A Mostly Excellent Remake | Resident Evil 4 Remake

Ойындар

Gloria A Las Plagas! The Resident Evil 4 Remake is (mostly) great.
The Resident Evil 4 remake is the best of the RE-engine era of Resident Evil titles. Resident Evil 4 Remake took many lessons learned from the prior two remakes to heart to deliver an excellent remake.
Resident Evil 4 Remake is not better than the original Resident Evil 4, and I wasn’t expecting it to be. But the Resident Evil 4 Remake turned out about as well as I could imagine in this day and age.

There are several tweaks and adjustments to keep things fresh and keep you guessing within Resident Evil 4 Remake.
While there are some disappointing cuts and the story loses a fair amount of its charm compared to the original, it’s a remake that Capcom should be proud of. With Resident Evil 4 Remake, I’m hoping is the end of Resident Evil remakes and focusing on the future, although the ending seems to indicate otherwise.

I absolutely love the tons of world building they did in such surprisingly subtle ways. - Blue light stuns the Plagas --> That's why the merchant has blue lanterns and doesn't get attacked - If you look at a Ganado with the Biosensor scope you can see that the Plaga itself is located in the neck --> That's why a stab to the neck instantly kills any infected - A note mentions that Plagas can even infect birds --> That's why flashbangs kill crows - There are both an old and a new version of Las Plagas, the old one damaging the brain and being the one administered to the villagers and castle inhibitants, the new one being the one given to a few scientists and Krauser. The old versions pop out of every wound (e.g. after blowing off a Ganado's arm) and are the head-exploding variant seen in villagers, soldiers, etc, the new one giving Krauser a bit more control over his transformation. --> This implies that the old Plagas either entirely hollow out their victim and wear it like a skin suit or take over the nervous system with their tentacles, the Plaga's "main body" (the little bug thing in the injections) residing in the neck, which is also why the suits of armor are so wobbly in their movements. Las Plagas try to control the armor like a human skin suit, but they lack any pre existing joints and muscles, so the Plaga has trouble walking and attacking.

Krauser was like the definition of a textbook one-note character in the original, like he literally just shows up, banters with Leon a bit, then dies while the game pretends like there's some deep history between them without actually fleshing any of it out until after the fact with a side-game. He was just a Wesker goon who took the Plaga pill because it would make him stronger, but now he has his own motivations that actually addresses his history with Leon, even if he is copying some of his homework from Vergil.

The only major thing I disagree with here is krauser, his role in the remake is way more interesting than "triple agent" like in the original, since we already had ada. Here he's Leon's darker reflection. Both of them went through a b.o.w. encounter ending in disaster, while Leon saw the terror of this, krauser saw the absolute power of it all, but this is where he no longer becomes one note. During his boss fight he explicitly says "without power you can't protect anything" not only that he still has all the dog tags of the men he lost in operation javier. While he not might admit outright, he still deeply cared about losing his men, and the betrayal of the u.s government. Also his insistent rookie calling of Leon stops the moment Leon finally deals the killing blow. Almost as if he was imparting a final lesson with his own death. Krauser most likely understood he was wrong in the end. Now you can call all this cliché, but I don't think you could ever call it one note. Especially compared to the original of "all for umbrellas sake" Krauser

One big change you don't have context for. The enemies are Spanish, and they now talk like Spaniards. The accents as well as the general manner of talking (use of "vosotros" instead of "ustedes") and the references to Don Quijote and Pulgarcito. I really appreciated this. I think Krauser was actually an improvement. Instead of being just a thug with no agency that was working with Wesker, we now have a character that makes his own decision to join the Los Illuminados because of what he saw during Operation Javier. The fact that he's now Leon's superior instead of comrade in arms was also a nice change. It now gives them a Master & Apprentice connection. And since Krauser is the one who taught Leon, he knows his true potential. With that in mind, it makes their fight in the ruins not only a battle of ideals, Krauser, wanting power for the sake of self preservation, and Leon gaining power for the sake of protecting others., but also almost a final graduation ceremony for Krauser. He dies knowing that he'll live through the lessons Leon carries onward. There's a respect there that we don't typically see with other RE villains.

The remake provides you with who he his making you feel like you know his character while also having a reason to go after him. Not to mention they show in the very beginning training with leon. Darkside Chronicles was released 4 years after RE4 was released. And judging from the dialogue and the notes found around the checkpoint we’ll be getting a Darkside Chronicles remake, that’ll probably do better in the story writing and give more backstory between leon and krauser and from the sounds of it we’ll actually see how Leon came to join the President and train with Krauser.

Speaking as someone who absolutely *adores* the original like so many others, I have to say that the remake is so good in its own right. It takes everything established in the 2005 game and expands upon it in a way that makes the experience feel different yet familiar for newcomers and veterans alike. That's not to say it completely overshadows the original as there are a few key things, namely the radio banter between Leon and the villains and some small gameplay things like the reload animations not being as cool (I know, I'm a wierdo) and a better Ada voice actor that the 2005 game still does better. In conclusion, Resident Evil 4 (2023) is a tremendous accomplishment in filling the shoes of a game as big as the original. While the original still has its place and is still fun to play, the remake has plenty of changes that make it just as, if not more enjoyable experience. This is an instance where I am more than happy to have eaten the crow in regards to my doubts about this game when it was first announced. I highly recommend it to everyone.

I agree about the lack of boss transformation but with Krauser this time I have felt empathy with his motivation. Not saying it is right but I understand him. One must have gone through a crazy traumatic experience to go that far. In the original he was just like "oh well, I am gonna be the villain because I am that cool" it only worked in 2000s. And the giant statue... I don't see how it would work well if they kept it lol it's in the same level as Jill holding that large gun to fight the last transformation of Nemesis campy.

Krauser’s voice in the original was really great. That knife fight in the first meeting is fantastic. His actual introduction and relationship to Leon is awful in the original. The man just immediately starts spewing exposition and we are not given any idea of who he is and how he knows Leon. He is getting treated like another Ada but we simply did not have any background knowledge or familiarity with him which makes it fall flat. The aspect of playing multiple sides and being unsure with loyalties is done much better by Ada. Umbrella Chronicles does some good in explaining these issues but you shouldn't have to play a side game just to get a basic explanation on who is he. Bad writing is not always meant to be ambiguous. Remake Krauser serves well as a obstacle for Leon to overcome in regards to dealing with the past and trauma.

  • @failurextreme7084
    @failurextreme7084 Жыл бұрын

Hold up, you think Krauser actually making decisions for himself and being driven by his past is a character down grade to just being a pawn of a dude you don't even see in this game? I don't think I can agree with that one chief. They put a lot of work into fleshing Krauser out even changing his relationship with Leon to make the confrontations more poignant kinda like naked snake taking on the boss. You also kept referring to him as deranged but like he's the only one of the bosses who keeps control of himself when he transforms, he only goes as far as he thinks he needs to to beat Leon he is extremely in control. I mean to each their own, you can prefer whichever one you like best, but I really don't understand that point in particular.

Gives me vibes of those gothic, almost early tim burton era of film type scores and it was fantastic. I will say, I wasn't too surprised by the direction they took with his track though, considering that introduction to RE Village showed just how much the current RE Team seem to be a sucker for that Tim Burton aesthetic. Brilliant track overall! I'm also a bit upset he didn't bring up that many of the tracks (not just the Mendez one) are essentially remixes of their original counterparts. Some were done better than others though, but I think the soundtrack in the castle overall was the best in the game, with the island being the weakest. Then again, can't say I was a big fan of the original Island tracks either - threw the distinct tone RE4 was riding on completely out of the window (other than the Regenerator track, which is absolutely phenomenal)

Luis mentioning smokes constantly is partially because it's the codephrase he's supposed to use to identify Wesker's agent, so when Leon doesn't reply the way he's supposed to he just asks Leon to untie him instead. He then asks Ada and she responds as she's supposed to telling Luis she's the agent he's supposed to meet. Also one of the QTE failures made it into the remake as a death animation. If you fail the struggle with Krauser in the knife fight it recreates the death from the original if you failed the mash QTE at the end of the fight. Overall I like the tonal change in this game, it feels more in line with the modern games and also helps it stand out from the original. Like seeing an old cheesy horror classic get a surprisingly good modern remake which doesn't replace the original but they compliment each other (e.g original Evil Dead Vs 2013 Evil Dead)

I'm with some of the other commenters here about how the Krauser stuff is new. But also I want to point out that Ashley and Leon have a much nicer bond, which I can get behind. I actually really disliked some of the sections you mentioned before, with U-3, the level dragon treasure room, the Salzar statue chase, etc. Those sections always felt like padding to me, and drew the game out too much. I like how much cleaner and more logical the new spaces are in this game while also keeping those references and nostalgic visuals for me as an RE4 veteran. Also, the charms are really fun. This time I actually have a reason to play that minigame (to get those charm perks with tokens) instead of just getting hard-to-collect bottle caps for money. I like the perks with the drop rates and discounts a lot more than direct bottle cap money. Overall I personally think the re4 remake overshadows the original, though that's just my preference since I felt the original game from 2005 had too much cheese for my liking. I've always been a bigger fan of surreal horror and darker themes, which this remake clearly has more than the original. Yeah the original was funny and the gameplay was awesome, but the storyline was kinda forgettable and on-offish in some aspects. And also, just being able to move while reloading is an amazing and welcome feature which made me feel so much less stale.

I disagree with you about the music being forgettable. I think they're making the music phenomenal or even surpassing the original, both in the rearrangement and in the new score. In the original, most songs are more subtle, high-tension, creepy, and atmospheric than in the remake. In the remake, they added a lot of new songs that fit what they tried to present for the remake. What I like about the new take on Salaza's theme with the orchestra music reminds me of the Alexia theme from Code Veronica, with the arena that looks like a dancing hall combined with classical waltz music that really fits his royal characteristic in this version. El Gigante and Del Lago have their own themes now, or even the Shooting Gallery music was remixed from the intro, which is better than the original.

I do like how this re4 is more grounded in realism and less cheesy, I do miss the old dialogue but as you stated this is a more moody/ darker remake so to have them in would be silly. I am happy they cut the u3 fight, it seemed redundant and like filler. The voice acting I feel like was perfect apart from Ada, the big cheese, saddler and Ramon having a more Spanish accent was a nice touch. And, of course, the greater the original product the more the new one will be compared to it. This is true of quite literally everything that's ever been remade that had even a small semblance of a following. Is this remake good? Yes, very much so, which good ol' Boulder clearly illustrated. Were there some highly unnecessary changes or cuts? Yes, which, again, he also illustrated. Man you really were upset about them removing that stupid statue chase. That was the DUMBEST thing in the original. There was something about the original RE4 I never liked and it was how different it felt from the previous entries. I think this remake masterfully balances camp and the dark tone to fit the overall style of RE, and more fitting to RE1 and RE2 remakes (RE3R is a joke, so doesn't count) It finally feels like RE4 belongs in the same universe and despite being heavily action oriented, you cannot deny its dark and horror tones. This actually feels like a horror game, which makes me very happy. Fuck the WS Anderson movie lasers, the dumb statue chase and the silly ass Bowser lava room in the castle. I'm so happy they cut that garbage out.

it felt like so many characterisation went completely off, forget ada being playful and confident and teasing the whole time, forget about her doing everything she can to fight wesker's order to kill leon, and rushing to his side to save him time and time again to save him, revealing her present in the village to save him, got caught at least twice because of saving him, goes out of her way just to check up on him because he was infected, almost got killed for that and still expresses concern for his wellbeing right after that, and ada as who she is, wouldn't outright show her hand and pull a gun on the pilot to change course and reveal her betrayal to wesker, in the original, she sent him the subservient version instead of the dominant, and remained inside as a double agent form the company to spy on wesker, that's who ada is, a spy, a double triple or even Quadruple agent playing all sides, she wouldn't risk her life or her mission except for leon, and that's what makes them special to each other

I love the remake tbh, compared to other remakes I think they totally killed it here. I love the expansions and some of the cuts. I love the new knife combat. The only downside, with risk to sounding like a bitch, is it’s difficulty. I feel like it tries to throw as many enemies as the original with 1/10th the ammo and health. I tried it at first on hardcore and had to quit halfway through cause I ran out of ammo completely and couldn’t continue, the first time I’ve ever had to restart an RE game cause of loss of resources. Even in standard, with fully upgraded weapons, on my third run, I was never good on ammo, it seemed like I was always on the brink of running out of some form of ammo. Only now that I have the infinite knife and rpg do I finally have surplus ammo for weapons I no longer have :| I love the new treasure mechanic. The OST is a bit lacking compared to the original. If the original is a 9/10 I give the remake a 7.5/10

I've heard a lot of people complain about 1 headshot or 1 kneeshot not staggering but in a game like this where you have so much more control and movement options compared to the original, they needed to beef up the enemies. You can literally walk backwards while shooting enemies and yeah it won't be as accurate as standing still but that's the trade off, and with most pistols at least that won't be an issue. The game would massively suffer if you could stagger every enemy with a single headshot or kneeshot

I couldn't disagree harder on Krauser. Krauser in the original is a weird nonsequiter cartoon villain. He's just a military guy with a vague connection to Leon. He's completely surface level in RE4, and it's hard to call him intriguing when there's nothing to actually delve into. There's nothing wrong with that inherently. I mean, Mendez is pretty one note too and he's just an obstacle. But the game pretends that Krauser is more important than he is and it just feels weird. Krauser's place in the story for the remake is focused, his relationship to Leon is clear, and there's actual motivation for him outside of his vague connection to Wesker. His position as Leon's mentor adds some weight to both the fight and Leon's character growth. This was only vaguely hinted at in the original with Leon keeping his knife. The remake takes that idea even further by letting you actually USE the knife in gameplay. It's simple, but it's the same narrative trick as keeping Marvin's knife for RE4, and everyone loves that. I was really impressed with Krauser in the remake, but even I'll admit that it's because I didn't expect much out of him consider his lackluster presence in the original. Also he's an absolute MONSTER in Mercenaries in both games, so everybody wins.
