The 'stretched out' pear looks like an older version of a Conference pear, which is pretty common in the UK. I used to live in a part of south east London that was famous for its pear orchards back in Georgian and Victorian times. I had a very old pear tree in my garden that used to produce fruits very like the one you have. Modern varieties of Conference pears tend to be smaller and slightly more bulbous.

Conference pears weren't bulbous the last time I looked - still long and narrow. I have horrible memories of conference pears from my parents' trees. They were always dry and tasteless. Having watched this, maybe I should try one again 😂. Rocha pears are really nice, so I never choose conference pears over them.

@@rld1982 The pears that came from my tree were wonderful. Agreed that they weren't as juicy as some other pears, but they had masses of flavour. However, the difference might be because the tree was so tall, the only way you could collect the pears was when they were so ripe they'd fall off the tress.

Abate Fetel is my favorite pear, and if you're ever in Montpelier, Vermont (not France, that has two "L" s in it) you might find it for sale at Hunger Mountain Co-op. However, you're more likely to find Red or Green Anjou pears, or Asian Pears... Depending on the season though, you can find more then 12 varieties of apples at any point in time, which switch out as the season progresses. I have actually seen a surprising number of fruits that have been mentioned here too. So, occasionally when he brings up a "rare" fruit, I can actually say I've seen it before... And I have never lived outside of Vermont. 🤣

@@BJCMXY I had the blessing of being able to get some Abate Fetel pears from a grocery store in Maryland called Mom's Organic Market. They were distributed by Awe Sum Organics. Abate Fetels, compared to other pears I've had, taste very sweet, with some floral notes and a hint of citrus, just barely noticeable. The skin is thick but not tough like Red D'Anjou can be. The closest pear I've had to it in terms of flavor is Packham's Triumph that was sold as 'Autumn Bartlett' (it is not a Bartlett). The differences are that Packham's triumph is a bit more citrusy, a bit less sweet, and has more juice. But the pears were still similar flavor-wise. PT has a bumpy appearance. What I like about AF best is that the pears are very forgiving when ripening them. If they are eaten a bit early, they will be like a Bosc pear, but with the Abate Fetel flavor. And if eaten when ripe, they have a firm, very sweet, moderately juicy flesh. I saved some of the seeds and am growing my own seedlings to see what comes of them.

The long ones (Abate Fetel) are actually very common autumn pears in most of Europe, they store well, so they are available in Autumn and Winter here. As of the Williams pear, it's a summer pear, meaning the one you tried certainly wasn't from here, which would explain the flavor being meh. When in season, it's amazing though.

It might be hard finding the primo quality that was available to me at the time as we normally bought our fruits from a farmer's booth directly. As a kid I'd bother my mom to buy a big 5 pound bag... it'd be gone in 3 days haha! I think the ones you find in their supermarkets that are at that level are super expensive. Just like anywhere else it's best to buy directly from the source to avoid huge markups

Hi Jared. The long pear is Pyrus communis "" Conference ", variety from UK, 1894. One of the 2 most sold pear types sold in the Netherlands to eat out of hand. The other one is Pyrus communis "" Doyenne du Comice"' ; originates from France, 1849.Another one is Pyrus communis "' Gieser Wildeman" mostly used in cooking, especially at christmas time. The peaar is poached in red wine with cinnamon and some other spices.Originates from the Netherlands, fairly dry, not nice to eat out of hand. You should visit the Netherlands and try some om the local fruit, lots of very tasty apples, soft fruit, etc.really enjoy your channel Jared, learned a lot from watching the episodes. Thanks for sharing.Keep up the great work you do & keeping us informed about all of the fruits from around the world.

I didn't know Portugal was much of a pear country, I do know however that we here in the Netherlands grow a lot of apple and pear varieties, the most notable thing is that we have "stoofpeertjes" which is a hot sweet stewed pear dish served during the holidays as a side-dish. It's similar to the Portugese dish because we stew the pears in red wine, pink sugar, cinnamon and cloves. Once done they're so soft that they melt in your mouth.. Most commonly we use "Gieser Wildeman" pears (these are small, bulbous, red/brown and very very hard and dry), they're sold pretty much exclusively for making this dish.

I think it's pretty crazy that you said the Williams pear didn't have the best flavor, because I think that's the kind I ate most recently from a tree growing in someone's yard on the roadside, and I swear it was the best pair I ever ate. I'm guessing that that was the variety, but I could be wrong. It's just hard to imagine the other pears you have tasted better than the one that I ate, because it was incredibly delicious, and supremely ripe.

I'd agree, the one he had much have been a very poor example because I regularly eat all these varieties and more, and the Williams tends to be one of the best. It's also the one that tastes most like pear flavouring to me, it has that exact sweet aromatic chemical taste of a pear drop (I believe the chemical responsible for that is called pear ester).

The reason you have so many pears is because it's the pears harvest season locally, unlike the US they dont import fruit and veg from all over the world all year long and have all the fruits and veg available all year long. Just like the rest of the mediterranean countries people buy what is in season locally hence all fruit/veg are ripe and ready to eat.

They ripened much earlier than any other pear from this area and if left to fall in the yard drew an extreme amount of bee's, hornets, and wasps, there however was not much danger of being stung because all of them seemed quite drunk.

It's kind of interesting that you treated the concept of cooking pears in port and spices as an exotic thing, it's a pretty common thing to make here in the New England area, especially around the holidays, it never occurred to me that it wasn't common in the rest of the US. Also, the idea of there being a lot of different varieties of pears being a mind blowing idea seems surprising to me too, since where I am you can find a few different varieties in the supermarket, just like you can with apples. My main problem with any type of supermarket pear though is that they are usually overly meally. Also also, it didn't really occur to me until after writing this that we have a relatively large Portuguese community over in my part of the US, so that probably explains things, well other than supermarket pears being meally, lol. We don't have those long pears tho, lol.

Who does not LOVE pears. To me they're the most refreshing fruits, love them all and specially the Northeast Asian pears that have the shape of apples. They have a unique taste and very crispy.

It’s cool that your in Portugal! Some other fruits that I’ve seen that are pretty popular over there are apples, citrus, and passion fruit! Also, if you enjoy soda I’d recommend the pineapple flavored sumol!

The Williams is a common commercial variety. Yours was a bit over ripe but they don't have a lot flavor even when slightly greener. The Seli pear looks and sounds like a Beurre Bosc, I have seen some Beurre Bosc elongated like that though.

I'd say that the Williams pear is more famous, I usually associate it with the brandy that puts the entire thing in the bottle.

Xcellent review. I live n Oklahoma n my neighbor has a pear tree n her backyard n she dont care for the fruit. After our first frost, mid October, the tree drops em. That's when I get em soft, yellow with brown specks, n juicy n xtra delicious.. Not sure of the variety...
