    12:40 Interesting thing about the 18 round magazines. If I remember when I played this, the game was set in 1967 and 1968. It was around this time that the m16 was having serious issues with feeding and reliability. The magazines that were issued were meant to be single use and disposable, but a lot of soldiers were ordered to save their magazines and reuse them. This caused a lot of reliability issues and soldier started loading only 18 rounds instead of the full 20. It's neat little detail that shows these developers did their homework. The reliability issues were eventually solved when a guy came to inspect the m16s and find out what was wrong with them. It was eventually determined to be sabotage from the the Springfield Ordnance Co, who were responsible for manufacturing the M14s. They issued the m16s with no cleaning kits, tested them with high grade ammunition only for soldiers to use low grade ammunition in the field and the guns had no chrome lining in the barrels which resulted in bullet casings swelling in the chamber causing whats known as, "failure to extract". This got a lot of men killed as a result. And all because Springfield was biased toward keeping the M14 in service over the M16. The issues were eventually solved and the M16A1 was eventually adopted and sent out in 1969 with new units and barrel replacements to fix the rifles for older units.

    @@Serygalacaffeine it marked the end of Springfield Ordnance Co as the sole supplier of weapons for the US military. These same people also screwed the US out of adopting the FN FAL as the primary service weapon, cause they were tied up in tradition over what was best for the soldiers. The history on it is pretty deep. It goes back to when the Germans adopted the STG 44. What made the weapon so revolutionary was the 7.92×33 kurz round that it fired. It was a shortened version of the 8mm mauser and it was perfect for close quarters battle. After WWII ended every nation wanted to do something similar and adopt an intermediate cartridge. Britain came up with the .280 British round (shortened version of the .303 British) the Soviets adopted the 7.62×39mm (shortened version of their 7.62×54R). The .280 british was favored by most of NATO and they wanted to adopt it across all nations. But the US was tied up in tradition. Our version of a shortened round was the 7.62×51mm which is barely shorter than our 30-06 round (7.62×63mm). We wanted an American rifle and we adopted the M14, (basically a better version of the M1 Garand). And not only did we refuse to adopt the FAL but we also forced the rest of NATO to adopt the 7.62×51mm. Which put all of NATO at a huge disadvantage cause the 7.62×51mm is still a full powered round and has high muzzle climb which makes is hard to shoot in full auto even in FALs, while our enemies were using AKs and the 7.62×39mm (a true intermediate round), our troops were getting outgunned in every firefight as a result. Springfield Ordnance Co did nothing but hold us back. The Colonel who was in charge of the weapons program was fired and the company was shut down. Now military weapon contracts are mostly from private companies like Armalite, Sig Sauer, Smith & Wesson, Colt, Heckler & Koch, Hershtal and many others. The M16 replaced the M14 in 1970 as the official rifle for the US military and we've been using it ever since.

    @@Nickallsopp92 You seem to really know your stuff. What is your take on the army adopting the XM5 now but flat out dropping everything during the OICW program?

  • @Nickallsopp92

    @Nickallsopp92

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@Serygalacaffeine the OICW program I can understand, the grenade launcher they were developing for it was heavier than hell and wasn't all that reliable. Even though they dropped the grenade launcher, the rifle still had promise which led to the XM8 program and again I can see why they eventually dropped it too. The XM8 operated very similar to the HK G36 which was already being battle tested and there was nothing either rifle could do that the M4 couldn't do better. At the end of the day, its better to just stick with what we already have than waste money to adopt another weapon system that's equal to our current rifle. As far the new SIG NGSW program goes I'm kinda torn. I can see the benefits of the new rifle and cartridge but it also feels like history is about to rhyme with this new weapon system. We're dropping an intermediate cartridge for a new full power cartridge (6.8×51mm) yet again, only this time the new guns are gonna have serious firepower cause the new cartridge is said to be able to push 80,000 psi which is great for defeating body armor, but im also betting that recoil is gonna be a bitch. Everyone who has shot it has compared its recoil to the AR10 chambered in .308 or 6.5 Creedmoor. But all the testing being done right now isn't even using the new hybrid cartridge which means no one has felt what 80k psi feels like in the new platform. Not to mention pressures like that will wear out the barrel much faster than the standard 50k psi most rifle can generate. From what I hear, the elite infantry and special forces are the only ones who are gonna be issued the new rifle for now, that's Rangers, air assault infantry, Navy Seals, and marine force recon. Everyone else is gonna stick to the m4 for the time being. But honestly I'm not sure if it's gonna work any better than OICW, XM8, or even the FN Scar programs. I do like the new light machine gun in the program though.

    I remember playing this as a kid and figuring out that if you snap into your binoculars and shoot at the same time no matter what you’re holding the bullet will land exactly at a specific point on the binoculars each time. Sounds annoying but it had some practicality especially once you really got good at it. I also figured out that sprinting through spring loaded traps would safely get you through them because the game could activate the traps quick enough

Also the spacial sound was totally new and ahead of its time. One thing that stood out was the soundtrack. The music sounded perfect period but was brand new. I've played BF and COD, but the best balanced map I've ever played in a tactical multiplayer shooter is "stream" in Vietcong. Capture the flag was the thing and a full server with 2x16 players was some tough business. Thanks for bringing the memories back.

The conflict games, specifically Vietnam were so good and they played so well Edit: why there aren't many made today; A) there are many flavours of names used by the US troops that wouldn't get past the quality control censors B ) it's a time period the us doesn't really want to talk about from losing the war to all the political and social trouble caused by the draft and the war. C) it's very hard to make your dudes look like the good guys when it's well known they would open fire on innocent civvies. Don't get me wrong, I want more nam games, the music, feel and atmosphere are my favourite, I was brought up with Bad Company and Credence Clearwater Revival so the music brigs back some good memories

    There was a problem with feeding if you loaded the full 20 rounds, that's why it was sometimes underloaded to improve reliability. Some guys load 28 rounds to this day, though I've never had any issues with 30 round mags

    In Vietcong, the reason the M16 had a 18 round clip instead of the regular twenty is actually quite interesting. U.S. Special forces would only load 18 rounds so the weapon wouldn't jam. Another reason to love the game. It was historically accurate.

    I really liked Vietcong and wished it was longer. Surprisingly that game has alot of info and facts about Vietnam during the war and also description of MacV and how they use the local tribals. Another is the characters in the game that have personality although some of them seem one dimensional. The character you play Steve Hawkins seems a bit too eager to be in the war though. The weapons are all deadly and useful in Vietcong, so you can always have a favorite weapon. The M16 was "realistic" with 18 only bullet was due to jamming the gun if it was fully loaded with 20, in Steve Hawkins diary at the base before each mission, he mentioned that. The Sequel to Vietcong was really disappointing and doesn't really have a proper storyline, although Steve Hawkins appear in a cameo at the beginning of the game.

    “Vietcong” for me; the closest you’ll get to the feel of the ground war in Vietnam. I got most of the expansion packs and even the sequel.

    I will say this about Viet cong, I don't remember them swearing in fact I remember being quite butt hurt at the time that it was teen rated, that was one of the probably things that was clouding my ability to see the things it was doing well despite noticing them but, back then I kind of had a policy about being able to write my name in corpses.. something that I wouldn't see for years once the console generation became the target development model.. Like.. did they change it later? Cuz.. that kind of makes me feel a little upset.. like that was one of the reasons I never really went out on my way to get it after going through the demo was like well you know it's it's still a teen rated shooter it's it's still not like the old ghost recon but but it's definitely doing doing a lot of things right but it's it's still a kid game with a really good soundtrack and oh shiny over there... I kind of want to look this up now cuz yeah.. I remember I think it was Shell shocked or something no it was men of valor that was like the ultimate Oliver Stone simulator where you did all the cliches and the cinematic experience but it was sold as like this hardcore thing cuz it had a small amount of blood.. and that was like it's selling point was it was like a mature shooter you know and it was basically, like even back then the reviewers were like this is dumb.. so yeah now I'm now I'm kind of butt hurt.. funny how the internet works back then like.. if knowledge was given to you it was so, especially by the developer or publications nobody really followed up on anything and and that was probably for the best now that I think about it because nowadays at the very least any sort of follow-up is really just regretation of the same thing that was released that may or may not be accurate because it was spammed out as fast as possible so you win some and you lose some 20 years later.. but one thing you do win is when you find out there was an alternative version of the game LOL and you get access to the beta and the developer diaries of how they cried themselves to sleep every night while trying to bandage their wounds from the guy at the office who is a zany guy and has personality and you just don't get it and you know it was it was part of the fun atmosphere that he would wet a towel every day and snap every single person like an OCD fit trying to turn the light switch on and off Good times back then, we found out later several years when one of the developers got pissed and dumped the beta leak... Fascinating...

    anytime i try to up the audio quality and hit apply Vietcong crashes. any idea why and is this setting important? is it detrimental to not have it maxed?

  • @NickH

    @NickH

    Жыл бұрын

    By default it should be set to one notch beneath max quality, correct? To be honest I didn't even notice this in my playthrough and probably left it on that second highest setting. That particular slider controls the number of sound buffers, both max and second highest offer 30. I'm assuming this means the amount of sound effects playing at the same time, but I'm not certain, that's not a term I've heard of before. There might be some audio compression between the two settings but for what it's worth I couldn't tell though I'm not the biggest audiophile, running on normal stereo speakers. As long as you can at least get the second highest you should be okay. I could not recreate the max quality crash so I tried to see if anyone else had that problem, and the only things I can see are to disable sounds on the launcher and re-enable on another launch (plus a computer restart) or enable/disable stereo mix in your system sound settings. Sorry I can't be of more help. EDIT: I have to issue a correction, I asked my more tech-literate friend about it and he said sound buffers has to deal with the number of sounds pre-loaded into memory, and the slider allows you to have more or less based on the amount of RAM you have. He theorized that since it's an older game it won't pick up higher RAM amounts than a gig, so trying to put it up higher is causing the game to crash. If using VCStarter and this is still happening I would try the disable sounds / stereo mix fixes or just leave it at the highest setting that it won't crash on.
