I love the the Curfboard truck actually blown away having a Surf background. I don’t know but the truck design just flows so much more like a surfboard feeling in a bowl, but that said it’s definitely not a beginner truck system skating bowl and transitions. The thing is that you have to go fast in a bowl and not slow to avoid the dredged unintended turn hitting an angled transitions. I went flying midair more than once. Drop ins is smooth, so easy. Love the low truck riding height. I feel that that I was outgrowing my other trucks like the Cx’s,YOW and SmoothStar. I tried many different wheelbase and I would recommend a hybrid skateboard design for a wheelbase between 14" to 16" Bustin Yoface or any carver from the pool and park series. Wheelbase above that I would just go with any surfskate that fits your surf stand. Roots longboards a small English skateboard manufacturer make this amazing all purpose board called Fluxy 30" 10" like a retro 80 style pool board with modern features make sure that you order the adjustable wheelbase 16.5 " or 19.5 ". Its expensive but highly recommendable, in fact if you own a soulboardiy then you definitely also want this. I would say that the Curfboard trucks is something that you shouldn’t judge only by it’s cover. It’s a truck system that will grow on you and make you a better surfskater.

When surfing, the back foot engages the rail. Not the front foot. To my experience, the curfboard better replicates surfing than any other system due to: 1- curfboard is pumpable without front foot wiggle. Just pump with back foot and there you go! 2- surfing doesn’t spring back to centre. There are no bushings in surfing, it’s free flow just like the curfboard (Disclaimer: surfer and owner of a curfboard) Happy skating!

Appreciate the input, Paulo. One of my main goals this year is to get out of my own way as a non-surfer and not the best rider. You'll see me involving more surfers and better riders to give people a more complete picture of all these boards. Thank you!

I think Joey(a surfer like me too) likes the return to center for many reasons....and I agree cause I have reasons. Maybe, we can all be a team and grow together, or at least have various opinions together. First of all, comparing a surfskate on land to a surfboard on wave only goes so far. I will explain why I prefer a return to center like Joey. If we hit a lip surfing, do a floater, re-entry, etc, we use wave energy and momentum to turn our bodies perhaps close to the same direction with a wave closing. If we do a floater in surfing, or jump of a sidewalk 5 inches high on a surfskate like Joey sort of mentions, we are not anywhere close to the same rail position...we kind of did return to center in a surfing sort of way. Imagine doing a floater and landing in the same rail position on the bottom as it was when you hit the lip......probably not going to end like you want. I don't have a curfboard, but I do have a have a Waterborne that I have tightened to the point that it does not return to center. Essentially, since I am street surfing and pumping....no real, noticeable difference as I naturally return to center anyway. If it is loosened, it returns to center by itself. Seeing those Curfboards leaning so little is something I personally would avoid on ldp because my Carver Cx that leans more than Curfboard, doe not lean enough for my practice of tight roundhouse cutbacks and leaning bottom turns.....not to mention the speed that can be generated and smooth ride that remind me of freight train rights at 12 mph. Like Steve would say, just personal preference. I believe a surfer could take any surfskate and benefit. It just comes down to style and preference.

I've been messing around with my curfboard setup since watching this video recently and I think I've found something that will elevate your opinion of the curfboard trucks to another level! De-wedge the front truck.... that's it... Take a wedged riser pad with the tall side towards the front and mount your curfboard truck! Two things this does: > Increases lean (with a subtle reduction in turn) > Strengthens the natural return to centre and increases centre stability. This is something seriously worth your time to try out! Edit: I've now added a rail adapter to the rear! This thing is beautiful and incredibly fluid to ride now! The rail adapter and de-wedge combined kill wiggle pumping and make the board really encourage you to make deep and proper surfing pumps! Edit 2: Curfboard are now selling a wedge kit and show de-wedging the front truck as I've described above.

I bought a set of Curfboad trucks to make a custom set-up and I totally love it. Its a beautifully simple design and gives a totally different feel than bushing or spring based systems. I think your assessment is spot on though in that its not a great system for your only surfskate due to lack of versatility, but it is a great addition to add something unique and fun to the quiver. BTW, a set of Curfboard trucks comes with an angled riser pad for the rear.

Its interesting that while everyone (vid and comments) sees the shorter Curboard Wave SE as an advinced rider’s board, the brand labels it suitable for beginners on its website .. My personal experience : I find the Curfboard not to have enough lean from the very first time I stepped on it .. there is this limit / threshold of movement that the brain is constantly aware of, like a looming danger (which is not a good feeling). Also, the board (in my personal opinion) doesnt have enough ‘grip’ as I have my front foot constantly creeping forward to the point of slipping off on radical turns .. I tried the Curfboard truck on an Arbor Axel Serrat Pro 34 Crosscut and just because of the pronounced concave and the safety of the nose, the board starts to slide almost on its own (and actually feels a bit like a snowboard). Now thats onviously not what I’m going for, but to save my Curfboard, I will : (a) de-wedge front and add a rail adapter (b) choose a new slightly longer board with more pronounced concave and a bit of nose

i just picked up a naish x curfboard as my second curf (clearance for a steal). the new trucks they are shipping out seems way tighter and a little stiff. the swivel doesnt freely move like my older one. if you move it to the left off the ground, it stays in the left position. it doesnt rattle or squeak at all. completely different feel. smoother and less flowy. i prefer the older one.

I think the problem with the rail to rail lean statements is you can swap out urethane parts to get more. I pulled the rubber stops out of my Aquilo, swapped pivot cups and bushings, and now it has amazing lean. I think you should be testing adapters/trucks on the same decks with the same wheels. So many factors involved some info may be wrong.

I test and review boards as they come from companies, not with modifications or upgrades. Of course you could modify and/or upgrad any system. But that's not the point of my reviews.

  • @IamtheWV17

I definitely felt like my experience and your previous feedback didn't quite align. The key difference I could see at the time was wheelbase and risers! I love mine and plan to also try a heavy rear dewedge or a waterborne rail adapter. Edit: After you liked this I thought to update my comment! I've since tried a rear truck dewedge and it's absolutely improved the board tenfold! Still have rail adapter in the mail, really keen to explore the seemingly infinite adjustability made available by having lean independently adjustable! For example having soft adapter bushings with hard truck bushings, limiting steering of the rear wheels. But now the mad scientist in me wants to play around with dewedging the curf-truck 🤔 The design would, in theory, work well with a dewedge? More lean, less turn, and a stronger return to centre?

Another well balanced review guys. Great timing as I just got a Curfboard Wave SE last week. I have a Smoothstar Toledo #77 and I feel the Curfboard has an even more whippy response doing sharp turns and acceleration than the already nimble Smoothstar. I did have to add a 1/2" riser to the rear truck wedge riser to prevent wheel bite. I put a 1/4" riser to the front to level the deck. So much for the low ride which is a pity. Maybe Curfboard could add wheel wells on the rear to future editions of the Wave. At this stage I would say the Smoothstar feels like a board under my feet whereas the Curfboard just feels like wheels attached to my shoes which I like a lot. I've not come close to jack knifing on the Curfboard where I have come very close on the Smoothstar if turning sharply at slower speed. Still early days with the Wave SE but I love having both decks. Re the rattling issue. I wonder if the latest version of the Curfboard truck (which I have on the Wave SE) doesn't rattle on rough terrain as the version you were testing..? I haven't tried mine on a rough surface yet to report. Maybe Curfboard could shed some light on this as they say it's an improved version of their truck. Thanks again for the review.

Everyone should watch Shane Lai review on this board so you can see what is truck capable of. I think that Steve is very used to traditional trucks like Carver or Yow so it is very hard for him to accept anything else. If I would decide to buy Curfboard based on Steve’s video I wouldn’t buy it, but based on Shane review I will.
