problem people in generally are lets say not good at most games (look at any rank distribution of any competitive online game) PLUS u had the handicap of matchmade randoms, and that meant that OFTEN it DEVOLVED (hahh see what I did there?) into running circles around eachother, untill the monster won. Can’t tell you how many times I didn’t get trapper, but managed to cut off the monster MULTIPLE times, only to not be able to dome it and it running away while my tracker caught up xdxd

Very much disagree that Evolve's problem was overhype and bad gameplay. The gameplay itself *could* be really fun, but if you had a bad Tracker the Monster was almost guaranteed to win. So while there would be plenty of fun games, there would be plenty that just felt like a huge waste of time. All that is if you could find a match given that the matchmaking was horrible. Then you had the DLC/monetization issue which just made things worse.

I guess if you tried to play online with randoms, it would be like that, running around, no one knows wtf to do, the guy that suppose to track doesn't track, etc. But I've played Evolve with my buddies, and we knew WTF to do. You could corner monster up relevantly fast if he didn't know the map, and even then, if your team knows how to move around, he's fucked. Hunting him down wasn't a problem 80% of the time, the issue was to lock him down in place and eliminate him at once 'cause all the monsters had the ability to escape far and quick. But at this point, he's a mere prey. The game was fun, a bit difficult 'cause of all the coordination and tactical role play, but I think devs killed it with their greed first and foremost. Then people's fatigue of constantly running circles played a part. And, eventually, Evolve's player count degraded to unsustainable numbers. RIP another unique multiplayer experience. Long live generic easy to pick up and play garbage games suitable for everyone!

Every game was either the monster player gets caught on a wall or messes up somehow and then you just jump them right at the very start or it turns into like a solid 30 minutes straight of running in circles around the map chasing the monster, following footsteps, birds, and whatever until they got level 3 and, depending on what monster they picked (I remember there being one in particular that like pretty much always won, it was so blatantly overpowered, but I can't remember the name) it could actually maybe turn into a decent clash or you just get murdered and like neither winner or loser really get to have that much active fun with the game bc of how short the altercation really ended up being

Video game reviews are largely subjective, with around 90% based on personal opinions and experiences. The remaining 10% focuses on objective facts, covering aspects that are universally true, such as graphics quality, technical performance, and gameplay features. Balancing these elements offers a well-rounded review, though individual preferences and biases inevitably influence the overall assessment. that’s why I do my own reviews for my own sake, i don’t listen to anyone else’s crsp until i personally played it, THEN, i will go back and listen to a review of someone to see there thoughts and so my own personal opinion won’t get construed of his feelings on it

What's interesting is that this game was considered meh by many because it was a team running around a map hunting one person or a monster but a game like Dead by Daylight has done very well and lasted for years when the roles are reversed. DbD is essentially Evolve but the hunters are now a single killer or monster hunting multiple survivors. I guess the fact that its one vs a team really does change the dynamic or feel of the game.

@@Tampafan33 I agree in that the bigger maps exaggerate the issues of Evolve in a way that Dead by Daylight doesn't. However the maps are still big enough to cause some similar situations of chasing survivors or survivors being great at hiding and escaping dragging things out. Ultimately though I think even if you put DbD on much bigger maps its still one person looking for a group vs a group looking for one person. The amount of action and ability to have run ins when its one vs multiple people is far higher than the reverse even if the reverse has a huge character running around.

There were a dozen ways to find the monster. Running as a 4man was a noob trap. There was a dome you could trap the monster in and it lasted for like 2 min. You could kill most monsters in 30 seconds if they are trapped in the open. If you landed a dome in the first half of the match while the monster was level 1 or 2 it's totally screwed. Then they got greedy and charged 10 bucks for a different shade of color for the monster or the price of the entire game for each season, and the power creep. If you didn't unlock the new season of hunters but the monster was one of the new ones, the game became really unfair.

Turtle Creek created an amazing game. What killed Evolve was the greed from Take 2 and the Dlc causing a lot of ppl to nope right on out. A technical issue of not getting full player matches also hurt this game. Evolve was ahead it's time in many ways. But it's publisher and network issues is what did them in.

The point WAS to hunt as a group, that's why you had 4 distinct roles with Assault, Trapper, Medic, and Support. Things fell apart when hunters would split up and worked substantially better when the 4 stuck together. Dead by Daylight has a similar game structure but doesn't require coordination even at the lowest level and that's where i think that game has been able to be much more successful

This could’ve changed the landscape of Multiplayer games. The hype to launch was crazy high, the betas were promising, but then the final launch was so absolutely baffling that it instantly killed any chance the game had. Tragic.

I remember this game. I absolutely loved it for about 2 weeks. They needed a single player game and tutorials for how to play all the hunters. As it stood matches would be 1 of 2 things. Either the hunters no how to work as a team. If they do they'll quickly find the monster and tear him to shreds. Or they don't know how to work as a team in which case the monster just gets full powered and tears the hunters apart. It was no in between.

So the balance was that at Stage 1 the Monster is weaker than the Humans, at Stage 2 the Monster can fight evenly with a group of Hunters, and Stage 3 the Monster is too powerful for the Hunters. The problem with Stage 1 is that the group of Hunters always had a tracker of some type and no matter how hard you tried to hide your tracks someone would find you. And when they released the Hunter that an energy cage, it was basically over for the Monster because the cooldown on the ability was the length that the ability lasts. So they'd just throw it up again and continuously trap you. I loved being the Monster, but it was so ridiculously one sided unless the Hunters were incompetent.

The monster didn't start out strong enough to take on a squad of players. It had to eat other monsters the map and... evolve... Exploring individually, or in say pairs, was absolutely a viable strategy because a player could find the monster early and call for reinforcements.

Turtle Rock Studio is one of those studios I wish was good. They are innovative, evolve was basically the same formula as Dead By daylight, but they never stick the landing. They have good ideas, for other studios. There were some excellent people behind Evolve. One of the largest D&D youtubers is Matt Colville, who did the writing for Evolve. His writing is good. When he left the company to make RPG content he brought some of Turtle Rock with him. They appear to be very good, and very competent people as well. Its just that Turtle Rock itself can't seem to pull together something that ties innovation, style, and gameplay.

Every creator featured in the video sounds like they have a decent microphone, at the very least it sounds like they care about the quality. Then you have DSP who sounds like he's recording his audio from a public restroom, like he set his camera down on the toilet paper dispenser and is just shouting at it while he wipes.

The problem with this type of asymmetrical type game is that it can be basically unplayable solo. Unlike a dead by daylight or even a game like left 4 dead, a game which the same people made, you can definitely have some fun solo queuing, but in evolve one solo queuing player can just can ruin it for the whole hunter squad

I don't think the game was ever designed for hunters to split up and find the monster. It doesn't really make sense. There's a class that's specifically made to track it. So it would make sense to follow them. Also, thus game is completely different if you have a competent tracker.

i think the main issue with evolve was that monster being able to see the hunters though walls at all times. this made it so someone trying to win will run when they are close and the hunters never see the monster till the end when its fully evolved and ready to kill the hunters. if they had no ablity to see the hunters they would have found the monster more leading to a much more fun game. also making the game more scary for the monster early game.

It wasn't with a game, but I was telling people that DC Studios and James Gunn explaining a 10 year plan for DC content with two movies a year with multiple TV shows isn't really something to get excited about because it seems like explaining your 10 year plan is more for shareholders and investors than the actual fans who grew up loving DC. And I got fucking quartered for it.

I agree with many of your points, but one of the things about evolve is that it was actually unique and did something different. I think gamers ultimately don't want a game where they ever feel less powerful than other players and so in a game like evolve where it's inherently asymmetric people aren't going to enjoy it because they don't feel like the main character. I think the last thing that really put the Nile in the coffin for revolve was the horrible monetization and the sheer lack of variety within the game. There were only so many combinations of enemies and hunters that you could use and with such a steep unlock curve it just meant the gameplay did get stale I miss it though

The absolute worst part is the dlc for the game. The characters are in the game but you have to pay to unlock them, however the store has been shut down which means you can no longer play the characters that are in the game. If your going to shut down the store you might as well make them free. I emailed 2k about this issue and they said they can do nothing about it. Even the physical disks of which I bought the ultimate edition because I thought they would have a code in which you could unlock the dlc characters. Does not work as once again the store no longer exists. Tldr very sad

the thing that was wrong with Evolve, is that developers didn't take into account player motivation. The devs unintentional create a game where the monster player and the hunters players don't want to engage with each other because its not beneficial . Thus both parties end up being passive rather than active. This was due the fact once the monster player reach level 3 the hunters have no hope of beating him, but when the monster player is at level one, he has no hope of beating the hunter players. So the monster player spends most of his time hiding waiting to reach level 3 and hunter players spend most their time wondering around doing nothing because they cant find the monster player and once they do his at level 3. That why in game like among us , the dev created systems that ensure and encourages players to engage with each other rather just wasting time, doing nothing until they win. In my opinion games are about being active not a passive watcher.
