In my video on Resident Evil Village, I mentioned I felt that the base game of Village was better than the base game of Resident Evil 7. I recently did another playthrough of Resident Evil 7 to see if this was the case.
As well, in my first video on Resident Evil 7, I didn't cover a few game modes - that being Madhouse, Ethan Must Die, and Jack's 55th Birthday. So in this video, I will cover those modes and give my thoughts.

They got werewolves, lady D is definitely inspired by dracula movies, maybe Frankenstein inspired stuff with heisenberg, and i think monroe could be inspired by the creature of the black lagoon movie. 8 is great, but I replayed 7 a month after beating 8 and it was hella more enjoyable. Now, maybe in 3-5 years, replaying 8 will also be great, but I just don't think 8 quite lives up to its RE4 homage-ing, which is an admirably tall order, but still, gotta call a spade a spade. 7 is unique, wholly its own thing, and paved a new way for RE as a franchise. 8 takes some of that and 4 and does.... something solid but not spectacular. 2 remake> 7> 8 > 3 remake, Capcom on a roll though

    Yeah they say how it combines early RE and RE4's action elements, but in reality its just a superficial implementation. Wasn't really non-linear at all, nor did it feel like RE4 in an authentic way. For example like you said the inventory was so fucking big there was zero challenge in that aspect. Honestly underneath all the vampire lady memes and hype and good graphics, it wasn't that good of a game. Also lacked the true RE music feel. Even in the remakes like RE2 and RE3 their new music pieces are mediocre compared to the classics in RE1,2,3,4.

    Biohazard feels like when you wake up after a nap in an unfamiliar place during the day and when u wake up it's nighttime. It's disorienting for a while. And the fear of being alone with people you don't know or trust is overwhelming. It's claustrophobic. You're trapped and you're weak and at their mercy. It feels like a playable horror movie. Village feels like an action game. Not scary to me at all.

    @Nero Winger didn’t think it was bad just dull. RE6 and Rev1 are my definitions of bad. For the most part it’s just collecting Rose soul fragments or whatever (only played once) and that just wasn’t very exciting to me. Yea. They should have made the ship section WAY scarier than the rest of the games stages. I wanted a more creepy Silent Hill feeling to the Ship Stage and Factory Stage of both games. I wanted the Ship Stage to be longer, to have hiding sections and to have different and scarier monsters. I also wanted Evelin to actually be the creepy little girl we wanted her to be like maybe if the player spends a lot of time afk or spends way too much time alone she spawns and she’s right behind us breathing spelling doom if we try to look similar to Silent Hills PT. Maybe in some sections of the Ship we have to run away from her and you only hear the pitter patter of her hands and feet as she’s upside down on all fours chasing you. I’d also get rid of most if not all the dialog for her and even make the flashbacks of her less childish and in dark creepy parts of the ship. Maybe she leaves us letters and creepily scribbles on the walls/floor with chalk in the flashback. For the Factory I would have wanted to remove the Heisenberg dialogue on the way to the Factory, put up a bunch of fog as the game is getting darker, and have a longer time going through the scary ass dangerous Factory with different creepy monsters before we meet Heisenberg.

    @Helluva Longgood The sequel was better in pretty much ever way for me personally. The gameplay was improved greatly and it fleshed out the characters a lot more and actually managed to get me to care for Sebastian. The first game is just really linear and lacks heart, where the second game touches on themes of trauma, guilt, and redemption.

  • @garyking1986

    @garyking1986

    @Helluva Longgood I found the second game a lot scarier. The monsters were a lot more frightening to me. Also, I understand you may think the story sucked (I disagree but to each their own) but you can’t act like the first game’s story was really any better. The first game has Sebastian be this really dull and boring protagonist who was said to be a reckless detective ruined by alcoholism, but you never really felt that since he seemed so stoic and in control all the time. Evil Within 2 really makes Sebastian feel like the desperate, guilt-ridden fallen hero he was described as in the journals of the first game. Also, in the second game he is an active protagonist who seeks out the the danger to save his daughter. He actually has a personal connection to the narrative and therefore a more concrete motivation, unlike the first game that was a wrong place at the wrong time kind of deal. It’s totally fine if you prefer the first game, the fan base is split pretty 50/50 since both games are so different, but I struggle to say either game “sucked” because ultimately it’s just down to personal preference.

    I love both games but I much prefer 8. The enemy variation is so bad in 7 that it hurts replayibility. Also can't skip cutscenes, that sucks. Eight is more peaks and valleys of scary, with its peaks topping 7. Also Ethan has much more personality and agency in 8 compared to 7 and that did a lot for my enjoyment. Also to answer your question, in the Tragedy of Ethan Winters concept art, yes the developers toyed with bringing back the item box but felt the inventory being more RE4 was the better choice. I personally prefer it this way but its preference.

    Revisiting 7 after playing 8 so many times ruined 7 for me. I’m so used to the action that Village hurdles onto you 24/7, that I couldn’t really get into the vibe 7 was giving. I still give props to 7, though, as Its one of my favorites.

  • @QMMarc

    Great video! I don't miss the item box as much in Village cause it's trying to be RE4, it traded item boxes with the case, tho, that game doesn't have the same amount of ammo drops so it's never an issue so it feels a bit unused, like, I ran with the second upgrade until Heisenberg. RE7 is the better game, I like Village a lot tho, cause i got really good at it, same with RE4 I know where everything is and its fun to speedrun it, not professionally, just, play it really fast, the gun swapping Doom shooting is especially neat, but 7 is just basically as close to RE1Remake as it got in design. And yeah, the boat sucks, but here's the thing about the boat, this one time i stopped playing when i got to the boat for like, a year, and when i came back it dawned on me that the Boat would be great if it was standalone! If it was part of the DLCs, Mia's DLC, you wouldn't lose the momentum as much in the main game (I'm a cave defender, you just, have so much ammo and you can let loose as all the classic RE's does, the environment is poop but i like the game part of it), but yeah, Boat would be good if it was stripped off the main game, cause it is a little entire game on its own. I don't like Ethan Must Die Tho, that was the most frustrating unfun mode I've ever played, it'd be fine but the big guys ruin it, the jenk vomiting always gets me.

  • @QMMarc

    @QMMarc

    3 жыл бұрын

    @Brupcat I don't think village was being 100% RE4 tho', it feels like a mix of a survival horror, unlike RE4 I WAS struggling for ammo for a while. It lacks crowd control, it doesn't have as many onscreen enemies (It used to on tests), the enemies aren't easy to stun either. In many ways the combat feels much less in your control compared to RE4, so even tho it lacks the inventory management, the ammo conservation is still there, which wasn't there in RE4 as much. If I open village right now, with my 50 hour knowledge of it, and play it on hard, i'll still have to struggle for ammo, if I pick up RE4 right now i'll knife the entire game. I would describe Village as what they wanted the player to feel in RE4, overwhelmed, with odds stacked against you, cutscene Leon in the intro was always running, always overwhelmed in the village, but player Leon was knifing crowds, yknow what i mean?

  • @QMMarc

    @Brupcat Idk, for me it only got easy once i beat it and knew what was coming, but first runs with no NG+ on hard is quite challenging compared to Professional, and the Hardest mode is near impossible on a new run, and I say near cause I did it and boy is it so hard that its unfun, bosses are tanky af.

Village is to actiony for my taste. The first real boss fight would have been a final boss in any of the survival horror entries in the series. Village gives me hard RE 4&5 vibes and I was not really into those games.ik hoping maybe they alternate gameplay styles with each new release so that every fan can get a taste of what they like.

RE8 and RE7 are both total masterpieces, but something about 8 really personally vibes with me more. The horror mechanics, the disorientation, the emotion, the variety, the plot, the RE4 throwbacks, the horror book homages Stoker, Shelley, Stephen King, Clive Barker, etc. To me, it definitely had a much more powerful, emotional, and horrifying plot than 7

    RE7 is an unforgettable masterpiece, that kept what made RE RE and branched out. With incredible antagonists and ambiance it was actually scary.. RE8 was good for a "after RE4 Resident Evil game"...tried to please everyone and tried to be more accessible...RE7 kept that survival horror niche to it, but also took risks..RE8 tried to be a more bland - less scary and more welcoming to the fortnight crowd / people that don't play survival horror games. I don't know why Capcom would try to fix something that isn't broke with RE8. Re7 sold over 10 million, I'd be surprised if RE8 ever hits that.

Overall I’d replay 8 before I’d replay 7, just because of gameplay alone, because it felt like 8 was more of a game, 7 was more of a horror experience

The lords are just assholes who hate each other sitting under the same monarch, the bakers were a close knit family torn to shreds by an outside force. And the end of 8 just felt like a slog, hated what happened to Ethan and the epilogue with Rose. Makes the fight in the factory seem pointless considering that in the end Chris did exactly what Ethan risked life and limb to keep from happening- turning his daughter into a bioweapon. But it still one of the best and creepy RE8 is the RE4 kinda sequel we need, it just needs extra Mikami touch but it has everything you need, horror, action, nonsense, story is meh but the rest are awesome and the variety of different NPCs is excellent Bosses are easy but cool and fun, also it has many different places and atmospheres, from Horror in a Castle to the adventure in open era then Cyberpunk feel near the end But Chris last act was kinda meh but its ok cus its way too short. overall, both games are a must and different its like playing RE1 and RE4 sorry for my english

Village has better level design even if the progression isn't well thought out. I think has more good parts to it than RE7, but still suffers the same problems as that game: being too heavily scripted and lacking gameplay variety between playthroughs. @@mtb5431 there was a massive lack of environmental and atmospheric variety too. running around in the Village for those treasures felt like i was playing a fucking MMO/RPG. Zero music, zero changes in the weather or ambiance. The devs trying to insert some pseudo-open-world feel just feels like a case of doing something just to follow a trend or try to make something feel "next-gen". There's even insiders/whistleblower saying they plan to make RE4 semi-open world. FUCK THAT. The semi-open-world aspect of Village was the most tedious, boring, and de-immersive part of the game. Trying to insert some half-assed open-world element into the specifically paced and progressing linear masterpiece RE4 is, would just fuck it up completely.

    @Jon Yu summed it up in a way I never could. Besides it’s boring storyline yeah it’s just a slog getting through. It creates the allusion of open world like Telltale games grant the allusion of choice. Notice how trendy it’s becoming to hate on RE4? Only thing Village has over RE4 is graphics but RE4 blows it away in the gameplay department. RE4’s boss battles are just so unforgettable and creative. Village’s are mostly cutscenes and despite being the only interesting character, Heisenberg’s boss fight might be the biggest shark jumping moment in the series so far. Also RE4’s story is just damn good fun. Village’s is a mystery hinging on a predictable answer (is Chris friend or foe) and a twist that’s kinda forced. Also saw Mia being alive coming from a mile away, just couldn’t predict how obviously lol

    @Ankita Nair I’m talking about all the extra hate RE4 started getting when Village came out. But yeah it really did suck that the fall of Umbrella happened offscreen. That lame bonus chapter in Umbrella Chronicles was hardly a satisfying conclusion. I blame RE5 for ruining the lore though. RE4 kinda stood on its own and didn’t add anything to the existing mythology of the series. RE5 added BS like Spencer wanting to use all the research to achieve godhood and the Wesker children. Sadly a lotta RE fans seem to love all that.
