I have a hypothesis, In set 8708 there are two tanks of something, one blue and one red, if the red one is fire then I believe the other one to be water, because if you heat up rock and then cool it down fast the rock will break, this would be a effective way to unalive rockmonsters... Great video!

I've noticed a sort of progression in the vehicles between the 3 waves: In wave 1 they had regular wacky mining vehicles, because the power miners had only just arrived In wave 2 the vehicles all had various weapon add-ons to combat the escalating threat of the rock monsters And in wave 3 the vehicles aren't even for digging anymore, they're purely for neutralizing the -rock- lava monsters

Very astute observation.
26:07 I like to think that the station has it's own number because it actually was another vehicle, but miners had to take it apart and repurpose it into a railway to cross the lava river, suits the general vibe of ingenuity of our miners pretty well!

They kinda shot themselves in the foot making all but one set in the wave over $30. Kids can save up to afford several smaller sets, but it's a lot harder for them to buy bigger sets, so they'll probably just get one. Also it was a pretty bad idea to make two of the sets retail exclusive. Amazing wave regardless though.

@@CheeseyStudios I think it would be really cool if they made a fourth wave where the rock monsters make their own vehicles. There could be a remake of the crystal king where he is turned into a cyborg, with features like razer blades and drill-arms!

Exo-Force takes the crown for me, but Power Miners definitely is among the undisputed top spots.
I remembered these sets very fondly... remembering my mom thinking of the little Rock monsters as walking trash cans. I used to play some rather gruesome games with them; like the mini rocks eating the heads off mini figures and stuff. I was very into Sci Fi like Starship Troopers so I had a rather twisted imagination as a kid. But I frankly enjoyed Power Miners a lot; them and Atlantis are sets i hope Lego brings back some day. Aqua Divers; Agents, I am a Lego fan at heart and Lego never gets old to me.
Power Miners was such a cool aesthetic and I always wanted one as a kid, but I never got any due to the price, but I’m glad you can revisit these

The usage of coffee cups in these sets makes me think that maybe coffee could be an effective and healthier substitute for rock monsters in place of power crystals. Maybe by the end of the mission, rock monsters were able to live alongside regular people on the surface this way.

One of my earliest themes as a kid, my brother got both the larger ones and we'd always play with em together. Missing out on the earlier exo force was well worth it I'd say for such beautiful vehicles, matched only I'd say by galaxy squad.

Great video! I like this wave more after your video. (I didn’t put this wave in my list of ‘buy if I rich’ before watching) My favorite in this wave was used to be the drill in the crystal king set and the mining station. Due to lack of promotion, it is really my first time to know the playing feature of most second wave set. I think extending the cave crusher and make it like a train would be cool. Also, I think it is more a centipede (I don’t know if your country have them).
The extra winch (23:46) on the Titanium Command Rig, though it’s not clear, is supposed to be a zip line. You’re supposed to unravel the winch and hook it to something slightly high up in your room e.g. a bed frame. Make sure the string is taut. Then use the hook piece on top of the Rock Monster cage to slide the cage down the line. I got this set when it came out and vaguely remember seeing some promotional/box art depicting this… Love the videos, keep up the good work on the Minecraft series!

I found your channel a couple months ago and have been really looking forward to the final part in this series. Power Miners was probably one of my favorite themes as a kid. I only ever had the 5/7 of the sets from the first wave (not too hard to guess which ones, lol) but I always really enjoyed the concept. I can't really explain why, though? It was just cool. My favorite was the drill, of course, but all of them were very fun with their play features. I agree that the marketing strategy for this second wave was very strange, because I don't think I really knew about the mining station until later in my life when I found it on Brickset? Like, I feel like if I had saw it as a kid I would remember that huge wheel. It's a shame too because that's such a good set. I also wish we got more playset builds. A rock monster lair or structure in particular would've been nice, since they felt a little underpowered compared to the miners to me. I guess if they eat the crystals they're even, but still. Your videos are very well done and I really enjoy the format in which you go over things, especially talking about the interesting pieces and some of the wider context of these sets. I would love to see your take on some of the themes that in my brain are located right next to this one. Those being Fantasy Era Castle (my favorite theme), 2009 Pirates, and the original Agents line. Although I will admit that some of that stuff is very hindsight nostalgia. I had very few Pirates and Castle when I was a kid, and no Agents. But I always remember looking at them in the catalog and wanting them. I sort of regret getting the Star Wars sets I got at the time because I feel like I would appreciate the original stuff more. My Star Wars sets are all on the chopping block to get sold so I can afford to buy the old stuff I care about now. Sorry for the long, rambley comment. I have a lot of thoughts about this era of Lego. I really enjoy these sorts of complete retrospective videos and would love to see more like this from the channel. Though I do understand they take quite a bit of time! The Minecraft stuff in the middle is also fun too. It's neat to see your world come together on that series. Thank you for making these!

I promise I love long, rambling comments - I do believe that I've written my fair share of them! I would have loved a rock monster lair too, or even just some more small terrain builds with some cool crystal pieces. It would have made the mining aspect of the theme a lot more believable. I definitely want to get to Fantasy Era Castle at some point too. I do happen to have all of the first wave already which is great, since they're nearly impossible to pick up used now haha! The Revisiting series will always be my favorite to make. It's such a joy reliving my childhood by rebuilding these sets. Much, much more to come. Now this takes me back. Power Miners was my favorite theme other than Star Wars. It was so easy to reconfigure or combine them into hulking war machines, I’m not sure I have a single complete one left. My proudest creation as a child was a monster I made by combining the Crystal King, Magma Mech, Claw Digger, the wings from the blue Ninjago Dragon, and the Anti-Vehicle Cannon from one of the Star Wars sets. Also great to see Power Miners used in the Lego DVD film The Adventures of Clutch Powers, with the Thunder Driller and Crystal King making appearances, alongside a rock monster, I believe a baby Sulphurix? Interesting to see how all of these vehicles seemed to have a specific purpose in mind. The ones like theThunder Drill would make the initial tunnels, while others like the Rock Crusher would smooth them to make them thicker and safer. And all had a function that made them capable of both digging and also combating. Nowhere in the sets say what´s the explicit purpose of each one of them is, but the design is so clever and good at implicit storytelling that you can always know what each one is supposed to do by just looking at it´s design and play functions. I really hope they one day try and attempt making more original sets and themes instead of almost only licensing ones.

I finished getting the entire Power Miners collection together last year, and I definitely understand the pain of trying to finish an Underground Mining Station. But it's definitely a great set, and easily one of my favorites in the theme. I agree with the taller tower needing a way to climb it, though, and I was confused as to how someone would even get up there, but I think even the designers might have wondered that too, because if you look at the image on the front of the box and instruction manual cover you'll see one of the miners literally riding the cable car to the top. Precarious, but that's definitely one way to get up there. I was also really confused about that hook on the back of the Titanium Command Rig too, and remained confused until I got hold of the set. I just so happened to get one with the original box, though, and on the back of the box they show that second string being used as a zipline that the monster cage can slide down if the hook is anchored somewhere higher than the rig. It's a strange and specific function, but definitely one they show off even if it's hard to see without the box. So that's what the hook on the back is for. Personally I like the idea of it being a tow hook better, though, since the rig is huge and could reasonably pull several of the standard size vehicles.
@CheeseyStudios

Oh hey! Glad you figured out that extra string's function. Never would have guessed that, but I'm sure it could work quite well like that!

My first exposure to Rock Raiders was the computer game released in '99. After that, I remember asking my father to buy me all the sets we could find. The game was so good for what it was.

I've heard a lot of good things about it. Hope I get the chance to try it sometime!
I really enjoy these retro theme showcases also, you're right, Rock resists Fire.

These videos are a delight to put together. I'm really glad you enjoy them too! Already got three different themes in the works for next year.
Holy shit, thank you for reminding me that exo force exists. I haven't heard/seen anything about it for at least 12 years.

Exo-Force is the bomb. Can't wait to do a few Revisiting videos on those sets!
The exoforce set just brought me back to my childhood, i just got a flashback from that picture.

I'll be doing some Exo-Force videos soon. :) Great theme
Even though I only ever got a single set of this wave and theme all together, it has still stuck with me with fond memories purely because I always played with that head of the crystal king

Love that one so much too. A perfect set!
You should review space police next! Growing up Power Miners and Space Police were my FAVORITES!!
I got the Underground mining station last year for $100 dollars used but complete and in great condition. One of my greatest finds.

That's awesome! Quite the steal honestly
I remember when i first got my titanium drill rig for christmas my first idea was to cannibalize some power functions motors off some other set and then dui upgrade the thing to drill and move with the motors even in upright mode.

Yeah! I bet a number of people haven't seen some of these. This wave was so short-lived and hard to find. Some great stuff though.

@@CheeseyStudios cheesey u probably dont remeber but u told me tips to sort out lego and it worked and having my grey parts sorted i made a really cool throne room so thx for that!
Piwer Miners was definitely my #2 favorite, next to Bionicle! I only owned two of this wave (the cheapest two), and never even saw the other three sets until now! My Walmart was really bad at getting complete lineups of Lego sets...
It might not have been the most popular style but there was something unique that I loved about theses sets

The trilogy is complete! This second wave was defiantly the odd cousin. A couple sets, with few being hard to find. (Also wacky prices) But this wave is totally worth it for the big figs! Great retrospective!

Thank you! Not the perfect wave by any means, but still so glad it exists, too!
Recently got recommended this channel. And this series is really nice! I like the angle of making an overview of an entire line/wave, though I personally think it could be better by going a little more in-depth about the builds and how they build upon old concepts/would have their concepts built upon in the future; but I get if you feel that would make the videos a bit _too_ long for a modern ADD-ridden audience.

Glad you found me! I would love to go longer too, but yeah, these are definitely stretching the limits as it is already haha...

@@CheeseyStudios Who knows? Maybe the videos on individual sets would be a great place to experiment with talking about the evolution of build concepts as it relates to that specific snapshot. Or its own series, which I think would be amazing.
My cousin actually has the Cave Crusher and I LOVED it! Also I like to think that with each wave the Power Miners are getting deeper into the Earth which makes sense with the last set since we’re getting into lava which is what Wave 3’s is about!

I never had the chance to get the Underground Mining Station, but I've never liked how the second tower looks, with the gigantic gear. But I think seeing it in motion has sold me on it!

Something funny to me is that even tho I think I owned one of the wave 3 sets I had no idea the big rock monsters existed. I was a big Ninjago kid tho and in season 1 there's an episode where seeks out Garmadon for help, and they get into a brief fight in which Garmadon orders some "mud monsters" to converge and smother Wu. Those mud monsters look just like the big rock monsters! They were always such a random thing in the show to me so it's interesting to know where that asset is from pretty much
