Reviewing Persona 3

personally i think i am the chariot arcana b/c i move v fast
We're tackling all of Persona's mainline games - you might've seen the first video on 1, Innocent Sin, and Eternal Punishment. After being locked in bad media experiencer jail for not immediately classing EP as "peak fiction" I was tasked with covering the rest of the games. Turns out Persona 3's pretty fun - they really made an effort, and boy howdy it shows. Had a lot of fun writing about this one, even if I had a few criticisms, because it was a journey like no other.

@@Pie_The_Man Yeah, there's something powerful at the core of Kawakami's confidant -- a teacher who feels she failed her student, who is crushed by the weight of her job and has lost sight of how important it is because she's undervalued and being taken advantage of. Maybe it's just because I'm married to a teacher, but there were points where the maid costume faded into the background and you could really see the pain she was going through, despite her best intentions being buried deep down... ... And it's constantly undercut by dumb maid jokes and that she's open to dating not just a high schooler, but one of her own students. Especially after the game already engages with that dynamic to some degree with Kamoshida, it feels really gross.

  • @snw9729

    @snw9729

    2 жыл бұрын

@@B-019 Not saying that dynamic is at all okay in real life, but I very much appreciated the fact that I could romance Kawakami, and chose to do so in my first run of the game. I found myself really caring about her by the end of it in spite of the overplayed gag, and while Joker might be 17, I'm closer in age to Kawakami than I am to him, with problems more similar to her, so that felt a more organic option to me as a player than say, Ann or Makoto. In addition, there's no sort of despicable abuse of power imbalance like there is in Kamoshida's case; if anything, Joker is far more in control of the situation than she is. Just to be crystal clear, none of my above justification applies to the real world, where this should absolutely never happen. There's definitely something to be said for the sort of dissonance this creates between player and main character once you start dragging real world ethics into it, but in this fictional context I think it's rather inoffensive.

The whole MC death = game over thing is a carry over from SMT where it makes a little more sense. If your human characters die, well your demons just aren't all that faithful. There is also adds to the more oppressive atmosphere. I think looking at the PS2 megaten games as a whole puts a lot of ideas, for better or worse, into perspective. While the P1/2 era are closer to the older games, though they and Devil Summoner were pretty experimental.

I never found a persona 3 critique where I've agreed with 90% of the information brought up, I completely agree that yukari is one of the best persona written characters, I love that the characters grow without your interference, they all change by talking or interacting with each other. (I dont agree with the fuuka bit I think she was more to her especially in her social link.) And koromaru does a big save later on and it's not attached to an annoying quirky talking animal like in the future games. Even if I do like morgana. It just makes you appreciate that it's just a normal dog with no major identity issues. But yeah I honestly think this is the best persona 3 video I've seen in a long while that I wanna share with my friends and loved ones, sounds corny I know but it puts feelings into words I honestly couldn't find myself.

Yeah whenever i see Kuro i just wanna hug him and say "who's a good boy" like Kanji... But Morgana I'm fine with her as a cat but giving her ability to speak and especially an attitude makes me -___- i don't think even kanji would like him. And yeah about Yukari she's the most realistic char in the game for me and it was awful how the fandom hated her in "The Answer" basically because they don't understand her that she's going through the stages of grief. When i first played the Answer and heard the first few dialogues of Yukari i already suspected that she's Grieving. Because i was like that too when my grandma died I didn't care about anyone I even wished my mom died instead because i hated her that time. So yukari being blinded and focused on the MC's death makes sense adding the fact that she's the romance canon of the story.

I finished the game yesterday after 90 hr (my first persona franchise game). The absolute concept (in my pov) is the balance between pain and joy, for the characters and the player, especially during the last days of grinding and the gloomy athmosphere, the endless running in tartarus' maze. It s all about the reward and frustration you receive. And man did I got frustrated, and happy. I know it is a basic element in rpg, but in P3, it felt so demanding. And the clock is always ticking. You can always relate to at least one or a few characters. Family crisis, physical wound, parents divorcing, parents dying, or just feeling there is no place for you in life, an so on. Sure choices in SL are a bit cheesy but I felt moved by many situations (the old couple and their deceased son). Aegis is maybe the best metaphore/analogy how this game changes you, making you more human, aware of your surroundings. And that's a lesson, for me in the least. And i'm an old man of 44 yo. A game that is as wonderful as it is tiring. Amazing.

That's why he can have no problem shooting himself. But since you're playing a game you're all gung-ho about it. Also explains a bit of why it takes you so long to get some S.links with the people you live with. You're creepy, you've accepted death and are p much a better fighter than the others doing it way longer.

Locking QoL features like the Compendium on an archaic game like P3 does not bode well imo. The story told is a great epilogue to the Journey, but the way they locked it under Hard mode only was a slap to the face of players who just wanted to know the conclusion to the story.

The problem is it does not portray the group dynamics in a realistic way. The big flashy fight sequence comes first, the plot and the reasoning behind it comes later. It makes everyone act OOC, and removal of compendium is not "interesting." It just makes you do more busywork for the same result. Plus the plot of tne answer is pretty fucked up with it giving the answers to question that were never asked/or were apparent on their own. Metis is pretty much useless exposition machine and more of a gameplay/utility character. Not to mention it brought a lot of retcons into the P3.

I forgive most of the mechanical issues of P3 (combat overrepetition, all SLs being 10 ranks make them feel dragged on, etc) because it was the first time they were doing that structure with the series, but I'm less forgiving with the other entries because they barely do anything to improve them, P4 dungeons are almost a copy and paste of tartarus with very slight changes, P5 palaces improves on some stuff but bring out new issues, and the social links still feel dragged on in the future games. Another thing that imo the future games downgraded was the character arcs, in P3 all the main cast get a full character arc in the main story, tying to the themes of the game, their social links (even for the males in P3P) are about minor stuff that's still related to the main themes. P4 and P5 have the cast reach "an awakening" a bit after you meet them and they don't change anymore through the plot, their social link arc doesn't affect how they act in the main story.

Part of the reason why I really liked P3 so much but feel sort of ambivalent to P4 and P5 story wise is that P3 just had a cast of characters that felt grounded and you can relate to a lot of the things that they go through. It's also about the only RPG i've played where everybody isn't just become friends with each other/ever become friends after a couple of hours. Throughout this whole game, most of these guys are just sort of working together out of necessity with you being the central link that ties them all together and it's only near the end where everybody starts to warm up to each other.

P3 is my favorite game (probably) of all time. Definitely not the _best_ game I've ever played but certainly the one that still resonates the strongest with me even though it's been 12 years since I've completed it. Having said that, this was a great (and darn entertaining) critique with fair points across the board. Something I'd like to show P Studio if they would ever consider remaking this game. Liked and subscribed. Glad this got recommended to me.

You won me over when you said "There'll be piss;" that single handedly convinced me to actually watch the entire video. Personally, my favorite Persona game is Persona 4. It wasn't my first SMT game, that was actually Digital Devil Saga, followed by Nocturne, then 3, then Innocent Sin, and then finally 4. I find that 3 is the most "accepted" by the oldschool SMT crowd due to still embracing the darker themes of the mainline games, but I it's that lightness and SIM-aspect that makes the Persona games delightful.

Hey! So I agree with pretty much everything EXCEPT the final boss. You must have been overleveled for it or extremely lucky, because it's somewhat *infamous* for having the exact opposite reaction and being a painful roadblock to players. It has 14 phases with cycling resistances, attacks, and strategies, and is well over an hour or combat. The last, most dangerous form has 4 times the health and takes half damage from everything, and can infamously charm you into full-healing it. It has guides devoted to how to deal with it's different phases and attacks, and is considered the best final boss in the Persona series for it's complexity and difficulty.

To be honest i was writing about P3 to P5 retrospective and what lesson is carried along the way, even wanting to make a video on that only that i am still learning to edit from the very basics since windows movie maker sucked balls but i can only use that LOL. Nice one Kbash, i hope Persona 3 gets a Remaster/Remake because the different version have different systems

I wouldn't mind if they just kept it as an option like how DQ11 has it. That games honestly a treasure trove of good QoL improvements that I wish more JRPG's would follow along with the original Bravely Default.

Junpei's character development really really shines in the audio drama cd's and manga (even the non canon ones but still Atlus licensed and approved) In the canon manga I love how he basically committed burn my bread to Takaya after draging him in the pavement lmao, then broke the bones of jin's persona. P3mc had to subdue him with Thanatos. In the non canon anthology mangas. (Both P3MC and FeMC versions) His perspective during the early game to mid game are really good and shines a light that he is not dumb as the others sees him as. Also i love/hate how he pulled a really F***** up depressing prank in front of the SEES members, the chapter is still untranslated till this day but even with my meager japanese reading skills and common sense, i can still piece it out. For short It was just a normal night raiding tartarus, P3MC, Yukari and Akihiko, Junpei present. He *"accidentally"* pulls out an actual *"gun"* and proceeds to shoot himself in the head blasting fake blood all over and then pulled out the PSYCHE! IT'S JUST A PRANK BRO card. On one hand its hilarious On the other hand it's F***ed up and depressing, he basically did that to gauge the team if they see him as someone important and worthwhile. (They took his inferiority complex and self loathing to the next level oof) In the Audio Drama cd's (Audio Drama cd chapters range from dubiously implied that it happened canonically to straight up alternate universes) It's just so wholesome and a bit depressing (It's P3 lmao of course its a bit depressing) Chidori gets a bit of screen time here and there so that's good. Also in the AU Mitsuru centered chapter where SEES basically got their butts handed with ikutsuki's remaining unknown lackeys in the kirijo mansion It is implied that chidori joins SEES as her struggles about death and attachment got solved early on before Takaya and Jin got to her again. Special mention: the numerous gag 4 panel strips. Nothing special psyche!

You know, I've never really felt like the Answer undoes what Jesus-kun did at the end of the Journey. Erebus is an evil that _will_ always exist, like you said, but that doesn't mean you stop fighting. SEES is essentially acting in the hopes that one day, Jesus-kun will be able to pass on. That's, how I've always rationalized it. I seriously hope they're not trying to say he'll come back one day...
