Review of the Apple Airport Extreme 5th Generation - Will it work in 2021?

In this video I review Apple's 5th generation of their airport extreme released in 2011. Does it pass the test of time? Is it worth looking for a used one?
To sum it up: if you have an old one go ahead and use it, if you are spending time and money looking for a used one, I would reccomend to simply buy a newer router/firewall. This device should work fine as of 2021, but will become outdated in the soon future.

I grew up PC custom builds but, I always had Mac around & I cannot deny that they just work & last. I had this on a shelf & only upgraded cauee of 6/6E & Apple didn’t have 1 yet. & 2.5gb LAN. Cool review

I still use my 2 TB Time Capsule gen. 4 for back up of my kid's and missus' computers. Also as a router. I realise it's about time to upgrade, since I don't know for how long I will be getting security updates. Humbly, Ylan

I have 3 of these , bought over 2021 , a bargain at £10 each ( CEX shop U.K ) . I now have full WIFI coverage on all of my house , garden and garage , i love these things , even if they are only used as WIFI extenders.

I just got a a1521 and a a1392 for free, can I use these as wifi repeaters/ extenders?

Yes, and if you can manage to connect them to each other via Ethernet, they’ll act as repeaters seamlessly. I have 3 all connected to each other and it works amazingly well. Much better than Wireless extending

Thanks for the video , I was wondering am I just the only person on 2021 using this additional wifi router for my DLInk router , I don't know why the Airport still beams 5GHZ as well as 24GHz better then the DLink ,

Sigue siendo muy funcional, para mi su punto fuerte es la utilidad de airport y el l mapeo que hacer de los dispositivos, más el nateo y el bloqueo por mac, es super útil... buen video

Fifth generation extremely heated and obsoleted. Sixth generation still in-uses well. No issue ever. The RANGE very short distance for wifi. Apple no-longer manufacture Airport Extreme. Yesterday got NetGear AX43000, Model: RAX43, disappointed, cheap made antennas won’t still stand ups, super waisted plastic housing, more important not fast, video quality not good, swapping back to Airport Extreme 6th generation working ok.

I have the rax48 ax5200 and am very satisfied with it. There are a lot of devices in my place and it handles everything with relative ease. Not perfect but what is? I do agree that the antennas are cheap looking and i wish there was more than four but they work so i guess it's good enough

I just bought Airport recently and would to know if it is possible to upload files from my Mac via cable instead of Wlan. Is that possible?

  • @lukescomputers

Assuming you mean by using this as a file server, there isn't any internal storage to upload to. However, you may use a usb flash drive or hard drive to store files. In that case you should be able to copy the files onto the usb drive using your Mac then plug the drive into the Airport. The only other way would be via network (wifi or ethernet). If your mac has an ethernet port or if you have a dongle for it you could connect that way, but other than that there aren't any "USB-like" ways to connect your computer to the airport.

☠BLACK BARON☠ Since the WLAN Airport device is connected to my Fritzbox WAN port. Sometimes I wonder if the Fritzbox can "regulate" the bandwidth throughput on my Airport network.
