Reviewing the (Almost) Cheapest Welder on Amazon: DekoPro Welder Review

Ғылым және технология

Deko Pro Welder Review. Warning: Lots of Welding and Arc Shots! I ran this welder through it's paces with 3 types of rod on 120 and 240 volt power. It's amazing that you can order such a cheap inverter stick welder online. If you're a beginner looking to get into Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), also known as stick welding, or you're looking to add a portable option, check out this review to see if the DekoPro welder is for you!

    I bought one of these (mine is branded "Merrco") recently and immediately opened it up before using it, to inspect it for badly soldered joints and any other obvious assembly flaws. The only thing I noticed was a small piece of the circuit board was broken off at one of the corners; perhaps it fell during assembly and chipped off. I put it back together and began using it, and I am very impressed. It seems almost counterintuitive to have 120 amps coming out of this little box, welding 2" x 2"x 1/4" angle iron with ease. All of my welding was previously done with a Lincoln AC-225 (before it was stolen), and so far this little thing is holding its end quite nicely. The only thing I don't like about it so far is the location of the power switch; it's at the back of the machine and under the power cord, which feels a bit clumsy to reach, especially with gloves on. One thing I would recommend, is to not have it running close to where you're grinding or cutting, because the cooling fan has a strong suction that can pull sparks or the the electrically conductive dust from abrasive wheels into the machine. That can possibly cause short circuits and premature failure of the machine. I would've incorporated air filtration in the air intake side of a machine like this to reduce that risk.

  • @anthonypelletier8978

    @anthonypelletier8978

    2 жыл бұрын

    There are actually inserts that you can get for fans this size that have a filter on them! They are typically used for computer cases to keep out dust, but I wouldn't put it past it working on here.

    Great video and thank you. I have a Dekopro 160 amp Smart Panel and it burns 1/8" Lincoln 6011 very well, but , heads up, it absolutely sucks with 1/8" Forney 6011. At the same welder settings as the Lincoln rods, the Forney quickly burn back, making it very difficult to maintain an arc. My video suggestion is to compare different brands of the same type of rod (for example 6011) to observe how they burn with your Dekopro.

    Have similar machine (different paint scheme) and you will notice that the power-in cord is marked 14 ga (on mine). So real limit on how many amps you can feed into the machine from a wall outlet. Once you step up to 240v the input wire size is much less of an issue. I measured the welding cables and they came out at #5 wire. Helps with weight and stiffness, but again, an ampacity limiter. I'm sure it's OK for what's inside the box. But wouldn't try to use with a big transformer machine ... So my heavy leads are TWECO connected and the light machine leads are Dinse connected. Can't swap, which is good. Great thing about these is how light and portable :-)

    Hi Tim, it's good there's You Tube and people like you testing tools and welders, as most of these cheap Chinese welders are Way overrated and their specs are not what they claim !! I bought a inverter welder from EBay claiming 315 amps on 380vac, and on 240vac. The max I could get with the digital meter set at 315amps, was a measly 127 amps wide open !! Measured with a Fluke DC Clampmeter. It welds great for 1/8" 6011, 6010 and 7018, EXCEPT 7018 overhead. As It needs a little more Oomph like 10 amps more because holding at tight arc will snuff out the arc. So I had to finish the overhead with my. Pow Con 400 smt. So my cheap welder isn't worth much when I can't finish a weld with it. Great Video. Thanks

    Hey, Tim. Great series of tutorial videos - I appreciate your knowledge and presentation, it makes the important points easy to understand. A simple question - All of my 240 devices in my shop run systems like timers, circuit boards, lights, etc. which require the plugs to have a neutral (so it can pull a 120V leg off internally) so my sockets are all 4-cavity. I see that this welder has a three-pronged plug. Is it made so that it matches the two hot prongs and the ground prong on the 4-cavity socket (i. e. just ignoring the neutral connection in the socket) or will I need to make a jumper connector? I guess I could add a separate 3 cavity socket next to my existing 240 socket - I'd have to look at the relative cost, I guess? Sorry for the basic question but it would help me to know. Thanks Bb

    It’s a great question. The outlets have different spacing, so it won’t fit. I’ve made adapters for all of them over the years. If you’re only going to use the welder on that plug, the cheapest thing to do is just cut the plug off the welder and install the type you need from the hardware store.

    Hey Brice. The plug that has 4 pins with 120/240 is called a NEMA 14-50. I attached a NEMA 14-50 plug with the neutral pin removed on the end of a 3 conductor 10AWG (for 30A) or use 8AWG (for 50A or for longer distances), and on the end put a NEMA 6-50 receptacle (like most welders use). The 14-50 plug with the neutral pin removed will plug into a dryer receptacle or stove receptacle, and is likely what you have. I made my cable about 25', and I used the 600V flexible SOOW cable only because it's insulation is thicker and less likely for something to cut into and reach the copper conductors. You can use the thinner 300V SJOOW cable. I also purchased a relatively cheap 20' 6-50 extension cable on Amazon to extend my cable if needed. With the two cables i can go to anyone's home and plug in my welder and run it at full power. I'll also use the same cables for my future electric car.

    Yeah, it will weld 1/4" just fine, as long as it's plugged into a 220 volt outlet. It would be a bit of a stretch on 110. My setup for this would depend on the geometry and how clean you can get it, but I'd probably run a 1/8" 7018 at 130-140 amps.

    For the driveway/garage welder, especially with the Red Chinese welders I'd recommend 6011 and 7014 because both rods run AC/DC +/-. Many inexpensive and cheap welders don't produce the DC Open Circuit Voltage (OCV) to run 6010 properly, if at all, but will happily burn the essentially equivalent 6011. Many are AC only which rules out 6010 and 7018, and the 7018AC isn't all that they claim. The 7014 is also an iron rod and essentially equivalent to 7018 but runs nicer, smoother, and does not require a rod oven, just keep the rods dry. That being said most contract and structural work where the rods are specified by code or the engineer will spec 7018 which will require a rod oven. Now I will admit my prejudices, I learned on 1/8" DC (only) stick with a pickup mounted Lincoln motor drive and 3 phase coffee grinders after school at the local welding shop and now that I'm retired I decided to pick it up again because building things in my hands is so satisfying. I've never used any rods other than 1/8" because that is all the shop used (and where I get my rods now). I also picked up an 180amp (240v) transformer MIG using 0.035 flux because I weld out in the driveway at the end of a 33 foot 6 gauge cord but I don't know what I think about it. Perhaps I just prefer my vintage AC only (generic) Thunderbolt and Century 230/140 AC/DC which are both transformers. Thank you for your series of videos...

My welds totally hit or miss and a lot of it is not knowing enough about all the details of actually knowing how to weld. If I wanted to use this welder on 110v to reattach a bracket to a lawn mower deck what would you suggest for rod type and size?
