Review of the 3 fountain pens Muji sells for $6, $8, and $18. Hard to get but worth the hype?

Review of Platinum Preppy for Kokuyo - my previous favorite Preppy: • Platinum Preppy for Ko...
Muji makes 3 different fountain pens including the Polycarbonate version that's all the hype these days. I had a friend of mine pick all 3 up for me. Let's take a look and see if they're worth the hype.

Excellent presentation. I have been curious about Muji pens. That it is basically a Platinum Preppy in a new skin is interesting. Thank you.

I wonder if this aluminum pen replaces the older version, which was pretty popular amongst us thin metal cylinder enthusiasts.

I have that one. It has a knurled grip and a fine nib. It’s awesome. If these are the new versions they are downgrading. 🤔

haha - I hope they still make that as well although I haven't seen it around in stores in some time. I bought one a few years ago from a Muji store in Hong Kong. My nib never wrote well but the pen was pretty cool!

I liked the "thin" metal one, and in fact stocked up and have three or four of them, at least two of which have never been inked yet. The Muji ink that came with them (two standard short international cartridges) was crap, though. A long time ago, they had a "pocket" version of the Muji Round Aluminum pen, styled much like the Moonman/Majohn N1, which was great! I have one! They also had a mechanical pencil version with a 0.5 mm lead! I have one of those, too!

Muji #2 is a variant of Kaco Sky, Muji #3 is a variant of Kaco Brio. Both use Schmidt nib/feeder module (it's good if you like nibs with feedback, line width is European) that is compatible with standard international cartridge/converter system.

Amazon is asking nearly $18 for that first one (the white one) you showed, being delivered from overseas. I've got a Muji store near me. In fact, I had two of the original Aluminum Muji ones during my first bout of Fountain Pen Madness (FPM), but I recently passed them and spme other pens on to a FP newbie. I'm not into fine/extra fine. So I was never keen on the results of working with them. The nibs were good but would dry up quickly, and I didn't have the patience to work with them. The look, though. I'm surprised that they revised that original design.

If the person below is correct and they are made by Kaco, I'd wait a bit. Kaco really doesn't have the best rep. They made a Lamy 2000 knockoff and almost all ofvthe caps cracked. I've seen the Muiju pens but I have never really liked F or XF nibs. I prefer M and a 1.1 mm stub, well I will absolutely love it. What I did see on Ali Express yesterday was a special edition of Preppy. They're beautiful, words never spoken about a Preppy ever. I think that they would be an awesome gift for a teen or pre-teen girl along with a nice journal. EDIT - the Preppies also include a converter. That's never happened before either.

I must have missed the hype - didn't know these existed. I'll be looking out next time I'm in a Muji store!

Are y'all sure that there's a Muji Fountain Pen with a Bock nib? Because my Muji Aluminium round and slim pen, with a knurled section has a Schmidt F nib. It says Schmidt on the nib itself. And I recently discovered in some Fountain Pen Forum that the exact nib unit model is an Schmidt FH231.

I don’t know why my comments keep being deleted by KZread. The $8 and $18 pens are both reskinned Kaco pens. One is Kaco sky and the other is Kaco brio.

or did kaco copy muji? Not really sure which came first, although muji has been around for half a decade now i think.

@@cruishank8031Muiji doesn't make anything; they buy things other companies make and resell them. Kaco didn't copy Muji; Kaco manufactures Miji's pens for them. Also, Muji has been around for decades.

There's also another MUJI aluminium fountain pen which comes with a Bock nib. Hope this isn't a replacement for the older model because it would be a significant downgrade imho.

the preppy + the graphgear 500 has the exterior design change not even a change its like a reskin to give it a minimal look. There might be more pens and pencils ,pretty sure it comes from the same place, nonetheless very interesting information for me to find out.

I’ve tried the preppy lookalike and the aluminium one. Really like the Alu one, but I’ve never written well with preppy to begin with 😅

Hope this doesn't replace the lovely metal cylinder Muji Fountain Pen with a Bock nib (unsure of that last part, don't take my word for it), that seemed super neat

Love the pens. Now I know China has really got a hold on global manufacturing when Japanese 🇯🇵 pen companies are outsourcing the manufacturing to China 🇨🇳 😂😂
