    I was a network admin from 1999-2008 but I left for the oilfield for more money which is now defunct I’m trying to get back into it as a career, I’m a intermediate python programmer and have kept up with my networking Linux and programming skills on the side. What certs and what technologies are the fastest way for me to get back into IT even if it’s just a help desk position... ccna, aws, python? I’m looking to get a job quick and grow my connections and skills then. Thank you and your channel has helped me a lot get back in the saddle

    Great session! What should someone with a diverse skill set write in their summary? I know focus is important, but what is the most important thing to focus on, is it current experience, interests or desired career? Also I'm having a hard time defining my current role since I'm covering many spots. PS The company joined a multinational group and changed its name (but still uses the old name with some clients for diplomatic reasons), so my previous titles will look like they were at a different company in LinkedIn if I separate them.

    First time seeing you take a drink of "not coffee " - ironically it was, as I was bottoms up on my ice coffee. Content is also interesting in a - chore flagged for next week - sort of way. Critiques are well presented, democratic, and strong -maybe even uncompromising. My own profile is currently week, I only started looking at Linkd-In last year. Always had it mentally grouped with FaceBook and such.

    I say if you have certs and can prove you know your certs you can get a job might take a bit with zero experience but it's possible. I have Security+ and CCENT and managed to get a tier II help desk job with zero IT experience (worked at walmart prior) then within 2 months of the tier II help desk a network admin job opened up. I didn't think I would get it as I only have a CCENT but they asked me basic networking questions around 10 and I answered most correct so they said they could train me on everything else. Keep in mind I went from making 35k/year at walmart to over 60k a year as a network admin all within 3 months. Zero IT exp when I worked at walmart outside of labs and certs.

    IMHO - Yes. Not so much for getting a job (although doesn't hurt), but for building up your professional network of contacts. Helps in letting them know what you're doing and you know what they're doing. This allows you to "reach out" and potentially help each other.

    I actually deleted my LinkedIn account (early 2022) as I found it some completely, utterly useless! But hey, I took a degree in art (which is basically worthless). I didn't get a single bit of useful contact through LinkedIn in the 12 ish years I had an account. I just got to the point where I refused to look for work. I'm disabled and am seriously restricted in what I can do, and none of those things I am in any way qualified to do, so I just, gave, up! I've been actively employed for 1 year of my life!

  • @Morristown337

    @Morristown337

    3 жыл бұрын

    You would be amazed about how many of us IT guys have a background in automotive and are running from it to get into IT. Automotive is fine... but if business is slow we are probably not going to get paid as it pays on labor hours per job not actual hours. A lot of working in the hot summer heat and very cold below freezing winter weather. Lots of mashed fingers scrapes and bruises. And a lot of bucket of worms jobs, that where unlike IT. there is not a lot of resources when its something specif to one specific year and make model car. We often have to ask for help just simply because some parts are too heavy to deal with. A lot of cars rust out and bolts break and we end up stuck in horrible situations when bolt heads break off or the customer only wants to pay for the bare minimum when we gotta break stuff to get to the part we are changing on old rust buckets. Japanese cars are great but very tight and compact and if you don't have very tiny hands and fingers its hard to get to places. We are ALWAYS buying tools, extensions, etc. All and all working on a computer is just easier then cars. Every car is different and most computers are standardized and similar. If you can work on a dell then you can work on an hp. In my class there was quite a few coming from the auto industry.
